Star Citizen Overtakes GTA 5 as Third Most Expensive Game to Develop

Roberts Space Industries’ upcoming ambitious space sim Space Citizen has now overtaken Grand Theft Auto V as the third most expensive game ever developed.

The game’s stretch goals page confirmed earlier that the title has now amassed over $138 million in crowdfunding, placing it above Rockstar’s GTA 5 and only $2 million behind Destiny, the second most expensive game in terms of development costs.

The PC-exclusive Star Citizen has been in development since 2011, with no current ETA on a full release. The title plans to combine multiple game genres; it will include aspects of space trading and combat simulation, exploration and first-person shooter mechanics, all the while being set in a massively multiplayer persistent universe.

Wasn't Destiny like 500 million for the whole franchise or something? Though I imagine if it's only $2 million away it could surpass it by its launch when mixed with the marketing budget.

Glad to know that minecraft cost several dozens of millions of € before coming out, and that dayz is likely on or has passed the 100+ millions in development costs.
Learning something new every day.

They're throwing inflation into the mix, which makes no sense for global products, unless you have detailed breakdowns of the marketing and development budgets by country.

Modern Warfare 2 was a $50M game with a $200M marketing campaign. GTA5 development + Marketing was more.

I thought that was already debunked. The 500M price tag was over the course of the project and post release plus marketing?

Doesn't matter, we are now taking the amount of what a game "made" before release as its budget, so 500M is now the development budget for destiny, this is how development budgets work, at least according to the article.
Can only imagine the development budget of WoW expansions, what with all those insane numbers of pre-orders.

WoW's to-date development, marketing and running costs are well over $1B.

I really don't get how the conclusion is drawn.

Just because they have that much money available for funding does not mean they have used all of it or even half of it yet. You would need actual word from them on how much has been used; I'd be really surprised if they have used the full $138 million... I'd reckon they will finish the product with money to blow on other expenses.

How on earth is Deadpool the 11th most expensive game of all time? Did they just divert a load of money elsewhere and do some dodgy accounting?

Misleading title, as it isn't at all.

It's raised the amount of money it has, they haven't spent that.

It's also two games not one.

So bullshit article.

It is some site that nobody has ever heard of. What do you expect? Journalistic training? Integrity? Accuracy?

Nah. The headline is all that counts. They will eventually spend it but this also reflects the general poor understanding of a crowdfunded model.

Yes it's gotten all that money but they have yet to use all of it. They're a long ways off until all that money is used up so can't really judge the game based on just the amount of money it's gotten.

Seek victory, not fairness
From the article:
"Note: It has been a subject of debate as to whether or not the $138 million represents the true value of costs related to the game’s development. According to Chris Roberts in a 2014 interview, all money raised through crowdfunding is directly invested in developing the game, with targets being updated accordingly. This is reinforced in a November 2015 video (4:45)."

Therefore this is how much it's actually cost so far...? Heh

If it was that easy people wouldn't be out there trying to make estimates based on dev numbers and average salaries.

I'd like to hear your reasoning for such certainty.

They don't care so much, that they work long hours, work crunch periods. Nah, they're just spinning their wheels draining that money before they move on.

Probably because GTA5 was a focused product with an actual definition, while Star Citizen is a bunch of wishes and dreams.
