April really wasn't as big of a deal as some people made it out to be. IIRC, they were phasing the 1000 model out and not shipping anymore, letting the stock clear out before the Borderlands bundle came out.

It was finally back in stock. For most of March and all of April, it was effectively off the market since Sony is no longer shipping 1000 series units.

It also comes with the new hardware revision(Vita 2000) and the stock was almost non-existent the last couple of months.
The words "can you imagine how great the Vita would sell if Sony put half its PSP-might behind it?" came out of my mouth no less than an hour ago. That means nothing.

People getting into the system right now have a lot of advantages:
