Favorite train stages? - The thrill of being on a moving train.

I think there's something inherently old-school and fun about train stages in video games. They give you a certain thrill and to me they're classic. So what's your favorite train stages in video games, can be from 2D or modern 3D games, give a couple examples.

If you want to do the extra credit, what is your favorite elevator stage? :)

Paper Mario: TTYD

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Both immensely charming levels that make you want to tuck into a mug of hot cocoa, paperize, and get ready for adventure.

Uncharted 2 easily. I'm still amazing how well they handled the backgrounds, because during a normal playthrough you won't see them looped, but they're also often synched to how far along you are in the level, an example being that when you're at this part of the train, you're always going over the lake.

Fuck the common opinion, the train driving part in Zelda: Spirit Tracks was really fun
(just like the game overall, because god damn these two-player dungeons)
. The one and only downside of it is a pretty heavy slowdown with many enemies incoming.

Yeah Uncharted 2 really brought back that classic fun feeling back with their epic train stage while modernizing it. It definitely put a huge smile on my face the first time I played it.

  • BLOOD (E1M3 - Phantom Express), was pretty amazing on the Build engine
  • NOLF - Rescue Attempt, for its James Bond feeling
  • Wolfenstein TNO - The "Breitspurbahn" level was pretty cool (was a passive little vignette though). hope they go back to that thing for a proper action level in the next full Wolfenstein game if it happens to be in 1960s Germania again.

From that one N64 star wars game

Shadows of the Empire really stood out. I think it continues to be the most memorable train level for me. Jumping between all the trains in motion, turning, switching tracks, etc. while also being affected by each train's physics is very fun. I don't know of any other game with a level like that.

The CODE or QUOTE tags don't work that way. They simply render the images at a smaller size, but it's still the same large image file.

Warlords of Draenor has a boss fight that takes place on a trainyard with trains coming in and out that will one shot you. Pretty fun little mechanic.

It also has a dungeon that takes place on a train that is pretty fun.

I don't have the image for it, but Terry's Fatal Fury 2/Special stage.
I see someone linked Terry's Garou stage, kudos on that.

...and unless it hasn't been posted yet
