Harada Wants Fan Feedback on a New Character Design for Tekken 7

fqvXk8C.jpg

Harada is looking for some feedback on the character design posted above. He plans to do this with other new characters for the series too. Here's the deal...

Hi everyone, this is Harada from the Tekken Project.

This will probably catch you all in a surprise, but I have a question I’d like to ask all of you “Tekken fans”. Asking a question like this is very rare in the history of Tekken development.

I believe all of you know by now that we are developing Tekken 7 at the moment. Of course, in Tekken 7, there will be “some” new characters that will be featured in the game. The ideas of these new characters are changing daily, and nothing is totally decided yet.

Today, I wanted to ask about “one of the ideas within the several new character ideas”. That is, a design concept of an Arab character. I would particularly like to hear the feedback from our Tekken fan community in the Middle Eastern countries (and of course, the all Tekken fan community).

However, the character lineup for Tekken 7 has not been decided! This character that we have shown you this time has not been decided as the character to be featured in the game yet. It will be decided depending on the reactions and feedback from the Tekken fan community.

Please do comment on this design concept that we have revealed this time.

To be honest, we did have an idea of an Arab fighter since 2008, but since most of the development team members are Japanese and do not know much about the Middle Eastern culture or clothes, we were not able to fully design it back then. But in recent years I (Harada) have been visiting places such as Dubai and Saudi Arabia, and many of the development staff members have been learning about Middle Eastern culture and designs. From there we came up with this character’s outfit design.

If the Tekken fan community, especially those in the Middle Eastern area, end up liking this character, I would like to feature this character in the game. On the other hand, if this character is not received well by the Middle Eastern Tekken fan community members, there is a possibility that the character will be considerably changed or letting go of the idea of featuring this character in the game.

The development team likes this design and think that this character is a cool Arab fighter, but if there is something in particular to mention, please do let us know. We would like it if you all do like the character as well.

(Some precautions again)

Note that featuring this Arab character in the game is not decided yet at this moment and will need the push from the Tekken fan community.
What we want you to look at is mainly the outfit concept, the fighting style, etc. but please do not debate about the gameplay portion at this stage.
This is just a concept sketch. Nothing has been set in stone, so please do not jump the gun and think everything is already fixed and decided.
We will not count as feedback those comments that use bad and inappropriate language or those that harm others. If it becomes a big issue, we will take down the post and seal it in the very firm Mishima Zaibatsu container box forever (and we will block you). We will erase those comments that does not relate to the topic. We look forward for Tekken fans to comment and feedback in a mannerly fashion.
The development team will be reading the comments but will not (be able to) reply except for particular cases. In addition, we will have a cut-off time on the feedbacks after a certain time.
There will be several new other characters in Tekken 7. We will not be revealing them yet. But I will collect feedbacks also about them in the future.

We ask for the Tekken fans’ help. Let’s build the excitement for Tekken 7 together.

I thank you for your help in advance!

You can send your feedback to their Twitter and/or Facebook pages.

Personally, I think it's a really cool idea for a fighter, but his costume is way too similar to an Assassin's Creed type character. An outfit that's a bit more dynamic, and that shows more of his body would be cooler IMO.

As for his fighting style, I'm not sure, but it looks like he's got a lot of weaponry on him. I wonder how that would mesh.

Harada pls. Tekken is Tekken.

Stop throwing in Soul Calibur and other third party influence to your character design.

Give us Devil Asuka or something, keep them simple cause Lars was sorta pushing it.

Cut the weapons, make the cloak an alt, keep it simple.

First thing I thought of when I saw him was that he looks like a character from Soul Calibur. Now people have said it he looks like he is from Assassin's Creed.

I'm interested to see if they do this with more Tekken 7 character hopefuls.

The idea is cool but it does indeed look too much like an assassin

Drop the knife belts, maybe drop the sleeves and it could work

Needs red glowing eyes, anime hair, no shirt, and a huge black scar on his chest that glows orange whenever he's around Kazuya, then you have a Tekken character.

Yeah, we could probably do without the cloak and the weapons, but he looks pretty good to me.

Yeah. Without the holsters I that's a character design that could fit in quite nicely within the Tekken universe. Keep the cloak for his intro.

A Arab character would be cool.

Now both half's of me can be in the tekken

also this design is hype.

I guess he is doing that because Muigel, they got alot of flac for putting dude in a mariachi uniform, so they changed his outfit. Maybe they wanna run by some of the deisgns through fans to make sure they make the " stereotypical garb " mistake again

Thats how we evolve as artists. And thats how art evolves.

And maybe it doesn't work simple, expand your horizons and all that

Maybe there are more complicated designs for a reason, like.. nina's... work/SNM clothes.

Arabic character? Awesome...although I can imagine the devs are asking for fan feedback specifically for this character because of the accidental use of 'Allah' on the floor of one of the stages a while back. They handled that issue really well though, apologized admitted they just found the script online because it looked cool, removed it and moved on.

Harada-san, a ghitra isn't supposed to cover one eye just to look cool. I don't like it, I'd rather see a more functional design. It looks Souls Calibur-ish with all the unnecessary accessories and "stuff" around the character.

I like the actual facial design.

Why is he doing this? If he's going to be an Arab at least gear him differently. He's all AC1-13. All he needs to do now is jump off a building into a stack of hay. I wish they'd bring back the biker look. Tekken's building blocks are becoming reach around moves that take up an entire 20 pages. Pretty soon it'll match DOA if not taken care of properly. I personally don't want that fluid of a game inside Tekken.

Give him some belt pants and turn his shirt into something smooth and add those markings to his shirt. Keep the ghutra.

Pretty nice guy (apart from the blue shadows thing...)
So... He's an Assassin?

Cool design, though it looks more Soulcalibur than Tekken. At least we'll have another Muslim (?) character after Zafina!

Edit: lol that several others have already said both of these things earlier in the thread. I mean, not that it isn't obvious.

Also, the cynical part of me wants to think this is "transparent test marketing" to find out if radical Islamists will fatwa him.

Definitely all for an Arab as a character. That said, he does look a lot like an Assassin, so I think there should be should be some design tweaks.

Keep the shemagh though.

Tekken is huge in the Middle East, so it's nice to see him aiming to please that market.

The kufiyya is nice, and I don't mind the jaunty angle. Maybe reduce his assortment of belt-knives to just one Omani-style khanjar. The whole metal shoulderpad stuff is a bit busy, and I think he could do with a more impressive beard. Other than that I think it's a nice start.

And come on guys, the reason he looks like an assassin is that the assassins were Arabs.

It's the hood/cloak that makes him look all assassiny. I guess Ubisoft ruined hoods on characters. :(

Take it away and he looks less like an Ubisoft Assassin.

A bit too much like an Assassin's creed character (easiest fix would be to make his primary shirt color not white). Add more belts and its golden though.

I do really like it in general, mind you.

I think changing the white to another color would make him look less gaudy and Assassin Creed-ish. Maybe tan?

I like the face; that sort of facial design isn't one I've seen in Tekken (admittedly, I don't have much experience with Tekken).

looks nice, I like it! as for the costume, it's tekken, he's probably gonna end up wearing a banana hammock as an alternative.
