First let me start by saying I am a big fan of IMDB's top 250. While no list is perfect, I do find my own personal opinions to be much closer to IMDB's ratings than any other list I've come across. I understand there are some who vehemently dismisses it as flawed at best and trash at worst, and for a long time I defended IMDB's voting system despite its flaws, but recently even I have to admit there is a strong bias towards newly released movies and internet cult favorites. And so I inevitably wonder: can GAF do better?
So, while I'm bored at work, let's try a little experiment. Let's have everyone list their favorite movies and I shall attempt to compile them into a list of GAF's top movies (similar to GOTY voting). Then, let's see if GAF can agree on whether it's a good list or not.
Here are the rules: vote for your 10 favorite movies (which will receive 2 points each) and up to20 10 "highly recommended" movies (which will receive 1 point each). Movies from this year do not qualify due to new movie hype syndrome (or else Inception would already be #1
). I'll start:
10 favorites:
2001: A Space Odessey
Memento
Groundhog Day
Hotel Rwanda
The Dark Knight
The Matrix
Dead Poet's Society
The Thing
Raiders of the Lost Ark
City of God
Highly Recommended:
A Beautiful Mind
Batman Begins
Casino Royale
Fight Club
Life is Beautiful
Schindler's List
Sin City
LOTR: Fellowship
LOTR: Two Towers
LOTR: Return of the King
The Prestige
The Usual Suspects
I'm sure I'm missing a ton since I still haven't seen most "classics" but I'm sure the rest of GAF can fill me in.
And yes I know there's ambiguity with "greatest" versus "favorite". This voting system is inherently flawed due to most Gaffers being more exposed to recent movies than older ones. Eventually sometime down the road I hope to come up with a better system but this is good for now. I think it's interesting to see as long as we don't take it too seriously.
