Yup, perhaps. We'll find out in the next few weeks/months, I guess. :)
What happened with Ghosts?

Cod/Activision kicked off resolutiongate and quite openly as well. Not the UbiSoft-ish "they look the same to me" but "yeah it's 720p vs 1080p".

I am a bit wary as to how well Sledgehammer can make a COD. I do believe that they did most of the work on MW3, though I don't know if that was multiplayer or single player and the design by committee approach the game had was the big killer.

Treyarch produces great games, I hope that Sledgehammer can do so as well.

I've noticed in several threads that you have a "thing" for skin. If you can, without derailing the thread, explain why?

BOT: Game looks interesting so far.

It makes characters look much better. Along with low resolution textures, people that look like concrete were one of my biggest visual complaints last gen.

As an example:

NoScattering.jpg
DefaultScattering.jpg

UFC and CoD are two of the only games that don't use the technique present in image 2, and it's what gives them that chalky/concrete like look, which is distracting when everything else looks good.

The models Activision showed off at GDC actually used this technique, but they were showing off eye shading (which looks present in CoD), not skin shading. The skin shading was just there so the overall result looked better.

By comparison this is how CoD guy looks up close:

cod-sledgehammer-ignpng-a29997_610w.jpg

Subsurface scattering also improves foliage, but that is less distracting in my opinion.

Or, in a comparable 60 fps game, Irish in Battlefield 4:

The significance of Acti showing COD first at a PlayStation even cannot be overstated.

Other than the very first game (PS) call of duty is an "XBOX" brand for all intents and purposes....it is also available for PlayStation but if Acti is gonna release DLC first of PS4 and or do like how Ubi are co-marketing Watch_Dogs/AssCreed or like they themselves are marketing Destiny, MS will lose MASSIVE mindshare to PS4 very quickly

DPS is a sales meeting which just happens to be hosted by Sony. The business meetings that take place between publishers and retailers cover entire publisher slates.

The only real Sony exclusive thing at DPS is the welcome presentation, where Sony talks latest sales figures and shows off a few games.

But neither publishers nor retailers consider DPS a "Sony event". It's a sales event hosted by Sony. Don't read that much into it.

I still can't believe Activision already abandoning last-gen. Guess we'll find out soon. Kudos to them if true.

It's "next-gen first" according to Activision's last fiscal call, which implies 360/PS3 versions exist but are considered a secondary priority.

Isn't this the rumor? The Sledgehammer CoD is built for the new systems, while last gen systems are getting a pared down version.

I would be shocked if Activision did not take the "Titanfall" approach to this. I expect it to be designed on "next-gen" (current-gen) hardware, and then ported down to 360/PS3.

It's actually called Blacksmith??

Anyways, it does look good. I think I'm going to pass on both CoD and Battlefield this year but I wouldn't he surprised if I ended picking up this game.

I am assuming the GI is trolling the clusterfuck from yesterday lol

As long as the MP is different from Ghosts I'll give it a go. I didn't enjoy Ghosts MP as much.

Absolutely agree. Couldn't put my finger on it, but it was the first CoD ("modern" era, since 4) that just didn't feel right. There was something about it that played different, and it just was not enjoyable.

Almost certainly using Activision's next-gen facial rendering tech they previewed at GDC 2013

Sorry, but you're wrong. It looks nowhere near as good.
The skin uses a very simple shader without subsurface scattering, giving faces a particularly waxy look.
And don't even get me started on the eye shader, the eyes look completely flat.
Edit: The eyes in the new shot look much better
compare (CoD 2014)

to (next-gen facial rendering tech)

When it comes to skin/eye shaders, CoD is outclassed by other current gen offerings.
This could still change until release, of course.

I would not be surprised at all if that's the ad they'll show before the game comes out.

A certain someone claimed that the brand would be switching over to PS this time around. I still find it very hard to believe that MS would let the co-marketing slip. While CoD may not be as popular as it once was, it's still by far the most popular FPS series around.

Yes, I am 99% sure MS will move HEAVEN AND EARTH to prevent this from happening...

AssCreed/WD and Destiny is one thing, but outside of Microsoft IPs like Halo and Gears, Coller Doodie is the CROWN JEWEL of Xbox selling games and *for sure* the #1 3rd party franchise on a platform that depends on those 3rd party games most of all.....

If MS allows Sony to wrap up COD co-marketing deals and/or drop DLC timed exclusivity from X1, they are not taking next gen seriously enough, IMO...

Seeing how they are losing the next gen sales war big time right now, this idea is almost unthinkable in my eyes.......

A certain someone? If you are going to talk about these kind of *drastic* changes, at least include some form of a source.

EDIT I think I remember the rumour you are talking about. Wasn't that purely about the announcement of the lead platform? In other words, marketing is still at Microsoft - but to support Sony, they'll announce PS4 as lead platform?

If it happens, I think MS and EA's deal combined with how much Sony has promoted Destiny will be major factors.

While I agree this looks good for CoD...it's not impressing more than the characters models we've already seen in some games.

The skin and the texture on the face looks a bit funky (too bumpmapped/lo-res)...as do the teeth.

Compared to previous CoD games though.....looks good.

Why are these soldiers wearing exoskeletons if they're not carrying tons of gear on their backs?
Not sure if serious? Increase speed, movement and strength. Not just for carrying equipment and rations.
Hey look that steel beam is blocking our way. Well then, move that mofo.
Looks damn good. May 4th bring the love.

Visually it looks fantastic, hopefully I'll be blown away and hyped when the trailer hits. I couldn't get excited for Ghosts.

PMCs and cybernetics? Duty Gear Rising Revengeance sounds a lot more interesting than Ghosts, that's for sure.

Also, I admit that I'm a sucker for anything resembling a close helmet.

Great post. SSS is extremely important for next gen.

So I'm assuming the whole "Blacksmith" subtitle is just their version of Blackwater. It only makes sense with all of the PMC linking in that reveal page, and directly to an article about Blackwater.

No matter how good it looks if its the same ol run and gun gameplay I will pass. I really wish they would make it a more strategic game (think rainbow six vegas) where you could actually take cover. Having been in the military for 9+ years the idea of running blindly into an open area with multiple people shooting is a bit laughable.

I see some poly edges here and there but the texture work and the overall image quality is simply amazing, right on par with Killzone.

Cannot wait for the reveal trailer.

The poly edges, lack of subsurface scattering, and some of thee old style normal mapping makes it seem pretty clear how they're going to hit 60fps. I think it looks pretty good but looking closely it now doesn't seem impossible to hit that target at this level of fidelity, just with less AA than a magazine shot.

That helmet's very 'modern knight'-ish.

That was Destiny's schtick.

Let's get some BF4 on PS4 images up in here for comparison. That's a 60fps game too, and I'm thinking that looks way better.

As long as it is anything other than Modern Day military warfare, I'm probably in. I would lurve it to go back to WWI or WWII though.

So looks great ( shock) and I am sure the trailer will deliver visuals that will best BF4.. Let's just hope gameplay moves forward as such!!

Consider me ... Enticed!

That picture looks more like Dead Space to me than COD. But then again Glen Schofield is directing the game right? Makes sense.

I'm half expecting some kind of necromorphs to be jumping out of a COD game after what they did to Ghosts (Aliens, Freedy, Jason, Predator, etc).
