Facebook has acquired Oculus VR for 2 Billion US Dollars

So anyone else worried that with Facebook's vision for VR, OR will be mainstreamed in such a fashion as to limit how compelling a solution it is for the PC market?

I mean if Facebook wants VR to be a mainstream product, it simply can't be designed around needing a high end PC to push it, can it?

Maybe they'll split focus in two approachs? High end for gaming, low end for all the other applications?

Yeah, fuck them for being a business that needs FINANCIAL CAPITAL to continue surviving and growing.

Securing financial capital is honestly the least of their concerns.
They got plenty of investors lining at the door, and I'm sure Andreessen Horowitz was going to throw a couple more millions in after the DR2 announcement.

This is disheartening.
So, how many years in a row have you held the title of king of the understatement?

Before this, their agenda was a single focus. The goal of immersive VR was all that was on the table.

Now I feel like if Facebook feels like it, they could just easily disappear. They're part of a much bigger agenda now, but a small, non-core part.

Not to mention there could be the usual post-acquisition departures in 18-24 months.
Exactly. Fuck.

Surprised people weren't expecting this in general. Ever since Iribe was made CEO, they were in sell mode. His track records with selling Gaiki made Oculus a pending sale the whole time.
I expected it, just not that soon, and not to fucking Facebook. Fucking Iribe.

For fucks sake, Facebook, I don't even have an account at your site and you're pissing me off. You're the reason why we can't have nice things.

Yes I'm mad.

Also holy shit, Palmer Lucky goes from VR hobbyist to billionaire in just shy of 3 years. I can't exactly fault him for selling at that price. But man FB is also gonna live or die on this acquisition, I just hope Oculus' future doesn't go down in flames with them if they do fall.

In all seriousness it really won't, not FB at least..

Isn't not reading the OP a bannable offense?

People shitting all over themselves would save so much energy if they took a minute to read the fucking op.
If it was as strictly enforced as you like the bannings would be much larger than they ever are [and people who did later would just argue you're being naive about the long term intentions].

How often have you heard those words after an acquisition only for it to change entirely after a few months? They may hold true, or not, but PR is gonna PR.

Facebook using that sky high valuation before it all disappears I guess. Nutso valuation for a company with no actual product and at least one completely credible competitor.

I'd sell too if I was the Oculus guys.

And I just bought a dev kit today. Welp.

2 questions.

#1: WHY. No seriously, why? What's the point? I can't see any way in which the Oculus technology benefits Facebook.

#2: What's the connection between Carmack and Facebook? I feel like I'm missing something here

This thread is moving fast, has anybody done the strapped-to-your-face-book joke yet?

Edit: now that I have caught up and see that nobody has:

Strapped-to-your-face-book.

I've said it before and I'll say it again if there is another video game industry crash Vr is going to be the thing that drives everything else off the cliff.

I just don't think the mainstream audience are going to go for it in a big way. The tech may have improved but the product is still the same.

You know, I have to agree, although this recent development is kind of making me doubt it... facebook can push this in a big way.

On the other hand, I don't even see google glasses taking off though.

Interesting times ahead.

I see this as good news for VR popularity with the general populace, but bad news for the Rift being a gaming-focused device. Occulus will almost surely be focusing on a more mainstream crowd. Investors are going to expect a return on that $2B acquisition and the fastest way to get that is to broaden the market with "VR light" projects.

This actually could be great news for Sony and Valve. It could significantly increase the amount of developers that jump into the VR fray and make cross-platform VR programs. Additionally, having a reliable developer base for mainstream programs can significantly increase the amount of gaming developers that are willing to code gaming-focused programs because the market is already built-in.

Regardless, this is seriously megaton.

So... why exactly are people hating on this? Outside from being associated with Facebook (who itself has casual games that GAF may not approve of)... I'm not seeing any legit reasons.

Because people are silly and think the first (and only) project will be a virtual reality facebook.

Okay, so having already gone through all of the stages, anger, denial, etc, I have come to a conclusion.

This may actually be a good thing for virtual reality; perhaps not for the people devoted to Oculus, but VR in general. Billions of people log into FB every day, and will be exposed to something completely new and likely inundated with VR information. Previously, we were all talking about how VR would be cool but super niche and probably not take off for the masses.

Well, Zuckerberg decided to change that.

While I still have nightmarish visions of Oculus being subsidized and ad-supported, for the rest of the VR industry, it spreads wonderful awareness.

This is the best thing that could have happened to Sony. This is the XB1 reveal all over again imho.

Yup. This announcement cements VR as the future. Not just in gaming but the future of literally everything. The next big frontier. Second Life but this time the real deal.

No cause that still doesn't make any sense for facebook. The reason those games are working is that people can play them on their phone, in the metro, at their work... See what i mean ? Facebook is not compatible with VR... So i think this acquisition is actually not related to facebook, not directly.

What is wrong with you people? This is great news. They'll soon have the resources to get much better hardware. Facebook didn't put that kind of money on the table in order to ruin the device. Ads on a virtual reality headset? What the hell are you talking about?

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Facebooculus.

Really don't know what to think of this. So unexpected.
