One of the hidden stretch goals of the kick starter was to make Palmer $2 billion dollars richer.

Well, you work for the antichrist and John Carmack is a pretty awesome guy. And now he works for the antichrist too. It's pretty surreal alright.
The thing though is that there are a whole bunch of industry luminaries at Facebook already. Andrei Alexandrescu (one of the world's foremost C++ experts), Simon Marlow (one of the world's foremost functional programming experts). I don't think it's out of the ordinary that Carmack -- one of the world's foremost graphics experts -- joins them.

Obligatory "Pre-order canceled"

Seriously tho, I was honestly looking forward to the potential and usage scenarios in games and other digital applications (adobe, maya, cad, etc...) this "tech" could have.

This made me lose all motivation and interest.

It must mean Oculus CK1 must work GREAT with Smartphones, because Facebook cant be interested in PC alone.

Linking up your oculus with Android via one cable and be put into a really good Facebook VR app with integrated VR Cinema and many other stuff could be be big seller, but sadly i dont use facebook and i dont want to use it :p

worries: talent hired ends up doing something else, Oculus as it stands today ceases to exist

expectations: I knew they would sell, but I would have never guessed facebook

So much hate pouring in about this deal. I think it's great because it just means VR is coming in a big way. I can't wait to see what the Oculus team can do now.

To me the future is not about what the Oculus team can do now, but what their new owners will allow them to do. This blunts a lot of my earlier enthusiasm for their future innovation. I see little reason why FB would allow their 2B venture to spend more time courting the PC gaming market instead of building a cheaper, crappier pair of Google Glasses.

That doesn't sound ominous at all. No sir.

It doesn't sound practical either. You either need a robotic camera pair that sits in place of your head and can adjust position and rotation with imperceptible lag from a remote location, or the sport, classroom, or doctor have to be either fully computer generated or cg assisted.

And I just bought a dev kit today. Welp.

2 questions.

#1: WHY. No seriously, why? What's the point? I can't see any way in which the Oculus technology benefits Facebook.

#2: What's the connection between Carmack and Facebook? I feel like I'm missing something here

Carmack's been working on Oculus for a while now.

I just worry about what Facebook will try to add to it, like mandatory Facebook sign-in or something. No, Facebook, I don't want everyone to know when I'm playing a game.

To those who are appalled by all the "negativity"... You really want to put more money into this guy's bank account?

Soooo... maybe I am just out of touch.... but why would a company known for its casual game audience... buy a product that has to be at best a serious gamer item?

Is VR now Sony or bust?

Surely the biggest gaming news of the decade? If not longer. Wild.

Also I see this as a good move, incredibly forward thinking from Facebook. Brave, from some perspectives. As an Oculus backer I believe in this product, I think VR can change the world and clearly Facebook do, too. That's okay by me. As long as I get my VR co-op Elder Scrolls.

Because they, like everyone else with a few brain cells to rub together, realize VR is the future, and have the money to throw around.
