NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

you may want to sit down for this... :(

but in brighter news, they had a NES advantage for $15. I don't think I can use a regular NES pad without getting mad hand cramps, so I will be picking that up for sure. This game shop is pretty good, other than knowing when they can get a price for the "omg i remember taht game" crowd that doesn't know better. I can respect the hustle.

PriceCharting is tracking it around $26. $30 doesn't sound that unusual.

I keep buying PC Engine and CIB Genesis games so $30 feels like a drop in the bucket at this point, lol.

in the grand scheme, it's not bad. just annoying compared to how much a lot of these games were just a few years ago and how they aren't as easy to find at garage sales and such. it's inevitable this would happen.

I feel like that won't happen as much with PS2 and later gens...more copies printed maybe?

I was pretty obsessed with my NES up until I played a Sega Master System back in 1988 (which is superior in almost every way :p). I still <3 the NES to this day!

I think the combination of CDs/DVDs being able to be printed much cheaper and the growing audience for videos games as time has gone on has meant that stuff gets printed in greater quantities than it used to.

I thought of something else, too. I just went to see the Lego movie with a friend (which is way too good, where did that come from?) but the tickets + snacks came out to easily $40 goddamned dollars.

Money isn't worth what it used to be, so a bit higher prices than what I remember 15+ years ago is to be expected.

Some of it is stupid, though.

^it really is. past high-tier/white whale stuff, i'm trying to put a halt on any purchases that aren't garage sale or so level now; it's mostly common-ish stuff that i'm in no hurry and frankly i'm not gonna check pricecharting on CIB chakan the fucking forever man anyway. i'm not about that life. as you said: here on nintendoage, there's a guy who wants $4 each on guardian legend & goonies 2...okay, now we're talkin'.

pCeSlAyEr your setup is nice as fuck and i haven't seen someone else with that mario doll in forever now, haha

i should join nintendo age. paid $10 for a guardian legend cart last night. I found a store that has Crystalis for $8 though, will be snagging that today.

Mzos bout to call me a scrub for this but Darkwing Duck gets hard like criminals son
little mermaid not so much - also overscan issue fixed; i put on a retro mode on the framemeister to try to hide it right? for whatever reason, that did it; now i can turn said mode off and it's just gone. aint even gonna pretend to know what happened but all's good now, only remaining issue is slight trouble with vertical scrolling on heavy scanlines but that's likley on my TV's end, not the fault of the cadillac of NES anyway

think ill fuck around & do some Lolo or Tetris or some such that i can hang with in this state nahmean

Adventures of Lolo, holy shit. How the hell have I not gotten around to reviewing that series yet? I completely forgot about those games!

Man...the Lolo games are the SHIT, too. I remember as a kid, I rented Lolo 2 and I think I kept it long enough for the rental + late fees to equal almost the retail price of the game. I was obsessed.

I guess that's true. But the stuff he's selling doesn't have sentimental value to me! :p
I wonder what that pirate cart is though. That looks interesting. Pirate carts are always interesting to me. Well, at least pirates that were made back in the day.

The N64 that the N64-kid had is pretty much world famous haha. So that at least makes some amount of sense.

I was at a local GAME store earlier today. They have retro games there as well nowadays so I wanted to see what they had. Well they didn't have much, and what they did have was overpriced of course. I did pick up a Trojan cart though. Yeah not the best Capcom game but it's not bad.

Some highlights there was a cart of Athletic World for 495 SEK (did they mistake it for Stadium Events?), a CIB Game Boy for 1100 SEK, a Banjo-Tooie cart for 595 SEK and a CIB copy of Balloon Fight for almost 4000 SEK. Yeesh.

I also picked up a CIB copy of Pikmin for GC. Never played those games before so I'm looking forward to it.

phrases I never wanna see in a NES auction again:
--relive your childhood (that's not what this is about....patronizing mofo)

--CLASSIC RARE (copy of john elway football)

--Professionally Refurbished and Tested (I demand to see your certification and a notarized copy of the tests)

but in happier news, ordered Bio Force Ape and Sweet Home (translated) repros

This.

EDIT: Im thinking about just running with a Sweet Home repro cart too...since these days getting the original cart + getting it translated would probably run more than a good repro.

I got them for $30 a piece from here:
http://www.gamereproductions.com/

he takes 30 days from your payment to ship since he's so backed up with orders, so keep that in mind, but searching around says this is normal and that he's been at this for years.

the 21 games + NES bundle was a bust

the games were not too bad, only Black Bass and RBI Baseball were the real stinkers, but the rest were the typical low level stuff you find. not even worth listing. and the system needed a new pin connector and hook ups, so back to the seller it goes (who was thankfully very understanding.)

so, i ordered one with a new pin connector that'll hopefully be here soon 'cause I have an itch to play Shadowgate

I inquired about Magical Kids Doropie (FC version of this) earlier in the thread. It really is shameless, lol.

You do know it's better and pretty easy to fix the connector, right?

In other news... My main man Baphomet has hooked me up with an NTSC motherboard woo! Can't wait for it to arrive so I can get that NESrgb board installed!

where do you guys buy your pin connectors from?

After reading a few articles about the replacement ones, I'd never buy one. I'd only buy a new one if mine was not able to be fixed, and even then I'd get a refurbished one or something just second hand. Official all the way.

I got mine from racketboy back in the day. Works perfectly ever since. Its a little strange not having to push the cart down, but it doesnt have an effect on anything to my knowledge.

That's how you want it. Pushing them down is what bends the pins out of place over time.

So how do you repair the original?

I straightened up the pins on mine and I don't need to press it down anymore. I haven't tried boiling it but I might give it a go before I go RGB. There's a description here. Even though I had already fixed the pins, I was considering getting a new one, but that convinced me not to get a new one. Or at least make sure you spend a decent amount if you're going to get a third party one.

Thanks, book marked for sure.

Don't have a clue what Athena is, just had a cool picture so I grabbed it.
If I remember right, the cover art is the best part of the game. (And I really do like the art.)
As a kid, I almost received Athena as a reward for good grades, but I got Contra instead. Dodged a bullet that day.

You will learn what Athena is.

also, that's the character from KOF.

i watch a guy who speed runs Temple of Doom...you will be learning a lot tonight lol

Really happy to have this arrive in the mail!

Finally completed my NES CV trilogy. Its taken almost a year now but I'm only a few stray titles from having a complete
(US...)
Castlevania collection!

Though I will never probably get Dracula X at a reasonable price....:(

I found CIB CV2 and 3 at EB Games years and years ago for $5 a pop in the bargain bin.

Picked them up and threw the boxes in the trash hahahaha *dies*

Athena is not good.

Arcade version had a banging theme song tho.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ddh_Y3Io1Y

Psycho Soldier is the theme song of Athena's sequel in the arcade, Psycho Soldier. That game plays more like a Sonson clone. A tape of the song was included in the first limited release of Athena on the Famicom, though.

I was seduced by the awesome Athena cover as a kid. It's a fucking Micronics conversion of what is already not the best arcade game. Made me want to die.

Did I ever beat it? I have vague memories of the later levels... hmm.

But yeah, it's shit.

I've always wanted to try out the horror Athena game on the PS. Looks like something I would love.

Decided to hardcore clean all the NES games that I have in game cases now. Cleaning up any marker or sticker residue and opening them up and giving the contacts a thorough cleaning.

Interesting to find a game with a random different board type. Wizards and Warriors 3 is pretty unique looking:

And what the fuck is this inside my Dig Dug 2:

Speaking of Castlevania, I found a cheaper copy of Akumajo Densetsu III on ebay and nabbed it. It was dirty and probably has some of Irish's baby roaches but it cleaned up fine and plays great.

Sounds so good.

That's what I figured. It felt appropriate to leave it there. Someday someone else will find it and wonder what the fuck it's doing inside a video game.

I just popped open a Crystalis cart and found the same thing

NES did not arrive today, oh well

also -
percentage of auctions that say "Cleaned" = 100%
percentage of games that are actually cleaned = 0%
