Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 7: How Can My Smash Brother Be This Cut

Luigi might be a starter this time since he has so much appeal to the franchise. It wouldn't be the first time something like that happened. Ness went from being the final super secret unlockable character in Smash64 to being a Starter in Melee and then back to unlockable in Brawl..
Didn't Sakurai say that the exception for his early reveal was because it was the year of Luigi though? That makes me think he's still unlockable.

He only said that he usually doesn't reveal Luigi until release, not that Luigi's the only unlockable character being shown pre-release (besides Sonic and Mega Man, obviously).

This might just be wishful thinking, but I think everything we've been shown is just the starting roster. In the Brawl dojo the secret characters weren't directly revealed unless you clicked on the page to 'agree' to see it in a way. And in Melee I don't believe the secret characters were revealed until after launch.

They revealed the third party characters without spoilers in Brawl's site (and also before launch) in spite of them being unlockables. The others only started being revealed, even with the spoiler boxes, after the Japanese launch though.

Didn't Sakurai say that the exception for his early reveal was because it was the year of Luigi though? That makes me think he's still unlockable.

Well, here's Sakurai's quote:

A REAL pic of the day--Luigi joins the battle! In prior games, we've never introduced Luigi before release, but why not? This is the 'Year of Luigi,' after all.

I don't think that really confirms either way. Sakurai references only how Luigi was never revealed before release, not his status as an unlockable character. Still, with a character like Toon Link also revealed before launch, I don't see why Luigi would have to remain as an unlockable. I guess it'd happen only if the unlockable line up is like Brawl's, and most unlockables are just veterans.

If you want to talk about what Sakurai says, always use his Japanese posts since they are likely to be directly from him.

ホントのきょうの一枚。ルイージ参戦! ルイージが発売前に公開されることはいままでなかったのだけど、せっかくの"ルイージの年"なので。
You would want someone to translate that.

Either way, it is likely that the English Miiverse post says the same thing.

Everytime a fake roster is shot down in mere seconds the Palutena leak becomes more real. It's been about three months right now.

My interpretation:

"The real pic of the day. Luigi joins the battle! Luigi's never been revealed prerelease before, but since it is the "Year of Luigi" [we made an exception]. "

I wouldn't mind if everyone announced up till now was just playable from the start, after all we already know they're in, no reason to make them unlockables.

Also, I'll ask this, since I wasn't here for Melee and Brawl launches: I guess that launch day will be filled to the brim with fakes of every possible character making it in as an unlockable, right?

I remember Ridley's SSE intro being shown as him as a playable character. There'll probably be a lot of that stuff going around.

If I ever find out who did that I will find him, flay him alive and use his skin for pork rinds. And then I will tape myself licking the pork rinds to send to his next of kin.

Wait...how did I play ~1000hrs of Melee without knowing Bonus match exists o_O

To be fair almost nobody plays it.

Well, I played through Brawl for years without knowing Manaphy and heart swap were a thing.

I got it once... in WELL over 1000hrs of playing Brawl. Always with items on...I wonder what the probability of Manaphy spawning is. Must be far below 1%

The real reason Luigi was revealed early was because he's a free source of screenshot comedy.

So, like a xenomorph.

Basically! They're always more menacing when they're crawling around too, and there's no way Ridley's tail lashes from Super onwards weren't inspired by the alien queen.

I don't get guys who think Ridley is a cloud or some sort of balloon that can only fly or only likes to fly. In every 3D Metroid Ridley has landed for some ground combat, especially in Other M.

Still I mean look at the way Charizard was depicted in the latest cgi portions of the trailer, he's flying all over the place. He certainly doesn't have that kind of freedom of flight in a Smash setting and guess what? No one ever complained or thought it was weird. We just accept it as part of the rules.

And he looks goofy as fuck every time it happens, especially in Other M where he's lumbering around like he's angling for a spot in the next Donkey Kong game. Meta Ridley in particular is only ever grounded because he gets his wings burnt off.

Charizard's flying typing is so secondary to the design that it couldn't learn a single move to take advantage of it in R/B, a situation which hasn't improved much almost twenty years later. It's a character that can fly, but certainly isn't defined by it.

Played a bunch of Brawl tonight with a friend.

Played as Dedede and Wolf seriously for the first time ever. I love both characters now.

Dedede's hammer is beastly and oh so satisfying, and comboing with Wolf's up and side specials is fun as hell.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
I thought Wolf's Up B is shit and should be replaced immediately. His Side B is awesome though.

Speaking of Wolf, for a guy who's supposedly near last in development and reuses some of Fox's assets, he sure has a very dynamic idle and active animations.

Akibastman is back to number 1 for prediction contest, however he have a contender up there with him which is Ryce.

There are bunch of people that got Pokemon X/Y but they decided to put up Impa instead of Sheik or lack of Charizard.

Anyway, I will clarifying the rules with people who are concerned;

People still get a point for Charizard if they had Pokemon Trainer/Charizard/Pokemon Trainer's Charizard on their list.

If people put transformation in their list for Sheik and Zero Suit Samus, don't fret. You still get the points for predicting those characters to be in the game

I got Manaphy like over 18 times by now since I had couple of sessions with neogaffers a month ago, so we got manaphy like three times in a week.

What Black Magic did you use? o_O

Just read up on the topic a bit - the COMBINED chance of Manaphy, Mew, Celebi and Jirachi appearing is 1/493 or 0.2%, putting the chance for one particular of them at a staggering 1/1972 or 0.05%. How the fuck did you manage to encounter it three times in a single week o_O

....really? When I used to play they appeared constantly. Ok, manaphy not so much, he has the best effect for 4 player battles xD

That encounter rate always bugged me. Mew, Celebi, and jirachi are rare but I encountered them fairly often. Manaphy tho...

I've not been very active here for the past two days.

Have I missed anything?

We got a fake new Character Select Screen. Beyond that? Probably nothing too exciting

So I had two dreams last night, one was unrelated to Smash and the other was when I was half asleep/half awake and I honestly thought it was real for a bit.

Again I reiterate THIS IS A DREAM do not take this as a leak or prediction it's just something that happened while I was asleep.

Sakurai announced out of nowhere what he called a "Smash mini direct" and it aired last night, the first part of the trailer was focused on Ridley as a boss and the boss mode in general. First he showed off Ridley on pyrosphere showing all his classic iconic moves saying "Ridley is such an iconic boss that we felt trying to make him proportionally sized would cause him to lose some of his intimidation factor hence the creation of bosses". Ridley like other bosses when he dies explodes and becomes an attack for the other players. Sakurai also explained that any stage with a boss also has a no boss mode for players who wish to focus just on fighting each other.

Sakurai then made his big reveal of Final Destination's boss stage, where any boss in the game could show up along with some classic bosses from previous Smash Bros game showing off Master and Crazy Hand, Taboo, and Duon. He then said to please stay tuned for further boss announcements teasing a pirate ship level with the shadow of a crown flying by implying King K Rool would be a boss.

He then went on to show off a newcomer trailer for Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong who are actually two separate newcomers both confirmed at the same time. Sakurai explained that he original planned to make them a team like Ice Climbers, but felt that they were so unique they made more sense separate. Dixie Kong used her hair like a whip and was shown being very agile in the air, while Kiddy was shown as a slow power house who couldn't jump well but hit like a truck.

---

That was pretty much it, at this point I woke up confused and had to double check what I dreamed had not in fact been real lol, if any of the above happens it's just a coincidence. Just needed to share as I'm in full on Smash hype mode and I can't get it out of my head lol

Maybe I had a highest luck with rarity. I always asked for Manaphy because my friend loathe it so much.

I got good amount of other legendary cuties, so I guess you need to play with me so you can see it for yourself.

Well, that's shocking, since my old roster is embarrassing and implausible.

So most of our lists are. Most of people got rid of Lucario, Toon Link, Sheik, PokeTrainer or. Zero Suit Samus.

I think we already have a good idea of what the character select looks like. It's probably similar to how it the site looks currently.

The character select screen's art style has to match the My Music UI. Here's My Music for reference:

EDIT: Oh, has anyone noticed that Y sets a "Default" track for the stage? And there's an indicator of the number of tracks on a stage on the top right.

I would guess Default actually just moves the likeliness bars back to their original positions but I could be wrong.

Considering there's no default marking on the track list, I'm assuming it just resets the song rarity to what it was before you start messing with it.

I still don't get the problem. He looks weird but still doesn't change the fact that he can and does get on the ground to attack. Besides that's the usual gimmick people associate with a playable Ridley, awkward on the ground and amazing in the air.

I wouldn't care how how he was depicted though, just as long as he got it in. He was certainly inspired by Xenomorphs and if he moved like them great.

Of course I did, I was basing the comments only on the character's portraits :(

Well, apparently the character portraits of the yet unrevealed characters are from various renders of their older games or taken straight from SSBB DOJO.

In the end it's a beautiful design, but the "leak" itself is pretty poorly made.

The design isn't that great either. The selection markers are way too small, and it's annoying how "Ready to fight" cuts off characters.

Really, the best thing about it is how character portraits are displayed, and that's taken from the website. It's not a great design.
