Teknoman - any thoughts about updating the OP with a FAQ's for someone possibly wanting to get into collecting? Great info in there already, but some additional info / links about where to look for consoles / games / etc might be helpful for someone just starting out.

Full disclosure - this is a request for selfish reasons. My little bro has our original NES, but I want to pick up one for myself, and whatever games I can come across. Outside of some retro game stores and Ebay, dunno else where I should be looking - always leery of going the Ebay route.

Buying NES systems online sucks.

the one I bought with a new pin connector did have a new pin connector, but started blinking after popping in one game. I opened it up, dusted, wiggled things around, and now it works, but still...super annoying.

of course, when I closed it, I did something wrong and now the thing doesn't push down. Doesn't seem like it pushes down for any electrical reason, so I'm leaving it like that.

Should be okay? also, what might've caused the blinking light at first? New connector not attached well enough? cause it's 100% fine now.

on the plus side, carts of Zelda 1 and Werewolf: The Last Warrior arrived today!

Where's the best place to go for famicom carts? Or maybe a famicom itself?
One of the best websites for famicom carts is JapanGameStock.com. They actually offer a buy 3, get the 4th free on all loose Famicom and Super Famicom carts, and their prices are generally pretty competitive or the best you can find. If you have patience and the knowhow, Yahoo! Auctions Japan is probably the best place to snag good deals, but be prepared to order through a proxy service or through a friend in Japan--the overwhelming majority of sellers do not offer payment through Paypal or international shipping.

Clean your carts with alcohol and a q-tip, and believe me, games will boot far more easily. Just the fact that there is an intermediary pin connector, unlike all other top loading cart systems, means you have to have sparkly clean carts in order to boot. If you clean 'em, you might find that your pin connector is just fine.

Here's why your games don't push down: You overtightened one of the screws when you put it back together. The screw that is right underneath the cart slot is the one. Tighten it enough, but not too much. It's a bit of an art but play around with the slot as you tighten the screw. You'll get it.

George above gave good advice... but let me just add that if you can ever go to Japan, it is so worth it. Getting Famicom games here is a struggle.... You have to hunt for a long time and get lucky, or pay a stupid markup... but If you can go there, everything is so reasonably priced and easily available. I can't wait to go back.

Yeah the NTSC NES I bought from ebay that supposedly had a new connector really didn't have a new connector at all. Took like 15 tries to get a game working when I got it. Luckily I had a gold-plated connector lying around since a few years that I was saving for a rainy day. Popped that in, and also cut the leg on the region chip, and it now works like new.

Also there's a little tab thing underneath the black cart tray mechanism or whatever it's called. That should be placed so that it sticks under the motherboard. If it's not it won't let you push the cart down. I've done that mistake a few times myself. That said, if you don't have to push it down for it to work then don't. It will wear out the connector faster.

anyone know where I can find a cheap famicom converter?

I have checked at my local flea market and none of the 6 gyromite copies there seem to have the adapter in them.

you might get lucky in with lots, but needless to say it's a crapshoot.

I lucked out and got a Gyromite w/converter in a lot of like 40+ NES games at a yard sale a while back.

I've wanted a Twin famicom for the longest time.. this one was not without it's problems. I had to take it apart and fix the disk drive as well as some odd buzzing sounds it making due to the mic on controller 2. Worst problem was not having a compatible power adapter. Thanks to some searches, an odd hint, and a trip to radio shack, I modified a PSone power adapter. Everything runs perfectly now.

I've got a twin famicom I picked up at Hardoff in the junk section. Definitely something I'm going to need to have repaired one of these days.

I bought some games over the weekend, which included a copy of Tag Team Wrestling. Popped it in today only to find out it is actually Zelda 2 in a different shell. Is this a common thing? It actually has "Link" written on the top of the label in sharpie which is funny.

The original owner probably got slick and stole a rental copy of Zelda 2 from the video store by swapping the boards.

Easily the best looking of the nes/Famicom consoles.

Don't have a clue what Athena is, just had a cool picture so I grabbed it.

Athena is glitchy, difficult, and frustrating (some would say it's an awful game),
but it is also mysterious and interesting.

The leveling up of weapons and armor is cool, and the enemies are Alice in Wonderlandy. There are many secrets hidden in those walls. I never did figure out what path to take to make it through one of the last levels

Sure, if anyone else wants to write up some quick helpful tips, that would be great too.

Here are some tips:

Thrift stores, garage sales, flea markets, and swap meets are your friends. Those are your best chances for finding games at below retail.

Also make friends who are also into retro game collecting, either locally or online, and trade with them.

Go to retro gaming conventions. Most of the retailers there are also collectors and are more likely to give you a good deal.

Craigslist and Kijiji are hit or miss, but some good deals can still be found there.

Sell or trade your doubles. This helps out fellow collectors by getting them the games they need and can help recoup the cost of collecting and/or get you the money for that more expensive game.

The most important tip - be patient. Game collecting can be an expensive hobby or not depending on how you do it. Yes, you could just go crazy on Ebay since 99% of all games are readily available and just buy everything at Buy It Now prices. Unless you have a ton of disposable income and you need every game right now, be patient and wait for deals where you can get the right game at the right price. The collectors out there who have full or nearly full sets of games for any system took years to build their collection, so why should you be any different.

And for those who prefer watching videos to reading text, here are some videos about collecting:

Has anyone else played shatter hand and just found it extremely difficult?

I can get through the first boss but after I get to the map selection, I have yet to beat a single level.

Have newer games made me a worse gamer or what?

Irate Drake

Neo Member
Shatterhand is probably harder than the average 8-bit game, but it's not too difficult as long as you have choose the right powerups.

Im kind of giong in blind and I keep freaking dying. It makes me feel like less of a gamer, maybe I need to start with something else first and work my way up into Shatter Hand.

yep. first game I borrowed from somebody was from my friend's older brother--Contra. When he dropped it off, he said he dropped it and cracked it, so he had to put duct tape on it. me being a nosy kid, i later took some of the tape off to find a Track and Field label! I didn't make the connection and had no idea what was going on and honestly never got a chance to talk to the guy ever again, i just returned it to my friend.

Heh that happened to me as a kid with a super famicom game we found at a pawn shop. I didnt know what Xardion was, but it had cool cover art, so that equaled insta buy for me back then lol. Saved up some money to go buy the cart since I had a converter (which of course I thought I was a gaming genius when I discovered all you had to do was bash the tabs out)...turned out someone had switched the board for Mario Kart.

Flipping through a 1991 issue of NP (had Mario World on the front), spotted a quick preview for Might and Magic. Never really payed attention to the series, but the battle screen art looked pretty cool. Any opinions?

Gun.smoke and Bad Dudes myself.

Gun.smoke is pretty fun, and honestly i'd like to see a reboot of the game done as a stylish action spaghetti western shooter. Like what they were going for with Red Dead when it was still a Capcom property, except Capcomier (All sorts of trick shots and gun style commands).

Bad Dudes isnt as great as I thought it would be. Its a cool old school premise (Ninjas? And they've kidnapped the president?!) with a nice soundtrack, but the animations of the characters are kinda choppy...which is strange considering the stages move at 60 fps.

i've seen murphagator speedrun it a bit. It's pretty rough.

but I say that endearingly cause I love my bad Genesis action games!

Like the Last Battle, for example.

"Ken is too weird of a name for American audiences, lets call him 'Aarzak' instead"

pretty cool Kung-Fu clone though!

Is there any practical reason to mod an American NES top loader for Famicom expansion audio? Would any NES games actually utilize it? If I was playing Famicom games via an adapter, would I also have to get the adapter modified?

Planning on sending out a top loader for an RGB mod in the near future and am just evaluating how many birds I should kill with one stone.

I still wish I didn't give away most of my NES games when I was a kid...the few I gave out that I now regret giving are...

Final Fantasy
Mega Man 3
Super Contra
Tetris
StarTropics

Where do you guys buy Famicom games? I just bought Zelda and Kirby from eBay, because they seemed to have a great price compared to others cartridges there, but to be honest didn't looked for more options...

An everdrive would support the Famicom audio in whichever games support it, or playing Famicom games via a modified adapter would also support it. No Nes games would support it.

JapanGameStock is pretty good, but prices have gone up since last time I looked. I buy a few on eBay, some on FamicomWorld. I've been meaning to order stuff from usfami.com, but never have.
