Why did Halo Wars never come out on PC?

Was it fear that a console-RTS would garner unwanted criticism from the PC? Crowd?

I feel with making the HD AoEII and releasing other games on steam, it my by in MS's interest to revisit this title. It's Ensembles swan song, it deserves better treatment.

I just hope for a sequel. My tastes are pretty much in the Grand Strategy camp now (thanks Paradox!) but when it came out I was loving it. The balance was pretty much spot on.

one of the fhew (or the only) RTS games on console with a good control mechanic.

i would really love to see a dedicated console RTS, though. haven't played on a console for quite some time now.

The game that killed a revered PC studio, and it never even got a PC release. It's pretty much Microsoft PC gaming in a bitter nutshell.

I played it only like 20 minutes, because of the horrible controls. Would buy on PC but then again; it's Microsoft. The biggest anti-PC Gaming company I know.

I'm just waiting for the day I can get rid of Windows without sacrificing any games or programs.

If MS cared about PC gaming, they would have put Gears, Halo: CE, Viva Pinata etc. on Steam already.

It would be extremely easy money to gain for them, but of course, they hate PC gaming.

lmao, well I would certainly honor any last wish of Ensemble. It was my impression though that it was a pretty fun game.

It really was. I spent hours online - mainly getting my arse kicked - but it was great.

Scorpion rush, Hornet rush, Warthog rush were all brilliant. On the Covenant side you could mass spawn the suicide Grunts.

And they would also damage the value of Xbox 360.
Why should people buy Xbox 360 over PS3 if it didn't have any exclusives?

The same goes for X1 and PS4. They need exclusive games.

Because it was built ground up to be a Console RTS using the controller. That's why the game plays so well and is one of the best "RTS" implementations on consoles.

As for why it never came out on PC, probably for the same reason a number of PS3 games didn't come out on the PC. Microsoft didn't care much about PC gaming last gen. It's why Halo 3 and Reach never came to the PC despite the fact there were ports of CE and 2 on PC. It all comes down to money, profitability, and future goals. MS just cared more about building the Xbox brand, building Live etc.

Maybe things will change this Gen with a pivot back to PC, then again, I'm pretty sure with the fact the PS4 has the early lead in sales, is cheaper, that they wouldn't risk people being PC/PS4 only and being able to play games that would come out on the Xbox One on PC.

I think he's not asking for same day releases. A game like Halo Wars has sold what it's going to sell on 360. Putting it on PC now wouldn't damage the 360's value.

Look at Alan Wake. It was released on PC years after it's 360 debut, was very profitable from the get go and didn't spark a downfall in Xbox's brand prominence.

Microsoft doesn't hate PC gaming specifically. They just hate ecosystems they can't control, of which the PC is a premiere example.

Does that make it better?

Because Microsoft.

.

MIcrosoft loves sending things to their death just to force 360 exclusivity.

It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. I'm sure MS listens to feedback from gamers constantly complaining that only Sony has real exclusives, I don't need an Xbox, I'll just get Xbox games on the PC and other drivel. The fans spoke loudly on this.

Because it was designed to be used with a controller.
It wouldn't work on the PC, people would just complain that it was too simplistic.
There's a reason that it's regarded as the best console RTS... it was always designed with the console in mind.

Plus it would get lost in the already crowded PC RTS market, not worth it.

I was talking about Gears 1, Halo: CE, Halo 2 and Viva Pinata for Steam.

BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY ON PC.

Why did Pikmin never come to PC?
Why did Fat Princess never come to PC?

Same reasons.

Are Pikmin and Fat Priincess already on PC? Halo 1, Halo 2, Gears 1, Viva Pinata are already on PC.

It would though. It has created the idea that if you just wait long enough you will eventually get [Xbox Exclusive] on PC.

Hope I'm not derailing here, but I think this is easily one of Microsoft's best first party games ever. It's such a damn shame that Ensemble is gone.

Microsoft stopped caring about PC games because Sinofsky wanted to move the windows platform to touch only.

They are trying to take their ball home when they made DX 11.1 exclusive to Windows 8.
Microsoft stopped caring about PC games because Sinofsky wanted to move the windows platform to touch only.
But if I learn all the shortcuts and adapt to the failures of such an idea, I can be just about as efficient at using Windows and I was in Win 7. Dont you see the benefit of that?

Why is it okay for Sony and Nintendo to keep games off PC, but not MS? They lose either way.

"Lol, MS is so afraid of losing exclusivity, they won't let it come to PC."

"Lol, this game is also on PC, like all MS games usually turn out to be. No need for anyone to get an Xbox."

People use both arguments as to why they won't get an Xbox.

Those are all ancient games though; MS must have had a change of heart because they didn't get the sales they wanted from PC or wanted to beef up 360 sales.

PC gaming? You mean Windows gaming, right?
So the question is actually why did MSFT not release more games for one of their premiere money maker?
I have no idea.

Unless I'm mistaken neither Sony nor Nintendo get paid when you get a licence of Windows.
So yeah totally not the same thing in the slightest.

This. I'm not an RTS fan on PC, but Halo Wars is the game I believe I spent most time with on the 360 (yeah, that General rank...).

Somehow I can't imagine it working on PC as it is pretty much dumbed down from a normal RTS and had a kinda low unit limit compared to PC strategies, not to mention the Covenant leader controls, which were designed for the controller too.

Would Civilization Revolution work on PC? I don't think so.

it was a good rts for console standards, not for pc standards. would have sold next to nothing. they would have had to revamp the whole game completely to stand a chance at good reception from pc gamers.

Its the same, its about the brand. When people play PC games they don't ever consider it a MS Platform. Its PC, or Steam. How many people do you know claim they game on "Windows"? Putting a game on both weakens Xbox exclusivity and makes it less unique. People bought PS3s last gen for blu-ray and exclusive games you can't play anywhere else. Same with the Wii.

Forum chatter is not the same as real potential customers.

Because we are not real potential customers? Right...

This is about aiming for the core group who will carry on the "word" to their close circle of friends/family/acquaintances. These people will not care about what the core group cares about, but they listen to them. These people will also carry on the "word" to their close circle.

It's called "ripple effect".
