VALVE ACQUIRES TURTLE ROCK STUDIOS

Leading Content and Technology Company Adds California Studio

January 10, 2008 - Fresh off the success of The Orange Box, the 2007 game of the year award-winning collection of new games heralded as "the best value in gaming history," Valve Corporation announces the acquisition of Turtle Rock Studios, the Orange County-based development house behind one of 2008's most anticipated games, Left 4 Dead.
Valve was founded in 1996 and has grown to become one of the game industry's leading technology and content creators, with a portfolio of over 20 million games sold worldwide. The merger of the two companies extends Valve's development team and provides the company with a new studio in southern California.
Turtle Rock Studios' Left 4 Dead joins a growing list of Valve's game properties which includes the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress and Day of Defeat series of games as well as Portal, introduced as part of The Orange Box.
"We have been seeing very strong growth with Steam and Source, our content distribution and development platforms, up over 150% over the last 12 months. Given our expectations for Left 4 Dead and our long-standing relationships with members of the Turtle Rock team, this was an easy decision. It also gives us a base from which to expand our development activities in the Los Angeles area," said Gabe Newell, president of Valve.
"Left 4 Dead fills a long-standing demand gamers have had for a coop first-person action experience, and it will also help Valve's expansion into the console market," added Doug Lombardi, Valve's VP of marketing.
"Valve has had great success bringing in projects and teams such as Team Fortress and Portal. As I spent time working and talking with the creators of those products over the past several years, it became clear that this was the right next step for myself, my colleagues at Turtle Rock, our customers, and our products," said Michael Booth, founder and CEO of Turtle Rock Studios. "We are excited to be a part of such a visionary and forward-thinking company."
Founded in 2002 by Michael Booth, Turtle Rock Studios is the creator of Left 4 Dead, named one 2008's most wanted titles by many of today's leading game-enthusiast publications and Web sites.

Left 4 Dead looks fantastic. I doubt I'll get to play it until it's old news unless Valve changes their stance on the PS3, though. :(

Valve is getting hooked on that easy console money. :(

I really hope Valve doesn't grow any bigger. What has made them so good has been their ability to retain a small core of talented people that move from project to project.

But, I guess when they are forced to let EA ruin your properties on other platforms .. maybe it's time to grow a bit.

This can only be a good thing for Left 4 Dead

that they would specifically use this acquisition to give lip service to supporting consoles is pretty interesting to me. hey, maybe i'm wrong

Oh jeez, the console talk. Look, we all know Valve has just gotten their first taste of real console money. We all know they're gonna pull a Bethesda/Epic/Bioware and jump ship. We all know this. But they haven't yet. And Left 4 Dead may be the last Valve hurrah for the PC faithful. So just let us have it, ok? Please?

ummmm valve isn't taking shit from EA. They're simply partners in bringing their games to the retail space, nothing more. If EA does anything to piss valve off they'll just leave. Just like what they did with vivendi.

I do not avoid women, GAF, but I do deny them my essence.
I already thought Left 4 Dead had been taking too much time in development. Now with Valve at the helm... bah.

What s so good about Left For Dead multiplayer?
Well for one thing, it's entirely designed designed around its 4 player co-op mode. The single-player mode just replaces your 3 teammates with bots.

It's CO-OP Multiplayer against Zombies.
So you with your friends can work through single-player-like chapters blasting zombies. Some zombies have special abilities (puking, etc) and can be controlled by AI or by other real people. It blurs the lines between MP and SP, hence it's very much focused on team work to fight against streams of zombies coming at you.

Shawn from GFW Radio played it a couple of months ago and was very positive on it.

I think he's talking about having EA port OB to PS3 and it being a fairly meh port.

I also thought Turtle Rock was more-or-less owned by Valve already.

Yeah, that's what I mean... I really doubt one will ever come, too. I should upgrade my PC someday. XD

Somebody better buy valve now before they regret not doing it.
They are private, they won't be bought.

What's so funny?

Maybe he should have said FPS Multiplayer Concept of the Year since it's so early but I can't blame people for being excited. Awesome idea.
It's not 'concept', we've seen plenty of footage (1upshow even had a segment on it) and people have played it and have been very impressed.

Talking of which, what's with the radio silence on The Crossing? That was announced before Left for Dead but we haven't seen anything at all.

I know it has nothing to do with either of those companies, I'm just thinking aloud.

Same, never realised untill now anyway.

Much as I am looking foward to this game I can see some amazing mods and varys appearing for the pc version that will, like counter strike, give the game more legs then you expect for the price.

While not exactly much like left 4 dead, if you own counter strike play zmod.

I reckon Valve will continute PC support, I mean they kinda own the platform along with Blizzard. Steam = winnah. Not just for ease of use, but monies.

I'm right there with you. Although it seems a lot more ambitious than even Left 4 Dead and I can see it taking a long time for everything to be pulled off (If ever.) Especially if it's being required to have Valve level polish.

EDIT: Wait. What? I thought The Crossing was being contracted by Valve. I know they weren't developing it, but are they completely uninvolved in this game?
