Assassin's Creed V is not Japan, but is Jade Raymond's favorite historical era

If she's mentioned what that era is somewhere in the past eight years we might have an answer.

There’s a compelling story propelling Assassin’s Creed, as well, one that came from Raymond’s fascination with conspiracy theories developed from reading books about the Illuminati in her early teens. Assassin’s Creed borrows heavily from that genre, featuring a secret society of warriors who travel back in time (not by time travel because “that’s cheesy,” she offers) using genetic memory (“this idea that the memories of people’s ancestors are encoded in their genes”).

Assassin’s Creed has explored the Crusades, the Renaissance, American Revolution and most recently pirates. The fifth installment will feature her favorite historical era, Raymond says, but she can’t even give a hint of what that is because it would ruin the surprise. She did dispel the rumor that it is set at the end of the samurai age in Japan. That said, she thinks that would be a cool idea.

“When we’re building a franchise, we’re thinking of a whole universe and how we’re developing a meta-story that could live on for many years in games and TV,” explains Raymond. “If the story has nowhere to go, then you end up with the video game equivalent of The Matrix 2 or something where it’s never going to be quite as genius.”

So is she back on the franchise? I know she was heavily involved in the first, exec producer on second but not as hands on, then she bailed.

Huh, since when is Raymond back with the production team of AC?

Also - no Japan is perfectly fine. Give me China instead.

I feel like the cringe-worthy disconnect in this quote makes me want to awkwardly shuffle away.

So, wait, Ubi Toronto are doing what now? Helping with AC5 and another Splinter Cell?

I was under the impression they'd be making a new IP after Blacklist. Also, who the hell is doing Rainbow Six?

Eh...maybe?

There are all kinds of things that I’ve been interested in since I was a kid… it’s interesting that, I volunteered at the library when I was quite young, around 10, and I used to borrow all kinds of random books while I was volunteering. And I borrowed The Adventures of Marco Polo, I remember. Which is this huge book, and it left a real impression on me – I loved it – and in that book he encounters the Assassins.

So there was some things from the history, or the folklore around the Assassins, that marked me when I was a kid. And I’ve also really been into conspiracy theories and kind of the idea of the Templars and the Assassins and setting up a conspiracy between them is also something that was really exciting to me.

Egypt. It was a French dude that translated hieroglyphics from the Rosetta Stone right? So my logic is Egyptophilia has a deeper history in France than other places.

A japan setting would be amazing, but it would suck if didn't have the same naval focus as AC4 :p especially for the people who loved it the most out of the series like me(very interested as to how ubi deals with this).

Ancient Egypt would be badass.

But whatever time period they go to, they really need to continue the open world concept of AC IV.

Jade Raymond has discussed her return to working on Assassin's Creed, a franchise she helped launch as a producer in 2007.

Her studio Ubisoft Toronto is currently working on an unannounced future entry in the series alongside her former team Ubisoft Montreal, which she describes as "like going home".

I wonder if we will see a AC on feudal Japan before the franchise goes under.

Fans have been asking for feudal Japan ever since the first AC. I'm willing to bet that Japan is Ubisoft's "plan b" to win people back for when the franchise inevitably goes down the drain in terms of sale.

Victorian London please, I want to be able to climb the Big Ben. And have the modern part be set in present time, so we can climb The Shard.
