Marty O'Donnell Fired By Bungie

If it was for financial or budgeting concerns, this is absolute bullshit. Spend less dollars on Mountain Dew marketing campaigns and put that money into the quality of the game.

If it was for reasons unbeknownst to us in that he did something highly inappropriate within the studio, then I guess I could accept this.

The problem is, we'll never know.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
Marty's soundtracks were an integral part into making Halo what it is today. If he made Destiny's and then Bungie fired him, I hope Activision burns them all.

Its not like they will be deleting all the music that has been made.

If Marty isn't going to be paid for what he did, I'm not going to pay them.

Makes sense to me. Guy makes halo music and nothing much else, everything just sounds the same...great if you're making a halo game. Not so great if you're making a game called destiny.

It's pretty incredible the turnover rate those who work in the industry deal with. I can't imagine having to be finding new jobs every few years.

They fired him on a Friday, and now we're just hearing about this?

I guess you could say Marty hinted that he was leaving Bungie on the 12. He made a thread on his group at Bungie.net saying
Hey everyone, I think the time has come for this group to go away. It's been a great run, but it doesn't seem to serve any purpose now.

To really stay in touch with me, go here: https://twitter.com/MartyTheElder

So long,

Marty
but I would have never guessed that he was leaving Bungie.

Where is the indication that he is not getting paid? He got a wage for doing his job right?

You just don't get it...

Probably not. All this crazy rage over someone loosing their job is weird. He will land on his feet but this won't impact the quality of Destiny at all.

Why's that? What if his work is completely done for it already? Still looks like a damn fun game to me.

The combination of Bungie showing recycled footage, favoring the PS4, and posting pretentious updates all while being bombarded by people hyping it up to be "the next big thing" when it looks like Reach with ADS has slowly chipped away at my optimism. Marty and Joe leaving broke the camel's back.

F you 343 I already hated Halo 4 now you take away the man who made arguable the most iconic shooter music of this generation (out of all Western FPS'). Wow I remember playing with him on Bungie day too. Sucks =(

I think you got some things mixed up there.

Marty worked for Bungie, who no longer makes Halo. Bungie fired Marty.

I hope this gets clarified very soon because some of the possible reasons being suggested in this thread sound downright fucking insane. Good luck, Marty.

OMG read before you post. He got fired from Bungie NOT 343.

Marty didn't even work on Halo 4.

The fact that Staten and now O'Donnell have departed Bungie might indicate to some that the company is moving in a direction that isn't all too agreeable with its longtime fans. It's less worrying about the soundtrack of the next Destiny but more wondering where the company's culture is headed.

I dont want to associate with people who throw away those who helped make them what they are.

Here's the list of Bungie's Board of Directors, recent as of last October.

TL;DR

Harold Ryan
Jason Jones
Jonty Barnes
Chris Butcher
Brent Abrahamsen
Charlie Gough
David Dunn
Zach Russell

I guess the transition for some companies can be hard on the fans. Since Destiny is their project for the next 10+ years, I guess they have to keep focused on the direction they want to go.

Fair enough. Personally I don't mind because Marty is hardly going to be left destitute and on the streets is he. He will get a new job in no time and be making awesome music for someone else.

Royalties fights are in way another level than marketing budgets concerns.

It isn't just Marty who left... Tons of other high profile Bungie Employees have left since after Reach.

Joe Staten, Marty, Marcus Lehto, Robt Mclees to name a few.

Yeah, so why wouldn't I just buy their games instead?

Aaand now I'm freaking out a little, this is the end of an era. Love his music, still listening to it ten years on. Will be super interesting to see where he ends up.

Thats crazy as fuck, he was one of the legends there, I didn't think Bungie had it's own board of directors, did this happen when Bungie split from Microsoft?....hard to believe a man who spent most of his career creating some of the best music in videogames for an underdog company would get booted out due to some bureaucratic bullshit involving people who probably weren't there since the beginning.

Halo 2? I don't agree. A number of tracks were borrowed from CE yes, but to put Halo 2 and 3 in the same box as "mostly derivative works" is an exaggeration.

A large percentage, if not most of the music in Halo 2 is original material (in the Halo franchise itself!). I am thinking of tracks like In Amber Clad, Unyielding, or most of the level suites. The music in New Mombasa or High Charity, for example, is nothing like anything I remember listening to while playing CE.

On the other hand, most of the music in Halo 3 is a derivative of Halo 2 and CE tracks.

In Amber Clad is a variation on Under Cover of Night, Unyielding plays off Rock Anthem For Saving The World, and High Charity ends with a retool of the Leela theme from Marathon.

Being derivative doesn't mean it's a 1-to-1 direct remaster with a fresh coat of orchestral paint. It's some subtle stuff, for sure, but Marty's been largely riding on his original themes for a long time now.

EDIT: I'm not really worried about Destiny's music for the same reason. As long as they have legal rights to the themes, it won't be too difficult to get another composer to create variations for future titles just like Marty did with Halo.

Either people get too old and jaded for the position, or they don't like the direction things went in. Plenty of reasons for leaving but this is not the death of Bungie. Wait till Destiny comes out and see how things pan out. At least they are in better shape than id.

Insane news to wake up.
Of course this was not done without cause and significant deliberation, but.. firing Marty?

The man has been a core component for so long, his music is the very air in the some of their titles.

Bummer, and hard to not to look at things with some cynicism and a bit of fear now.

There is no way the music for the game hasn't been done by now. I doubt they are taking away all of his and McCartney's compositions and rushing to create new music in time for release.

Wish the best for this guy, with such a great resume he shouldn't be too hard pressed to find a willing employer.

Thanks! Don't know why other sites only list Jones. Weird.

This thread is full of more "games industry is special" when really this is just a case of an employee getting fired for whatever reason that will probably remain confidential. It's pointed out every time, but people get fired ALL THE TIME for myriad reasons.

Myth didn't really sound like Halo.

While this is true, it was also a long time ago. He found the halo sound and now he seems to be stuck with it. I was actually put off by how much destiny sounded like halo, personally. But i assume he finished his work for the first game so i'm going to have to wait for destiny 2 before that series finds it's own identity music wise. Hopefully this move sets them on track to differentiate themselves from halo a little more.

Comparing Bungie to id :/

I think you are missing the point. Sure Destiny 1 may still have the influence of these people but what about Bungie's future titles?

Bungie isn't who it once was. This is a serious blow.
