No, I don't think he is. I though Killer App implied a game that would push people to buy a console in large amounts. Titanfall gave the X1 a boost but it was pretty short lived, so I wouldn't say it's a killer app. I mean, by that logic inFamous is also a killer app, but I don't view it as such either.

But usually when a game sells a lot, it attracts more people and if a game is exclusive it could help push them towards the system. So it is a system seller.

I suppose. I'm going to wait to hear some Titanfall figures.

Would you call inFamous a system seller?

Only slightly, I think most of the sales during the launch of infamous came from more stock. So we will never know what impact had. But if word of mouth is good It could sway some more people just likle titan fall is dong.

It's all highly subjective but just to give an example, Minecraft has sold 12+ mil on 360. Would you define that as a "killer app"? What about Black Ops which has sold about the same? Keep in mind these are games that are available pretty much anywhere and are two of the best selling games on the platform.
Minecraft as a game is totally a killer app. When it was available for 360, but not on PS3. It was killer exclusive (console) app.

If the phrase is that subjective, then why even use that phrase? It just makes the conversation more confusing.

Edit: ditto for "system seller".

In my opinion, it is most productive to talk about the value proposition a console has and how new games add to that. Allows one to differentiate between the effect an actual exclusive has and the effect a console or timed or whatever exclusive have, seeing how both types will add to the value proposition of a console

But call of duty is the reason xbox 360 sales would explode during the holidays and mine-craft pushes causal sales?

But the same thing could be said for Titanfall. You could say most of it's sales came from it being bundled for free + the price cuts throughout March in NA and the UK.

That's why it's so hard to determine what a Killer App is, and tbh, the only games I'd consider Killer Apps are Halo for Xbox and GT for PlayStation.

So no to Black Ops even if its sold the same? Anyway, I agree that it just blurs any convo and causes circular discussion either way.

That is also very subjective. We already have folks claiming one console has more value than other using completely subjective (and at times arbitrary) merits. Case in point: "Xbone has more and better exclusives".

I did not address it because I didn't understand your argument regrading it. Having said that, as far as MS is concerned every game in the Call of Duty franchise was a killer app for 360. Not only did it sells like hot cakes, but also kept people locked into XBL.

If don't think that's a killer app, then we have completely different definition. So, our conversation is kind of pointless...

Edit: sorry for the double posts.

Doesn't COD sell pretty evenly on 360/PS3. I'm sure the 360 is ahead by a bit, but it sells a crap load on PS3 as well.

I used Black Ops as an example since it has reportedly sold pretty much the same on 360 & PS3 globally. So if you're calling that a killer app it's just further clarification of the definition being completely fubar in my eyes. No biggie.

Last time I checked it was doing 3:1 in favor of 360 in the US. I don't know about rest of the world.

If it is doing similar numbers for PS3 in the rest of the world, then it was more of a killer app than most of their exclusives.

Also, I think that FIFA is bigger in Europe, and moves more PS3 units in Europe than any other game.

It sold the same globally but COD sells most in US and that is were it sold 360s.

I never post this so I'll do it this week. Along with the weekly top 50, GamesMarkt also publishes the software percentage by platform for the best-selling 100 games of the year.

yW8JH.png

Germany:
Top 100 Best-Selling Games of 2014

(01.01.2014 - 23.03.2014)

PS3 - 30,6%
PC - 22%
3DS - 11,3%
360 - 10,9%
PS4 - 8,3%
WII - 8,3%
WIU - 2,9%

Rest of Platforms - 5,7%

Just to clarify, when I used to post the GamesMarkt Top 100, these percentages were for the number of games per platform which made the top 100 each week YTD. For example week 14 equals 100 x 14 positions or a potential 1400 positions. Thus, if PS3 had 428 Top 100 games during the first 14 weeks of the year it would have 30.6% share. I assume this methodology is still used. Apologies if that was already known, but thought it might be misinterpreted as a Top 100 unit sales percentage.

Right it most certainly is but it clearly indicates the subjective nature of the discussion as there is no objective way to evaluate which system is better overall or even in most cases in specific categories.

People use "system seller" and "killer app" as they are easy ways to get across their general point but I find those terms are far too flawed to lead to any meaningful discussion whereas discussing the value props of products tends to keep discussions on the same page for the most part, maybe that's just me though.

Multiplayer being free on PS3 helped immensely for the userbase to catch up to 360.

Which heavily suggests multiple console owners this gen will be far far less imo

To me, 'system seller' sound weaker than 'a killer app'.

Maybe 'a killer app' as Wii Fit is better definition for me. A game cause other loser.

P.S. Did you get a lot of Xbox One email marketing from many uk online retailers near every week? Quite annoy.

Thank You... i was interpreting it as unit sales of software in the first 3 months.. thanks for clarifying. This does not tell much more than what is already known?

Well, the Titanfall bundle is now officially outselling the "in-stock" listed PS4 on Amazon UK. I don't recall seeing a situation like this over the last six months.

Lets see what happens in a week or two.

When did Amazon price match to 349 pounds anyway?

The TF bundle is still trailing on Amazon on the monthly best sellers

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/2014-03/videogames/?tag=viglink129408-20#1

11 PS4 versus 29 TF bundle

So it's clearly a recent change due to the price cut

Of course, as soon as the price goes back up, it'll drop back down. I guess all it took was a 70 pound price drop (which is what, 100+, along with a free bundled game). Pretty crazy that this is what they have to do.

yep... thats what happens when you drop the price by >$220 from original (80 GBP drop for console price + 50 GBP game).

I imagine if they start selling same bundle for $400 in US, XB1 would sell a lot better too.

What happens if sony drops the price to 350? What will MS do? Drop another 50? They keep dropping it.

Then MS goes back to square one. Sony said they built the PS4 with quick price cuts in mind, so if the X1 goes down to $399 and starts selling well, Sony might just drop the price a bit themselves. They'll have price advantage for this whole gen, much like MS did last time (unless they drop Kinect).

sorry if it does not fit here..

CV AWARDS 2014: Sony sweeps the board

PlayStation dominated the MCV Awards 2014, collecting eight prizes including the prestigious Grand Prix.

Sony was hailed for its launch of PS4, The Last of Us and its push of the PlayStation Network at retail. It also won Digital Strategy, UK Sales Team, Marketing Team, Events Team, PR Team and Trade Marketing Team.

Sooo...FIFA to remain in the top spot?

I think we'll see a small bump for PS4 software, noticed quite a few PS4s in the wild over the weekend, not to mention a few Argos' moving out their clearance stock.

Yup, looks like Graphic was right on the money. TF retook the top spot.

And wow at the 360 version...

https://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110032

Goddamn. Didn't expect it to come in at number 1. X1 position still holding strong at no.2.
I wow'd at 6 of the top 10 being 360 titles. That machine has some serious software selling strength. Still.

7 titles apiece for the two next gen consoles.

Nintendo banished from the charts entirely.

Top 10 dominated by MS :O

TF (Xbox One) has great legs. The bundling helps, I guess. But it's still impressive.

Infamous on the other hand...

Whaaaat? 360 install base is massive here, people will have been waiting for this for weeks. I know loads of people without next gen console that just arnt ready to jump in yet and bought tf 360 and loving it.

Nothing! I said nothing!
The charts are up on the GFK site.

Football Manager (Vita, presumably) is in at 18. Hmmm.

The fact it will be out of date soon with no update put me off or I might have bought it.

TF is popular but it does seem there is demand for the XB1 at PS4 pricing.
