PS4 1.70 goes live on April 30th

Woohoo!

Can't wait to upload my video captures, throw them into my Camstudio and properly upload them at max quality.

I hope someday Sony puts in 1080p uncompressed screen capture ability as well as native video capture.

Good to know that the update coming VERY Soon

Personally, I want less button prompts to do things. It takes way too many button presses to create a party and then even more unnecessary presses to invite someone. When the join party icon pops up, I should be able to hold the button down and then it will automatically join the party for me without having to go to the party screen.

Sony has always liked their unnecessary confirmations. I doubt they will fix that.

With the option to disable HDCP in the upcoming firmware update, how would you rate the purchase of the Elgato HD Game Capture device for recording gameplay videos off of PS4?
Highly recommended. I already use the Elgato with my PS4 and it is a great capture device.

If you're wondering how, I use an HDMI splitter to remove the HDCP manually. I won't need to anymore once they remove HDCP for games in this update.

Hey thank you for your response. Will definitely get Elgato in the near future!

Does the Elgato take screenshots pre-compression? Even if so, I'm guessing it's only 4:2:2 like most of the 'affordable' capture devices.

I think the fact that each feature has to be made from scratch means it will take sometime to get all of the things we are requesting.

Yes, this. People seem to think it's just a matter of Sony flipping a switch to turn on the features that were on PS3. It took quite a while for PS3 to get a lot of these things and it will take some time for them to build them up on the PS4. Sony has sold this all along as a pure gaming machine with heavy social integration and so far most of their updates are focused on exactly that. I want DLNA and video/photo/music playback as much as the rest but I have no doubt these things will come in time. I'm very happy with what they've done so far.

i'm actually most hyped for the updates to streaming. i.e. archiving, 720p hd (although my uploads aren't even good enough for this), improvements to chat, etc.

that makes sense for stuff like DLNA...but does that excuse really work for stuff like friend notifications and better sorting and organization of the dmb?

The friend notifications was a victim of the 2000 person friend lists. In order to put it back in, they've probably realized they're going to have to have a way of filtering it, either by groups or manually selecting each friend.

The sorting of games on the dmb is a mess, and I'm not sure why it's like that. I think part of it is a simple marketing thing, so that no matter what people show of the main interface of the PS4, it's always going to be some big, easy to see icons of games that are actually on the system. But it's far enough past launch some folders probably wouldn't kill the message. The tiered, randomly sorted video apps bugs me too, but that's definitely a marketing thing with the video providers.

Please confirm the ability to turn of the LED in this update, please. Dimming is fine as long as they'll allow me to decide how I want to dim it, not some presets.

Sony tip: To dim the controller light, simply turn up your house lighting or play on a bright sunny day with the curtains open.

Quite, it's bad enough with a hundred people in your friends list for notifications. It's going to be pinging all the time with 2000. I think at best we'll get the group option, or the opportunity to flag certain friends to 'tell me when they're online', like you said.

Broadcasting

- Ability to live-stream via Niconico (likely Japan-only).
- Ability to view Niconico broadcasts via Live from PlayStation application.
- A PlayStation App update released together with the system update will add the ability to view Niconico broadcasts from within the application.
- Broadcast from Twitch and Ustream in the highest quality.
- Archive your broadcasts via broadcaster’s online service.

ShareFactory

- A download icon for ShareFactory, a new PlayStation 4 application that lets you edit comments, stickers, music, and scenery into your recorded videos, will be added to the Home screen. To use it, you’ll need to download and install it.

Settings

- Ability to turn HDCP off in order to record game footage via HDMI.

PlayStation Store

- Ability to pre-order games on the PlayStation 4 store.
- Pre-ordered content can be automatically downloaded to the PlayStation 4. When you pre-order, a countdown will be displayed until the release date, then automatically download so you can play it once it’s available.

Remote Play

- Ability to remote play PlayStation 4 from PS Vita TV (PS Vita TV update also required).
- A pass code will no longer be needed to pair the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita / PS Vita TV if the PlayStation 4 is in standby mode, or if the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita are both connected online, and the same user is signed in to both.

I didn't found anything about the dimming of the controller light.

Argh why no update to allow watching Ustream and Twitch within the Playstation App? I don't like that when I click the play button on a stream within the Playstation App it opens up the Twitch or Ustream app.

They make it look like you could watch it within the PS app itself by having a screen cap of the stream with a play button over it.

The pre-loading with a countdown timer till release is pretty slick. I like that.

Reasons to buy retail are quickly dying away. One day we will be able to 3D print the cover if we want to get that " physical ownership " feel.

The other day it took 30 minutes to find out where my wife had put Second Son, and the whole time I just thought " wouldn't have this problem if I had just downloaded the damned thing " lol

Yeah, but there's A FUCKING COUNTDOWN CLOCK FOR RELEASE DAY!

Sony are watching.

You should really call your boy by his name, even if he is the youngest (and don't ever let him hear you saying 'I wish I'd downloaded him!')

This seems so strange to me considering the population base in NA and Europe is much much larger than JP (I know it's been out longer but even those media create sales trends look bleak) Why hasn't Sony moved the firmware team to the west and catered more to the tastes of their larger pool of players. Youtube support priority instead of niconico for one.

because sony gonna be sony. they have changed a lot in the fact of input on what should go next, listening to NA/ EU (more NA) and overall just making sure its under a huge umbrella. but everything gets pushed buy scei. explains why the date was announced in japan first.
