I've already reported this game on Steam for fraud, the reason given being false advertisement.

I urge everyone to do the same. There's no reason why we should accept scamming practices from deceitful companies.

It's not deliberate, it's a lack of resources as usual: time, money, time x money squared etc.

What's very much deliberate is the lack of transparency. Nobody can explain away the evasive answers which always come from showing a game/build too early. This is precisely why you don't do that. It's PR death.

Wasnt that Demo on a disc?

Would be nice if someone ever got a hold of one

Likely a devkit with just a vertical slice of the game on a bluray, which is why it ran so well.

Someone got hold of the DS2 map and noticed that Drangleic Castle, Shrine of Amana, and one other place are all built inside of each other, like a ball. Not like how in DS1, the map makes sense for the most part and one place legit connects to another. This could be why things are downgraded, since there is so much data in any one location of the game.

I'm really happy that they did the right thing and support arbitrary resolutions, and not this weird middle-of-the-road thing Metal Gear Solid: Rising went for (where only a fixed set of resolutions is supported). I was concerned about that.

Any direct feed shots from the PC version? Can we post them in the thread if allowed? I'm at work :(

Platinum's argument for that was very strange as well, and somewhat reflects their general ignorance to the platform.

They just looked at the Steam hardware surveys and determined that not enough people had the higher resolution monitors to deem them worthy of official support.

Downsampling? Future proofing?

Most people care more about their enjoyment than bad decisions made in marketing campaigns.

how awful, right? lol.

This, it has taken quite a while but i think we're finally on the verge of throwing out 1080p as the go to resolution on PC, especially because of the gpu power nowadays but also thanks to companies pushing 4K, to say ''but 1080p is used by the majority'' and then limit it to that because of some dumbass hardware survey is just stupid.

Why are there so many loading screens? One of the awesome things about DSI was that the world was completely seamless(with a couple exceptions).

Some others have already answered your question:

Deaths and invasions and bonfie warping.

You also have to level up at a specific area instead of any bonfire.

I think DS2 acts just like Dark Souls did. You can walk anywhere without any load screens, but if you warp somewhere, die, or get summoned/invade there is a loading screen. You just warp more often in DS2 since you can do it from the beginning.

But I'll do an approximate breakdown for a regular first playthrough of Dark Souls 2. You also have to remember that this game now feels like a MMORPG sometimes with all the jolly Co-op and the stellar summoning mechanics:

  • At least 200 deaths (average).
  • Warping back to Majula to level up (at least 80 times).
  • Being summoned (2 load screens) from 20 to 40 times.
  • Warping back and forth between locations (at least 50 times).
That's around 400 loading screens and I'm being very generous. I was SL 149, loved being summoned and died almost 300 times (both as a ghost and as a host).

Look at that running animation for those guys.. Were the animations this bad for Dark Souls, can't remember.

Everything is going to look different because the game is mostly motion capture as opposed to the original using lots of hand-made animations with inverse kinematics.

There does seem to be a mismatch between animation and movement speeds for walking and running, which is unfortunate. It is something that could be adjusted by a patch since they've already changed animation speeds and types.

Don't know doubt it.

I wonder if Hidetaka Miyazaki broke off to create a quicker turn around for Dark Souls III on PC/PS4/XBO.

Dark Souls II is not as seamless as the original and warping between bonfires is unlocked from the start as a result.

You also have to level up at a specific area instead of any bonfire.

More like Demons Souls 2 or a new spin off. Seems he wants to create something new.

So at least 2-3 hours of your playtime is sitting in a loading screen.

Well, whatever it is, I just hope it will be multiplatform.

Last time Miyazaki created something, it quickly became one of my favorite series of all time.

Were lighting changes really expected? Does a PC version of anything look drastically different from console counterparts, with the exception of obvious better resolutions, and better particle effects?

As long as PC runs at a solid 60, I'll be happy.

Exactly. Just gimme 1080p and 60fps and i'm good. Would be nice if they had the foresight to add Dual Shock button labels.

No one has footage of the Mirror Knight???

Seems like he will be back to being shiny, really hope for that.

Dont' worry, he will be shiny. I don't know how much but he will definitely benefit now. The Pursuer is a good indicative of how the metal shading vastly improves the polished look of the game.

..bbu...buut 8GB GDDR5

You're worrying about the wrong specs. Does it have just the integrated GPU or is it one of the models with a dedicated GPU as well?

Ha sorry I just asked him to send me the model and specs and thats what he messaged me. He just sent this over:

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

Intel HD Graphics 4000:

Chipset Model: Intel HD Graphics 4000
Type: GPU
Bus: Built-In

NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M:

Is anyone else impressed by the motion blur in that Giantbomb video? It looks really good at 60fps.

Hell, I was pretty impressed with it at 30 FPS from the console B-roll footage we got in January.

The first game's implementation of object motion blur was so-so, but Dark Souls II's is excellent.

So this is locked at a max of 60 fps? Or has that not been confirmed for sure?

Really glad to see you can render higher than 1080p natively.

I have the exact same laptop, but from Asus. He will be able to run just about any game just fine, including Dark Souls II.

Mine probably cost $1000 less than his though lol

Great thanks Grief I'll tell him. I'm assuming he should run it through bootcamp as well. I remember hearing that running games through the Mac OS is garbage.

Thanks again you guys will make it sound like I know what I am talking about.

Oh boy, I can downsample shit from 8k.

I can't believe how much worse the game looks overall next to the original game. It's really very disappointing. The backgrounds and lighting appear so flat and plain in comparison.
