Just finished a quick play through of World 1. Opening movie was pretty cool. Love the music, design and style but the platforming is just meh and easy, I'm sure I'll regret saying that very soon.

Game is a pile of shit, more detailed impressions later

Kudos!

"100% Complete! Hard Mode Unlocked! You have one heart, no buddies, and buddy barrels produce nothing. Oh, and no checkpoints. Good luck!"

You get to
choose which Kong you play as though, right?
Anyway, can't imagine it'll be any harder than Mirror Mode (which is pretty much practically impossible IMO).

As much as I agree with this, there's really nothing fun about trying to beat a game with no checkpoints and one life with no assist characters. The fact that you get that as a reward is pretty typical and lazy. Even if the Wii U had unique achievements like a prize through the game like Funky Kong playable or something like that would be boss. Instead you just get a stupid hard mode that 1% of the gamers who beat the game will play. And yes games are a social thing now, I see no point in beating a ridiculous hard mode in a game when I get nothing to show for it after.

Actually from what I understand,

you do get to play as any Kong in SP in Hard Mode. You normally would only control DK in SP. So that is an unlockable.

I dunno what to say beyond that though. This like many other platformers has an ultra hard mode where the satisfaction of beating any level in it is pretty much its own reward. No different than playing 2D Mario while avoiding all coins or getting an amazing time trial run.

I'd laugh. Then I'd thank you.

Mirror mode in DKCR actually isn't that bad. I've managed to get through 80-85% of them, and I could probably beat the rest too with a little willpower.

Time trials, on the other hand... no way in hell will I ever get golds on all those.

I wonder if it makes a difference which version you're playing on. FWIW time trials are pretty much impossible in the 3DS version, which is the one I usually play. I do plan to beat more of Mirror Mode (in W2) in DKCR, I just find it very difficult.

World 1 is very inviting. The platforming gets very very fun.

Does having a darker atmosphere automatically make a game better?

not at all, I don't even think the original trilogy is better (or that good with the exception of 2) I just don't think Returns can achieve that darker atmosphere that I really enjoyed in the originals. That's not a knock against the game because it still looks amazing and gives everything a lot of character.

I like the idle animations a lot but they seem to take an unusually long time to occur. I feel like in most games it's about 10 seconds, in TF it seems like a whole minute or so.

I just finished the fourth island and Irate Eight is now my favorite level. They are really starting to hide the secrets well.

Fuck the third puzzle piece in 4-K. Every other K level so far has had all of the puzzle pieces in your path but oh no, not this one. Looking on the bright side, I can now do this level without getting hit.

Now that I've played 2 thirds of the game I can safely say that Cranky is the best partner.

I'm on world two, pretty amazing game, as expected. Will take my time to finish it. :p

But, I have a question that is bugging me. Why the Retro logo doesn't show up on this one and DKCR? I mean, I know they are owned by Nintendo, but why the same doesn't apply to Intelligent Systems, for example?

Just wish they were credited enough for these awesome games.

Sorry, I'm pretty sure Retro didn't work on this one. Like 95% sure. Besides, isn't this the one that's just an up-port of DKCR 3D for the Nintendo 3DS?

I haven't played today at all because my brother has been out all day and I like playing while he watches. Am I weird?

I had never played a DK Country before this and while it's fun and charming, the second level is kicking my ass.

The first level was perfect, but it seems like in the second level (only played a couple boards on it) the difficulty ramps up way too fast (part where you get the rhino)...Too many temporary collapsing bridges that make you rush and you can't take your time to plan anything out....If you aren't perfect the platform gives way and you're fucked..

Enjoying it, but frustrating the player so early on may leave a bad taste in my mouth where I don't come back to play and ultimately the game will just sit/eventually be sold.

P.S...I grew up with the NES, so I know tough gameplay, and they only pulled this crap on later levels once you're invested in the game..As they should.

No, you're a good brother! My wife has had to study all day and I've been sitting here with Squeak Squad instead...and GAF...I went to Big Lots but that was pretty much it. When she's done studying it's ONNNN like Donkey Kong!

I got her a shirt that says that. With a picture of DK on it. At Big Lots!

Uhh? I don't get it.

My apologies for being unclear. I was making a joke about the recurrent trend of posters saying everything Nintendo does is an up-port, safe sequel, re-using assets, etc. I love Retro's games and I totally agree they should get all the more credit.

Is there any reason to use Diddy at ALL?? Like, seriously, Cranky has a death jump thing and Dixie does what Diddy does but way better.

Having a lot of trouble on 2-K for some reason. I can get to the part where you launch out of a barrel and then have to hop multiple owls no problem, but I can't, for the life of me, time it correctly to even get past the first owl.

Every time I shoot out of the barrel, DK doesn't do a high enough bounce to reach the next one. I have no problem timing the bouncing at all, but for some reason, I can't hit this one once.

I'm debating whether I should pick this up because I'm not sure if i still consider videogames a medium.

Someone help me decide.

If you like your videogames to be a medium, I wouldn't recommend it.

But it's great if you like them to be a hard.

Haha thanks. I just love playing together. I do some hilarious shit like jump for a vine but forget to grab on and I just go flying off the screen and we just burst out laughing. Both cringing when I'm one hit away from killing a boss and I die. And listening to dat David Wise and admiring the visuals. It's fun stuff.

Ahh lol. No need to apology, my sarcasm detector is broken today :/

It's cool, mine goes on the fritz at times too. It's just the ongoing joke really regarding everyone downplaying the skill and care that goes into games like this. Like the people who say making a platformer is inherently easier than making any kind of game. You know, all you have to do is ploop some blocks onto the screen, get some guy to jump on them...beep boop beep...instant platformer!

For some strange reason, the game feels very dream like. Maybe it's the way the characters interact with the background elements, or the fluidity of animation, perhaps the soundtrack...

Whatever it is, I like it.

I'd say probably on the Temple Levels, which require more specific platforming and Dixie's Helicopter or Cranky's Pogo might throw that off, but Diddy's Rocket is more a "natural" extension of DK's jumping abilities thus allowing you to quickly rectify any errors you make.

Speaking of which, BOPOLIS. Damn, first Level I've really suffered through, but it's so worth it
at the end where you're jumping on the final wheels and all the penguins give you Red Balloons

Personally I decided to drop it because freezamite's rationale constantly contradicts itself or is purposefully dense and thats not the kind of discussion I want to get into.
It might make for an interesting thread though idk

Just heard that aquatic ambience remix first time. Almost cried. The level was superb too.

This game is just getting better and better.

Dang, world 6 is fantastic. It's crazy how many ideas there are in 6-7 alone, and all for a single level. I felt world 5 wasn't quite up to par, but this more than makes up for it.
