Firmware Version 2.00 - Official Press Release

Following is the official press release from Sony on Firmware Update 2.00 (available for download 8 November). On top of the ability to turn the PlayStation 3 on remotely via the PSP, Version 2.00 also allows the creation of playlists in both the music and photo sections, giving users an opportunity to create unlimited music playlists, as well as sharing favourite photos in high definition.

Version 2.00 also allows for customisation of the XMB menu screen, with the ability to change the colour and brightness or to set a completely different custom theme. Moreover, there’s the addition of an Information Board on XMB to keep users up to date on the latest PlayStation news, the inclusion of a new PlayStation Network category and logo for easier navigation and Trend Micro Web Security, a free2, state of the art internet security system.

Official press release follows.

Latest PLAYSTATION®3 System Software Update Allows PSPTM to Turn PS3TM On and Off from Internet Connection for Enhanced Remote Play

Ability to customise XMB™ and add personalised playlists for both music and photos also enabled

London, 8 November 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) announced today the availability of the latest version of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) system software. Version 2.00 features the ability to turn a PS3 system on and off remotely, using a PSP™ (PlayStation®Portable) system via the Remote Play1 function, allowing for a truly mobile partnership between the two systems.

Building on the success and potential of the Remote Play functionality, Version 2.00 will cement the partnership between PS3 and PSP and create a truly global experience. With the ability to turn your PS3 on and off from Wi-fi connection, there is now the opportunity to listen to the music, look at the photos and watch the videos saved on the PS3 Hard Disk Drive, anywhere in the world.

To further enhance the PS3 offering, Version 2.00 allows for the creation of personalised playlists in both the music and photo sections. This simple to use function gives users an opportunity to create unlimited music playlists for all occasions, as well as sharing favourite photos in glorious high definition.

Continuing with the idea of a personalised PS3, Version 2.00 allows for customisation of the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar) menu screen. Change the colour and brightness with the greatest of ease or have something completely different by setting a custom theme. With the potential for new backgrounds to become available on PLAYSTATION®Network in the future, Version 2.00 truly opens up a whole raft of options.

A host of other enhancements includes the addition of an Information Board on XMB to keep people up to date on the latest PlayStation® news, the inclusion of a new PLAYSTATION Network category and logo for easier navigation and Trend Micro Web Security, a free2, state of the art internet security system, designed to give parents peace of mind.

So no ingame XMB? I don't give a fuck about customizing it.

No.

But you can now keep your baby brother/sister from watching porn on the PS3.

That's the strangest sequence of words ever used.

Yeah I don't know what is going on. Sony is going to force us to go through HOME all the time?

Give us in game access to our friends Sony.

Boooo-urns. Get back to work Sony!

*Xross game invites
*DTS-HD decoding
*Blu-ray Profile 1.1 (2.0)
*In game sountrack

In that order STAT.

It's nice, but Sony really needs to get the thumb out on in-game buddy list access (whatever about in-game access to the full XMB!). It's disappointing we won't have that at the end of 2007.

They've already said that all the Home features will also be able to be found on the XMB. They aren't going to force you to use it if you don't want to.

I'm really curious about that new PlayStation Network category (I wonder if this means the PS Store will be different??) and how that will be like. Turning on my PS3 remotely will be nice too. :D

I'm still peeved because many believed in-game XMB was coming all because of that old rumor and many internet websites continuing to believe it was coming in 2.0 (when all Eric Lempel said was it's coming, but not the next firmware upgrade over and over again). Sony made no confirmation about it or any hint it would be in 2.0; therefore, I did not keep hopes up.

I don't really give a fuck about having the FULL XMB in game, just do it like the 360 Sony, do a mini bar with a bunch of options, you've ripped them before this shouldn't be a problem.

Cue the "WTF SONY.. NO IN-GAME XMB" shitstorm...

Anyone remeber how awesome 1.8 was! Upscale PS2 games, DVDs... now that was awesome...

I've given up on being excited about fw updates, I'll play with the features etc., and I'm sure we'll get in-game XMB someday.. FW 3.0... Believe...

So, a power button creates a truly mobile partnership? What kind of a ridiculous statement is that?

Probably more likely that the HOME code is also the revised friends backend and until it's done we won't get the frontend on the XMB either.

I don't have a PSP, so underwhelmaton total. Don't get me wrong, I like the customization stuff (getting sick of using backgrounds or having a black screen all night) and the playlists are a great addition for me, but like most ppl I was hoping for more on the in-game messaging side. Maybe that part will become clear when we can all get into Home.

I bet most of the changes are to the stuff we can't see, dealing with Home and the Store updates. At least they leaked it far enough in advance that the downer already hit. ;P

So can someone explain to me how you send invites to friends on the PS3?
I have to wait until after the holidays to pick up a PS3 but I just might wait until they implement in game XMB. As a 90% MP gamer these things are important.
Is it that much of a bitch to get a bunch of friends in a game?

Remote play wasn't feasible for most people before because it required leaving your PS3 on all the time. Now, it doesn't, so it suddenly becomes feasible. It is a very important piece of the puzzle.

I think I would have been more excited if this was 1.95. I expected 2.0 to coincide with a total overhaul of the PSN/XMB interface to allow for all those features we want/demand... whatever, custom XMB is hot shit and my Games category looked like crap due to Puzzle Fighter, so the new PSN category should be cool...

Huh? Sharing like via PSN messages? I thought you could already do this.

Anyone feel like mocking up a couple of concepts for an in-game XMB so Sony could get off their clueless asses and get to work on what it should look like and what features it should have?

Bad_Boy

time to take my meds
themes = nice
remote start = nice
music + picture playlists = very nice
playstation news = ok i guess
in-game sountracks = where?
in-game messenger = where?
clock/time/date when pressing ps button = where?

good, but not spectacular imo. hopefully there is a bunch of stuff unknown that we will only find out when the firmware is released. aka sony sneak updates.

I think they mean, share with the people who are watching you use your ps3.

Well, nothing here I care about.

Sony, PLEASE, I'm begging you, let me create folders for my games, movies, and music. My lists are so large and unwieldy now.

But you've never done this on the PSP, so I don't see why you'd do it on the PS3. I hate you guys.

(I take it back if it's somehow in this update)

You can thank MS for that one!

Except you can use your own images as backgrounds in a very easy way and you only have one background to change (not all the different blades: MS sells you themes which have a different picture in each blade's background while allowing you to use a custom picture but making it the background of all blades) easily and if theme-ing works the same way as it does on PSP you will be able to create your own themes or download other user-created ones ;).
