So I am European but living in the US. And as gaffers know tipping culture is quite different in the US compared to most other places.

But what I have found is that I quite like to give tips. It makes me feel like a big man when I give a generous tip. Tipping flows quite naturally and elegantly here while in Europe it is kinda awkward because it is not so much part of the culture - at least not in Northern Europe.

Disclaimer: I am at a conference in Washington DC, quite drunk already and the bartender is batting her eyelashes at me.

You know you can just call for an escort. specially in dc.

They say tipping doesn't matter or doesn't effect service but when I was a server I know it motivated me and I vary anywhere from 10%-30% based on the quality of my service when I'm out

I don't like or hate tipping, but I basically tip anyone making minimum wage as I was once in their shoes, so I understand neither the job nor the pay is great. I'll even tip places that it's not customary to, like at a fast food place, or if someone bags my groceries.

The chances of him getting laid because he tipped the bartender decently is practically 0. That being said, if he can pull it off that's a much better story than having sex with a hooker in your hotel room.

I like tipping as a way to support places that I like and that I frequent. I wish people were paid a bit better on top of those tips, though. I certainly wouldn't tip any less if they made a more normal wage.

I hate tipping, but I do enjoy tipping someone who actually puts for the extra mile. Normal service, I rarely give more than 15%. If the place is crowded and the waiter is being overworked, ill throw in a bit more, but if special attention to detail is given to me, meaning, constant refills, good pacing between asking if I need anything, etc. That will get a great tip from me.

Otherwise....

Yeah, I can see the appeal in it.
It makes you feel important, as you seen them practically grovelling before your feet just to please you. I hold their day's worth in my hands as I ponder the amount to give them, and seeing them sweat before me as I pretend to evaluate their services brings me great joy. I don't care about rewarding them, I care only about the power I hold over them as part of the tipping transaction.

I'm a golden God that decide the fate of these men and women, and I relish every moment of it.

i hate the obligation to tip, i wouldn't mind if tipping were an optional thing and people weren't horrified at you if you didn't tip but that's not the way things work.

I can't stand tipping, but I'm usually quite generous when I do. I'm not that picky. If I don't leave you a tip, you really fucked up.

I got a huge Maine lobster last week. As a tip I left a claw. On the bill under tip I wrote, claw.

The people who don't tip and know what these people actually get paid are some of the cheapest scum on the planet who hide behind the shield of, "If no one tipped they would have to raise their pay!"

It's not the employers exploiting their employees, no it's the customers refusing to turn their dinner into a charity xD

Bahahahaha! There we go. Keep justifying fucking over people who are working in that reality with your stand.

You can push for change in how these people get paid without punishing the people working in that reality in the process. In the mean time I'll maintain that you're a cheap piece of shit hiding behind the barrier of what these people are going through as an excuse.

that's good. I suppose it would make you kinda unpopular though, wouldn't it

I don't imagine there are many people who repeatedly go to the same restaurant and skip out on the tip every time but in that scenario yeah you probably would be pretty unpopular with the staff. Every time I declined to tip it was because something was especially fucked up with the meal/service so I wouldn't be going back anyways.

Yeah, it isn't as though people have ever been chased by waiters or berated for not tipping.

I've been chased out for leaving a bad tip. The only reason I left a tip at the restaurant was because the shithead kids that I went there to meet didn't leave One. I didn't get shot, but I left a few bucks and the dude runs me down to throw money at me? Sorry that some of the neighborhood kids were such rats, but I tried to do the right thing.

The amount of sexual innuendos present immediately after the OP doesn't surprise me int he lest. Gotta love the corruption of the internet.

As for tipping, I like to tip depending on the service received. If I get really good service, they get a good tip, if I get bad service, well, sucks for them.
