The father of VR gaming returns in next-gen reboot

Long-awaited return debuts at E3 conference
Designed for the next generation of virtual reality devices
Playable at E3 running on Sony's Project Morpheus
Explosive tank combat gameplay revealed in trailer

June 16, 2015 - Independent UK developer Rebellion reveals its stunning reboot of Battlezone at the E3 show floor. Designed for the next generation of virtual reality devices, Battlezone (working title) delivers intense first-person tank warfare across gorgeous neon landscapes, combining the instant adrenaline of the arcade with a deeper tactical challenge. Powered by Rebellion's next-gen Asura engine, Battlezone is confirmed for Sony's Project Morpheus on PlayStation 4 and for PC. Other platforms are to be confirmed.

Battlezone is a bold homage to Atari's classic 1980 arcade game, widely regarded as the forefather of virtual reality gaming with its distinctive periscope display. 35 years on, Rebellion directors Jason and Chris Kingsley are thrilled to reignite the beloved series for a new generation of players:

"When the original Battlezone came out in 1980 - long before we were developing games - Chris and I were among the many who made up its loyal arcade following," said Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley. "When we acquired the Battlezone rights two years ago we almost had to pinch ourselves! It really was a dream come true, so it's our aim to deliver the same revolutionary thrill of the original for a whole new generation. We want to use VR to truly capture the imagination of today's gamers, just as the original Battlezone captured ours."

I always thought Sega's Sub-Roc was more that ("the forefather of virtual reality gaming"). It was pretty much the first 3-D (as in effect, not graphics) arcade game.

Nooo!

Battlezone 98 is what they should be remaking not the arcade version. BZ98 is still the best FPS/RTS hybrid ever made oozing with Cold War sci/fi atmoshpere but they had to do this instead. I'm extra salty with a side of bitterness.

Add me to the '98 people, I loved me some Battlezone 2 and I got really excited at the title...

Atleast I got nostalgic memories from seeing the name again ;_; (the game over screen messed me up as kid)

This is one of those announcements that I didn't see coming, but are so obvious in retrospect. I can seem them releasing a 98 follow up if this first one is successful. Super excited for in any case

This is great news. But I can't help to feel dissapointed they went for the original arcade game route instead of the shooter/RTS hybrid that Battlezone 1-2 were on PC. This is one of the few classic PC subgenres that didn't get ressurected yet.

The chose the wrong damn Battlezone.

Battlezone 98' was one of the greatest games ever made, just a perfect hybrid of FPS/RTS.
It's a shame that genre of gaming never gained traction.

I think Battlezone II is still having decent community sustained by mods and with some effort you can easily find people to play even today.

Oh man, thought it was a reboot of the 1998 version. Anyway, this looks cool too.

Well shoot. I saw the title and got excited thinking it was a version of the RTS style remake from the late 90's but as I clicked it I realized it wasn't going to be that. Still looks neat, hopefully I can use VR for stuff like this with my messed up vision.
