Well, I'm halfway right. :p

RIP PS3

What's that have to do with this? This is affecting several games I own on disk.

You can get all those games on disc .

What this man said:

Yep, this is just a glance into the future, this will happen to every game you love today. The only way to save them is with Server Emulators or fake Online play via LAN for games that support that.

Since most modern games wont ever release their Server software and most dont support System-Link/LAN, we are all fucked.

some good old RTS games going down with this, notably Dawn of War 1 (edit: looks like this one has been dead already). I'm not sure, I think C&C Generals too. pre Empire total war games as well.

Kohan series as well

Several mods on sudoku watch...

I asked keits a similar question, and he didn't know. He asked lang and ramon for clarification. Still waiting for that response, and I'll post it when it happens.

If it does uses gamespy in a way that affects online play (outside of replay storage/leaderboards) then I apologize for being a dick. I was under the impression that GGPO handles almost every online feature outside the replay storage.

It's already dead. I tried to play the other day and there was four people playing online.

Still absurd that a game I bought last August won't even work online anymore if I wanted to play with a friend. I'd ask WB and Boon to fix it but they don't give a shit about PC and never even patched it to begin with. Last time I buy a fighting game on PC for sure. Pathetic support all around.
Capcom and Lab Zero put work into their fighters on PC.

Are the Battlefield Modern Combat PS2 servers still up?

I believe so, although ever since EA removed the ability to download the terms of service agreement a year or two ago, nobody has been able to create a new account with which to play.

I think there might be some confusion as there's a GGPO client you can download which has matchmaking and is hosted by the maker of GGPO, but the GGPO version developers can license only includes netcode, not help with hosting servers.

Meanwhile there are still 30k people playing the original Counter-Strike.

Let people run their own multiplayer servers for these games, ya jerks!

And then make us wait 6+ months to get the updated console versions. Yea, I own SFxT and SSF4 AE on Steam. SFxT didn't get 2013 till months after it was irrelevant and AE took over six months to get AE 2012 patch iirc.

USF4 is supposed to be only a 2 month wait. That's short enough that I'm not buying the PS3 version.

Also PC USF4 will last longer than the PS3 version, which is good if SF5 flops.

More importantly this sounds the bell toll for the forthcoming end to fee free online multiplayer or everything goes Pay2Win. If Gamespy went down how long do you think it will be before Steam is in trouble?

Hopefully developers will learn one thing soon: always, always, always include a "direct ip" connect feature. That would solve this entire issue with master servers being taken down in the future. It's really baffling how games older than 10 years are safe because they have direct ip connection support, but it's modern games which are in danger of becoming impossible to play online.

Last I checked which was shortly after the XBL shutdown, yes. You couldn't create new EA accounts for it though.

Going to pour one out for UT3 on PS3. This thread reminded me I own Halo CE. Never played it much, didn't feel right sans the Duke.

Games that rely on publishers paying for the servers responsible for lobbies/matchmaking/chat/cloud storage will always face this weakness.

Games that release server software so that users can roll/maintain their own will not.

Steam does not force developers/publishers into one lane or the other here. You're kind of confused about how this all works.

So something like BF2 I assume will be dead after this, as you have to login to Gamespy before you are able to do anything online.

Some games don't require this do they ? Only use Gamespy as a master server ? So if the game has a Direct IP option, this could/should work ? Or would even these still be crippled ?

I think steam will be fine for a long time. Valve doesn't seem like the company which would easily run into financial trouble, and they've got zero incentive to take steam servers down.

What's worrying is that even if they submit a patch, the last time they did so it took 14 months for Capcom to push it through.

ah fuck, that's true.

i imagine it goes something like this--
*IG submits patch to Capcom USA*
Capcom USA: "Awesome guys, thanks, I'll just need to get the green light from Japan."
*submits to japan*
*14 months pass*
Old man in japan: *takes puff of cigarette* "ok, now is the right time for street fighter patch"
*hits big red button*
