Acttil, the Los Angeles-based company formed by former NIS America employees in May, has teamed up with Anaheim-based game developer Elemental Labs to develop a real-time, weapon-based 3D action RPG for PlayStation 4 and PS3 called Reborn.

In development for the past nine months at Elemental CEO Franz Tissera’s garage, Reborn is built on the Unreal Engine, and aims to “satisfy the action hero in all of us while recapturing the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of the classic RPGs that we enjoyed growing up,” according to Tissera.

Elemental will seek $150,000 in funding for the project via a Kickstarter campaign set to launch next week to release the game digitally in fall 2014.

The game is a sci-fi action RPG with the real-time combat of action games and “the depth” of traditional RPGs. It will include “an experience and leveling system, progressive License Board, rare loot, and various character classes, and downloadable content (upon reaching higher stretch goals).” It is set in Neo-Tokyo 2188 and stars a futuristic version of the famed Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto.

“The people of Japan once embraced a life of spirituality and harmony with nature, but now they’re obsessed with technology, forcing it intoevery aspect of their lives, becoming willing slaves,” reads a press release describing the game. “But some see the destruction of their culture, and rebel against the modern system. As Musashi, you will travel the streets of Neo-Tokyo, clashing with cyber-enhanced gangs and oppressive corporate overlords in your attempt to find ‘a better path.’”

Story

Neo-Tokyo is shrouded in lies and corruption. A massive wall stands between the wealthy and the poor as Rena Nakano, cyborg and president of Nexus Roku Corporation, leads the country into darkness. Manufacturing augmentations for human beings, Nexus Roku promises an easier life. But by embedding chips into their patients and buying out those who would expose them, Nexus Roku is able to alter the behavioral patterns of society to be docile and compliant, giving Rena Nakano unrivaled power and control.

Once used to seal away the Tengu Demon Sōjōbō, Rena Nakano is in search for the ancient pearl in hopes that upon freeing Sōjōbō, he will grant her immortality as a reward. Within this societal turbulence, a handful of unlikely heroes find themselves leading the resistance not only to Rena Nakano’s greed, but perhaps saving the world from Sōjōbō, and ultimately death, altogether.

Based on the real historical swordsman, Musashi Miyamoto leads this group through a plot teeming with deceit, violence, love, betrayal and sacrifice against a backdrop inspired by traditional Japanese lore. Rich with philosophical themes and generous subtext, Reborn tells a tale that asks the question, “What is freedom without free will?”

Game Features

-Real-time weapon-based 3D combat emphasizing well-timed combos, special attacks, and environmental interaction.

-Action-oriented story featuring an engaging, cool cast of characters and visually impressive environments.
-Reborn features four distinct gameplay pillars: Combat, Stealth, Augmentation and Social Perception.

Woah, this could be really neat.

Also, the face and body on that guy...it's like God had some scraps left over.

Wow. Fucking /wow/. Definitely keeping an eye out for this.

Based on Musashi?! IS THIS THE SPIRITUAL SUCCESSOR TO SAMURAI LEGEND?!

I certainly want to see a Kickstarter campaign! Hopefully they succeed. I love Neo-Tokyo as a setting.

Dunno about the character designs (never was a fan of "huge body + tiny head"), but the environmental art is really great. We need more settings like that; it's why I'm so excited for Cyberpunk 2077.

I was wondering if Kickstarters for console games were going to start popping up more and more. I don't know what to do, I haven't really been pleased with the track record of the things I've Kickstarted for the PC so far.

Looks promising. This indie game movement is really going to bring back those mid tier games that don't meet the checklist of "AAA" games. People WILL recognize indie games!

well this sounds amazing. But a bit too good to be true. This really feel like a wish list project and yet nothing is shown. And the price seems amazingly low for such a project

Do these guys have a good portfolio?

A good idea in the wrong hands amounts to nothing. Hopeful for a good game though.

That is no where need the appropriate budget, especially if they are in CA. Typical monthly burn rate is around $13,000 per employee. If they get anything pass their goal that money will dry up really quick.

Very ambitious project for a Kickstarter. I'll take a look, but it's not an instant pledge from me like with Shantae and Mighty #9.

Hope that budget target is wrong 150k is not much.
