I don't know, they switch between nice Max and roid-guy. I can't imagine the game playing anything like the previous games.

So does this game take place in two different time periods? Or will there just be a bit at the beginning showing Max's transformation into bald loser Max.

Yeah. Bald Max will appear near the end of the story (it's not in chronological order though, time skips back and forth). Bearded Max with hair is when he initially appears in Brazil, several years earlier. Sans Beard is NYC Max.

I'm kind of stunned by people who think that a cover system is a good idea for this game. I only hope that they haven't actually played the earlier games.

The time I see myself being behind cover is going to be minimal...extremely minimal. Old habits died hard.

Yeah, they're playing with time, it's Max at different stages of his life over a period of maybe 8-12 years.

It's an option. Bullet time, shoot-dodge, and cover. Use it as you wish, it's not a requirement.

maybe he grabbed them off some dude and didn't have time to take off the suppressor due to the fact people are around him ready to blow his fucking brains out

I can say that at least there's one screen in that bunch that gives a glimmer of hope. I am not liking the idea of multiple time periods, however. Interested in how this will turn out...

You can't just say 'don't use it', the gameplay will likely be balanced around the use of cover. It's like telling people not to use fast travel in Oblivion.

I'm hoping, but when you see him in his coat and then see the muscle shirt shot, it really looks like they spent the down time jamming in new parts with old max.

Well, I'm not saying "don't use it", I'm saying it's an option (wasn't that implied in the EDGE article?) I figured that they were building the game around giving you multiple ways to take out enemies, and you don't solely rely on cover or solely rely on bullet time.

But he has bullet time so he could like slow down time and stuff, right? :D It might also imply that there's going to be stealth sections... great. Got a few copies of Edge to catch up on, so I've probably missed a few things if I'm honest.

to be honest though, he looks less of a fat loser in these shots, just a pissed off 50y/o man who shaved his head.

And let Rockstar do their job. People want powerful stories and good writing in their games but start whining if their favourite character hasn't aged well.
Payne looking like that is obviously related to a pretty big twist in the story and probably adds to the character's depth.
