Surprised that he didn't " died with a head shot while trying to escape" like Pablo Escobar, which in a sense is more worrying.

Indeed, but the rate at which these kingpins have been captured has increased signficantly. It's becoming increasingly harder for someone to come up with an organized empire like el Chapo or the Beltrán Leyva brothers did.

From what I read a lot of the cartels aren't rallying, at least openly, around figurehead anymore for the very reasons you mentioned. There are of course leaders to these groups but they don't seem to parade themselves around as much or are at least smarter about doing it.

That said there are still a ton of cartel monsters on sites like FB and twitter who openly post some disgusting crap. And of course their car collections, etc.

Which are replaced by smaller but ruthless groups that start to fight each other, akin Guerreros Unidos vs Los Rojos and the whole mess down at Morelos.

However, if the mega-carters disappear their capability to bully Federal and State government would be conceivable diminished. I suspect this is part of the reason why they are now targeting local authorities, like the recent execution of Gisela Mota Ocampo.

Spot on. They'll certainly move into that direction and thus the importance to either empower municipal security forces or accept the state unified police command initiative.

been saying these people need to be tried by the military as enemies of the nation for years, if they were serious about it being a war they would do this but the government keeps processing them through civilian channels.
