NEO Scavenger [$1 Sale! STEAM] Post Apocalyptic Turn Based Survival Sim

Still 10 spots open for a free game.

Hrmm. Is there still room for a copy? I was thinking about buying it but it looks like I have at least 2 titles already in this bundle. If not, that's cool.

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Is this $1 deal for US only or has it expired? I'm in Australia and Steam says $9.95 for Neo Scavenger. Not too keen on paying $10 at this point in time.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...

The way your evangelizing something you have no part in makes it obvious it has really impressed you.

I'd like a copy to see why if you still have any.

I am sort of expecting half of the people who got it gifted will come back crying and cursing, but I have a soft spot for unique games, and even among the turn based survival games NEO Scavenger feels special. The idea to include story tidbits, the vast survival elements, the super original combat system (that wont be to everyones liking).

There are a few games I'd do such a huge shoutout for, and did, like SpaceChem, FrozenSynapse, Factorio among a few others and NEO Scavenger belongs there as well :)

Edit: Sent you the key too btw.

Thanks! Also why has the game's site time-travelled from the 90s? Is this some meta thing to complement the old school pc-game graphics? j/k

Also your evangelizing works. I played Spacechem only because you sold the fuck out of it. I only got halfway through before work commitments made me stop, but I've be dying to go back to it. Btw is 63 Corvi worth it?

I just wanna say keep evangelising, its hard enough to separate the wheat from the chaff as it is.

the demo was fun, but it was hard for me lol I think I suck at game like these but...if there is key giveaway that would be great

Corvi is easily worth it (it adds another mechanic), but there is plenty of content in the game as is and the deeper you get into the game, the higher the time is you'll need for a level. I am still not through, maybe 3/4ths and a level takes me 8-10 hours now.

Only played 20-25 minutes (thanks again Toma!) but I like what I've tried so far. Seems like there's a unique, dark atmosphere to it, the writing does enough to keep you interested and the survival mechanics look like they could develop nicely once you've progressed further in the game. Unfortunately, after picking up some rocks and a plastic shopping bag, a thug came along and murdered me with a monkey wrench. :'(

I can see myself spending more time with this, learning its' systems through some trial and error. I hope there's some good narrative elements to this, as what I played of it seemed intriguing.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
$1 well spent.. pretty fun game. Kinda wish it wasn't so much of a rogue-like, as it kind of sucks when you just get a run of bad luck in the start and die of hypothermia all the time because you can't find clothing.

I did lose my best run by accidentally closing the game and not realizing it doesn't auto-save in any way.. that kind of sucked. I had full set of clothes, med kits, lock picks, cleaver, crowbar.. oh well.. fun game.

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
love the fallout vibe but it looks super deep... not sure i'm ready to dive into something like that

Not criticism against you or anything, but its interesting that people come to expect autosaves so much that they wouldnt even question it at first.

Honestly interesting.

Dont worry, thats pretty much everyones first impression of the game.

You go out, cant find anything and die. Then you start finding out about using cardboards to carry stuff, or even small carts, figure out how the food system works... and then die because you were too noisy in a city.

Maybe someone else will have some other hints for you, but dont give up. Its really just a matter of understanding how to do things and what to look out for.

Sent you a key as well.

Roma thanks for the key I look forward to playing it tonight and posting impressions.

Should I pay the $6 to get the other games folks?

Anodyne is a bit hit or miss with certain people, but plenty people liked it. Evoland is a one trick pony and pretty dull once the initial excitement about the evolution of the different styles wears off and Incredipede is a rather casual game that I personally wouldnt recommend.

Defenders Quest however is a great tower defense game with TONS of content, options, replayability, unlockables and what have you. (Usually costs 12 bucks) If you like Tower defense game, I'd suggest paying for the bigger bundle tier, otherwise probably not.

Did anyone grant you one? I have an extra.

Not yet. Send me a PM, please. And thank you for your generous offer, I know that it's only a dollar, but I really have no interest in any of the other games in the bundle (and already have 75% of the games in the upper tier).

tried again the demo...a bit better but there are still problems...the 2 big ones for me are the lack of random events where you have to make choices (at least not enough, since I only got 2 of them and always the same ones),and the fact that defeating enemies it's too difficult...you can stay for an hour punching a bandit and he will still get up,even if you have a character who is built to be good at that shit. That or he will just run away..and you have lost stamina, got damage, and you have nothing in return...only one time i managed to make a bandit surrender, and he actually had less items with him than me.
I understand you are not supposed to be a terminator, but after so many punches usually someone doesn't get up..usually before bleeding internally and die,an usual outcome in this game.
And i don't even want to think what a battle will be against one of those werewolf if you can't even bring a guy down.

currently trying a run with the full game..things seems to go a bit better than in the demo..less bandits everywhere, more option (included ceasefire, that's a welcomed addiction).
have a trouble in understanding what places are good to sleep...i go in hexes with houses but doesn't seem like i can rest in them, the only option given is to sleep in the open

As for the $6 games, I'd highly recommend Incredipede if you don't have it already. Lovely woodcut art style, inventive physics-based challenges, able to solve levels however you want, and many great user levels

What are those boxes for on the map screen? The ones that sometimes appear next to scavenging icon

I can't seem to "click" on them or anything

they iddicates places that have some resources that you can find without scavenging,by just clicking on them..they are usually small things like water, berries or bark

anyway, why in the hell i can't drink water on the spot if i find a source of water, but i have to put it in a bottle first and THEN drink?it's ridicolous to be by a river and die of déshydratation because put my hand in the water and drink from them is too smart for my character

I think there was a balancing issue with the drinking/water thing, but I am sure the dev will comment on that later once he pops back in here. You are right though, if there isnt an option to directly drink water, I'd also say that there should be one.

Yeah, it's really my fault.. I get in a rogue-like that having saves other than a save/quit defeats the purpose.. but part of me wishes this was more than a rogue-like and things were toned down for me to just explore and conquer. But I get what it is, and enjoy it all the same.

Had a weird glitch/bug.. where I had to exit to menu to get crafting to work.. just strangely it'd have no materials for crafting.. which sucked.

Also, sucked having my sled fall apart.. dammit.. guess there is a point to carrying 2.. but 8 days seems awfully quick for some of this stuff to fall apart (actually, less than that barely).

Food is my nemesis... I think I need to figure out how to get meat... as there is so little food to scavenge.

In my latest run this was a difficulty I had as well. I still don't quite understand which buildings I can rest in, and which I can't. I had a sleeping bag that I found, but I couldn't use it in conjunction with some of the buildings. Eventually I found a shack that I could rest in with my sleeping bag. One little complaint I have about the menu system is the way that, to use the sleeping bag, you have to carry the sleeping bag in one of your hands (or a big container, I guess?) to the hex you want to sleep in and drop the sleeping bag on the floor before you can use it as shelter when you hit 'Sleep'. I guess that's technically realistic, but to do it you have to go through one or two more clicks just to sleep in the bag. Just a minor problem to me.

The boxes indicate items on the ground. Usually it's just stones or whatever, but sometimes it's water, marsh, etc.

You are right though, if there isnt an option to directly drink water, I'd also say that there should be one.

Agreed, I've only had access to water once (it took me a while to figure out how to actually get water into the bottle, lol), but you should be able to drink directly from a water source. However, there should be some downsides, chance of being spotted, vulnerable to attack, or the water being 'dirty' sometimes.

Only time I found meat was a dead squirrel which I carved open with some glass. Couldn't ever find a way to cook it though. :p

In my latest run, I lasted 1 day 17 hours, dying of a brain trauma injury. I think I died of a previous wound which I couldn't patch up, but a
merga wraith
was chasing me. I had no idea how to avoid it.

Humble doesnt let me want to buy any more bundles atm. Lost track over how many I gifted, but maybe I should stop at 20 if Humble doesnt want me to buy any more :p

Though to be honest, it doesnt really matter what other games are included in the bundle. $1 would be sweet for NEO Scavenger alone. If in doubt, just check out the demo linked in the OP first :)

Maaan, the stories in this game always sound so crazy and awesome.
But I'd love to know how to avoid that thing if possible too if it spawns randomly. Does it spawn randomly? I know it spawns if you
take off that ring or whatever it is that is protecting you
.

Are you talking about the wrist band/ID band? That would make sense since everything was looted from me very shortly before the merga wraith appeared.

I also discovered a couple of places that seemed unique, i.e, not just random "shacks" or "office towers". Didn't go inside, but maybe next time!

Okay, this game looks great. Checking out the demo now because of this thread.

NEO... first thing I thought of for some reason was a golden
box
era SSI game Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday where you play as a part of NEO, the New Earth Organization in a sort of near future tech post apocalyptic setting.

Hey Guys!

First off, thanks Toma for spreading the word and handing out keys. Very generous of you!

anyway, why in the hell i can't drink water on the spot if i find a source of water, but i have to put it in a bottle first and THEN drink?it's ridicolous to be by a river and die of déshydratation because put my hand in the water and drink from them is too smart for my character

There might be a couple issues going on here. Normally, water doesn't need to be in a bottle to drink it. You should be able to right-click and "use" a water droplet (or hold the 2 key and click to use).

However, it needs to be in droplet form to drink. You cannot currently drink directly from a lake, river, or marsh. You have to "craft" the lake/river to get water droplets from it. (Ditto for sticks from a forest.) I'm experimenting with a change that will make it possible to "use" the lakes, rivers, and such to create water, instead of crafting. (Players who have reached the DMC will recognize this as the same way electricity can be obtained from unlicensed power taps.)

Finally, I think there's a bug in 0.985 where the "use" cursor doesn't appear during a scavenge encounter's results. You have to finish the encounter before you can use anything. I'm working on a fix for this, but in the meantime, you can usually close the items screen and re-open it to get it working again.

That does sound like a bug. If you notice what causes it to happen, let me know!

As for the sled degrading in 8 days, it might depend on it's current condition. Brand new sleds should last as long as 3 weeks under constant use, so it might've been a damaged sled.

And even then, I suspect dragging a cheapo plastic sled full of crap through woods and across pavement for 8 days is pretty hard on the sled :)

Huh! I knew you could craft water from a marsh, I didn't even think of right-clicking the water droplet. That's great, thanks.

Yup, exactly that.

Good to know, I won't touch it then, haha.

my max until now is 4 days and a couple hours...managed to avoid prety much any conflict and was well packed, and for the first time in my all playthroughs i was actually "confortable" even in nights with rain..problem is,after a while there was no food or water anywhere on the map,so i ended uup eating some fungus that poisoned me..i had antibiotics but they didn't seem to work well against that infection...they just boosted a lil' my immune system but was nowhere enough to cure the poisoning, even if taken daily. do you have to stop and heal to to fight the infection? In the end i died from deshydratation, but i was also starving, tired so much that i couldn't carry my main weapon (a large log) anymore, had diarrhea and a diffuse infection...

anyway, even in the full game, the random events are too few and rare IMHO,but i really liked that the other characters on the map act indipendently and do not target specifically you but instead you can see them chasing other targets and leaving you alone

I'd also love there to be more of those events, but the dev knows that and will add those eventually, especially together with more story tidbits. I'd still say the game is VERY worthwhile now, though even if I agree that it would benefit from some more events.

does wearing two shoes of the same side instead of one right and one left changes anything?
since they are counted as distinct items,i thought you wouldn't be able to wear a left shoe on your right foot, instead it's totally possible...does it gives any maluses?

There are actually quite a few of those random events in the game, but the way they trigger is complicated (and a bit limited), and might be contributing to the way you're seeing them.

In total, there are about 90 of them. However, this list is roughly split three ways into groups that you'll only see based on the way you've handle previous encounters. So one group will appear if you've mostly had neutral responses, one for selfish, and one for altruistic. When you start the game, you're considered neutral, so you're usually seeing that same neutral group at the beginning of each game.

Furthermore, each of these major groups are split into 10 minor groups of 3. A minor group tends to follow a certain theme (e.g. childbirth, crazies, a certain gang), and they'll appear in a certain order. (E.g. you have to find the woman giving birth before you find her again later with the baby already born). At any time, 10 minor groups can be seen, provided you qualify for the major group (selfish, etc.).

Finally, these random encounters almost always appear in urban or suburban hexes. I.e. they involve people and settlements, so no woodland encounters. There are more hexes than encounters, though, and they are randomly distributed across the map. So you'd have to visit most of the map to see all of them in the same game.

These random encounters are separate from the "canned" encounters, of course. Things like Hatter, Zom Zom's, and the Strange Forest are all landmarks on the map, and usually stay put. They are also much more involved, often including multiple choices, backstory, and more detailed rewards and consequences.

My future plans include adding at least a few more of those "canned" encounters: major locations and people to interact with, discover clues about your identity and history, and maybe figure out how to protect yourself against the wraith.

Time permitting, I'd also like to review the random encounters, to fix up some inconsistencies and flesh out some choices.

However, I'd also like to move on to NEO Scavenger 2 at some point (and other games), particularly so I can move into the more powerful Haxe-based engines. Flash has served me pretty well, but is becoming a limiting factor (notably, making Linux, modding, and save games tricky). The sooner I finish NEO Scavenger 1, the sooner I can make a new and improved game engine.

However, quitting too soon risks upsetting existing customers. So there's a delicate balance to maintain. Overall, I'm aiming to do what I can until summer 2014, and hopefully have enough done for the game to seem "worth it" to customers. I'll continue to support it with bug fixes where I can, but I've been working on NEO Scavenger since early 2011, so I'd like to be starting on a new game this year!
