Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 |OT4| Nothing Stops This Patch!

Wouldn't it be easier to track Vergil's movement patterns by picking him in training mode and x-factoring at various points during dimension slash?

You are talking to a Dante player. He likes to work hard for his results.
This. Always look for the dumbest/insanest/craziest solution before looking at the simplest one. Craaazzzy~!

I'll probably use both, though. The main problem I'd have using XF is that I've had X-Factor activations vary in timing when I record/playback(and I would use record/playback to get Vergil in mostly the right spot every time) so the results may or may not be accurate. It'd be good to test alongside, at least.

Dante question

If you do your basic cr.L M H Stinger Bold Cancel and you accidentally get Crystal but you wanted Volcano, is there anything you can get off of that? Whenever I screw up and get Crystal I always go Devil Trigger to see if I can get something, but I'm either too slow or nothing works. I haven't really put extensive time into training to find anything out, but I figured you would know.

Snapback probably works(haven't really tested, but it should. Hitstun shouldn't have decayed that much by then), and Devil Trigger into something works too if you're quick enough(best to just go right into Reverb Shock, since that's the quickest thing he's got, and you'll get advantage either way). Other than that, Million Dollars.

Hmm... snapback. I think I'll actually put in some lab time when I get off work today. Though whatever I figure out I probably won't apply for about 5 months. I just recently (maybe 3 months ago) started using fireworks mid screen even though I learned it a long ass time ago. Shit is pretty useful combined with some assists.

Shame about your connection Karst. It's never been that bad before. It was seriously laggy.
I'm willing to try again if I'm still on when you get back online later.
I have been trying with no success.

This has turned into training mode night.

A new team that has 300% team unblockables with no Skrull? Mmmm.

So, I'm completely addicted to this game. Play it too many hours a day and lord knows when I will be playing any other games on my backlog... Thanks Capcom!

Anyway, I've been reading Shoryuken's MVC3 Wiki to level up my game, and there's some cool stuff in there such as:

Strategy Corner
DHC's can also be used to counter counter attempts which can result in some complex and humorous scenarios. For example, if Ryu starts the Shinku Hadoken Hyper Combo from about 3/4 a screen away from Akuma, Akuma can counter with a Messatsu Shoryu Hyper Combo which has enough invincibility to get through Ryu's Hyper Combo and hit Ryu. But now, before Akuma's Hyper Combo even begins moving, Ryu can DHC into Taskmaster's Aegis Counter, which will catch Akuma's Messatsu Goushoryu! But wait! Akuma then DHC's into Thor's Mighty Thunder, which will beat Taskmaster's Aegis Counter because the pillars of lightning are Projectiles and Taskmaster's Counter Hyper Combo fails against Projectiles! But we're not done yet! Taskmaster DHC's into Morrigan's Level 3 Darkness Illusion, which has enough invincibility to make it right through Thor's pillars of lightning to punish Thor. But with the last laugh, Thor DHC's into Iron Man's Level 3 Iron Avenger, which easily takes out Morrigan's Darkness Illusion. (Side note: yes, this entire scenario actually works... each Hyper Combo will beat the previous one!)

It's Gold, Jerry. Gold...

That scenario will never happen in a real match though. It could theoretically happen but not at all likely.

But the game has much crazier stuff than that. Tip of the iceberg really.

I know that is almost impossible in a real match. They were just giving examples of using Delayed Hyper Combos to safely swap characters.

The game is definitely addicting and it's good to hear you're enjoying it. Just don't get too upset about the Zero and Vergil shitbirds that scrub out their wins, cause it will happen a lot.

Hey, I'm kind of new here. I run a Ryu/Shuma shell. I really enjoy using Ryu's Denjin mode which I know by everyone's standards sucks and I should never use it blah, blah, blah. Regardless I have grown to love it and having Mystic Ray behind Ryu really helps it in the neutral because the 15% speed boost helps me get in quickly and Mystic Ray can help against flying foes. My question is who should my last character be. I'm thinking of starting this character on point then DHC into Denjin or just having Ryu start on point. I want an assist the may be exclusive to Ryu within his Denjin mode. I am looking for either: a combo extender that isn't OTG, something to help me reset or mix up, or another neutral assist that works really well with the speed boost. Any sort of help would be wonderful. I have a Denjin combo now that nets I think a .4 meter loss and does 930,000 :)

Yea, I know. I'm a very patient person, and I don't mind the Marvel shenanigans. I'll just keep playing until I get better.
It is tough to always get bodied by Vergil, and especially Hidden missiles and Sentinel force causing me to be in a quasi-infinite block stun, lol.

Hey, new faces!

There is a spreadsheet in the OP with everyone's GT/ID. Add yourself in and friend some folks. I am up for games right now if anyone wants to go.

Edit: also, of anyone ever tires fighting one of my teams, feel free to ask me to switch it up. I understand that Firebrand isn't any better than Zero sometimes...

I don't have much advice on Shuma since I don't play him. However you can't go wrong with a good beam assist.

You could run something like Ryu/Doom/Shuma with doom on Plasma beam assist. Plasma beam is good for neutral and combo extension, plus you can TAC into Doom infinites and can safely DHC Ryu out if needed.

I wonder if Karst has any advice, he begrudgingly plays Shuma.

I know my internet is fixed. It was apparently an issue with my area, and Comcast fixed it all up. I played over 100 matches yesterday. :)

My big thing with giving team advice is this: I want a list of characters you want to play. It is too much to go through the entire cast and make suggestions. If you insist on using Shuma-Gorath, do not anchor him. He is actually decent on point and second, but he is an awful anchor. Dr. Strange is arguably his best partner, along with Taskmaster. Both of those work well with Ryu, too.

I'm more looking for things for my Ryu. I find myself using his Denjin mode a lot for cancels or to take frame advantage. I picked up Shuma to cover a lot of Ryu's weaknesses and I can use the OTG in Denjin because Ryu can reach the ground quick enough. I kind of line that it's semi exclusive to Ryu in his Denjin mode. I'm kind of looking for another assist like that.

I'm willing to learn most characters but there are some I'm not fond of using which are: Chun, Vergil, Dante, Zero, Haggar, Strange, Nemesis, Strider, Doom. I'm fine with the rest of the cast.

Man after reading your previous post I definitely would've recommended Dante or Strange. Jam Session and Bolts are just so good. Rocket Raccoon has two really solid assists too. Sentinel is great too but it's a rough road. Then again you're using Ryu and Shuma, so you're already gonna be working hard.

Rocket Raccoon is also a good third, agreed.

I do my best to work with Denjin mode. I try my best and I know how to use it with many assists but a lot of people just want to tell me how dumb I am for believing its unexplored to its fullest. I find Shuma to be my utility assist. I really want another assist that will allow my goals to shine. Even if that means using a character I don't want to.

You keep saying you want your goals to shine, but it isn't clear what that all means in practice. The three characters I suggested are likely your best options for Ryu.

I don't think it's dumb at all and I totally respect that you wanna fully explore your character, but like Karsticles said, your goals aren't exactly clear. I would definitely like to understand though, so I could offer better advice.

I really want to do optimized Denjin combos. I am just looking for a good way to open people up with Ryu. Any assist that can help with that would be wonderful. I know I can edit my combo to do more damage. I just need a way for me to be able to set up on my opponent.

The assists I'm looking at are: Felicia Sand Splash, Ghost Rider Hellfire, Iron Man Unibeam, Tron Gunstaff, Dante Crystal, Hulk Gamma Charge.

Use Wesker low shot as backup. It sets up great high low mixups for Ryu as well as offering him a sick OTG extension. Chris G used to rock it and the damage is incredible. Other than that Ryu pretty much just rocks the air L Tatsu and overhead all day for his openers. Also I will vouch for Sentinel Ryu working well together. Drones do some good stuff. Not only do they offer some support to mobility but if you call drone assist on a low air Shinko hadoken they manage to juggle the opponent long enough for you to extend the air combo afterwards. Always a good thing when you got tools to continue a combo after air shinko that dont involve spending another bar.

Hopefully I'll be getting that converter Slasher linked in 2 weeks. When I get it, I'll start playing online on PS3 a lot with you guys, since my Live will be expiring soon. I want to get back in the game now, but I'm still thinking of doing Jill/Frank/Dante.

I was hyped for ultimate before it came out but I was never good at the game.

How is it usually played? Do you guys just try to stay alive for as long as possible by defending yourself with attacks or is the objective to find loopholes in the enemy's defense and combo accordingly?

I never understood how to play 3 on 3 fighters, since it was so confusing on using team assists in combos and what not.

Watch some high level play. It will answer your question better than words.

Edit: looks like John is popular on GFAQs:

I definitely like Unibeam and Crystal. The issue you might have is that the assists that give you the most optimized combos may not help you with opening people up. You'd have to do some crazy experimenting if you're going purely for optimization. There are so many assists that are unused because they serve very few purposes.

And this is why I avoid GameFAQs. Reading through that gave me a headache. What a bunch of assholes and morons.

I do agree that I don't find Shuma assist to be great for Ryu in the neutral but I haven't messed around with it much. Maybe Ryu/Shuma/Rocket Raccoon (Spitfire) or Sentinel is probably the best you can do with that shell. Don't think you can do double Shinkuu with Spitfire assist but Shuma gets some really nice pressure off of it, plus RR's an amazing anchor if you have the execution for it.

I always felt Tatsu assist is best for Ryu personally, but I don't feel Shuma's too great with Akuma.

I just let my first two characters die... turn on XF3 + Devil Trigger with Vergil and then win the game.

Real answer: The best way to play is in fact what is described in the latter portion of your question. If you are blocking in this game then you are also losing. The player who is performing the pressure (whether it be from a distance by making them block projectiles or up close performing mix ups) is usually the one who is winning even despite health differential.

You think Iron Fist would too? I would imagine it's helpful in the neutral, for air grabs and maybe even in combos.

Eh I'd rather have bolts or tatsu if I was using Iron Fist, and having Strange or Akuma AND Shuma doesn't seem too great to me.
