IGN Rumor: Nintendo Revealing New Hardware at E3 [Up: MCV + Videogamer]

Not sure if they would unveil that at E3 though. Seems like the kind of location and time that would lead to immidiate backlash and mocking.

That's a good point, but at this moment the only media outlets that pay attention to Nintendo are gaming oriented.

I think if they didn't do this at E3, they would be mocked anyway for "abandoning" gaming.

3DSi, built from the ground up with NNIDs and Miiverse completely integrated into the OS. Friend Codes gone forever. Faster CPU and more RAM, which can be used by 3DSi-enhanced games. Better cameras. Second analogue slider, and two extra shoulder buttons, which together act as a Circle Pad Pro in supported games. Can be used as a Wii U controller.

Don't want. DSi was almost entirely pointless. Give me a new machine with reasonable resolution and 3DSXl size screen - just one touch screen is fine, don't need two, don't need 3D. And two sticks.

Basically a Nintendo version of a vita but no rear touch

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
What would Nintendo Devs do with that much power? They are still learning last gen tech and haven't topped PS3's best games. Console power isnt their problem. It's now developer talent that they lack, at least on the graphics front.
I wish more developers lacked that much talent.

To be quite honest: I am not interested in new hardware from Nintendo. The wii and wiiu left a sour taste in my mouth (purely hardware-wise speaking). Its all about the games right? Some new qol hardware which will presumably detract form theire classic games-enabled hardware; I'm not in terested in that either, be it from nintendo or not.

A revised Wii U model seems most likely. Smaller, higher storage capacity, cheaper? $249, reduced GamePad size, better battery in GamePad. Something like that.

Why would Nintendo release a smaller, cheaper, better Wii-U when they still have millions of dollars worth of unsold inventory of the original model, and are losing money on every unit sold!?

In my view, if it exists, at most, it'll be the QoL platform (unlikely at E3, in my view) or a revision of the Wii U (new, cheaper, GamePad to allow for lower RRP) or 3DS (DSi style).

It will absolutely not be a new console, or a new handheld. It's completely obvious that it won't be and ridiculous to assume it would be either of them.

I've already seen this rumour dissuade a few people from getting a Wii U with Mario Kart, instead deciding to "hold off". Hate how toxic rumours can be.

Obviously I'd love for this to be a brand new machine, but I am sure this will be some peripheral thing I will have no interest in.

Reasons? It's not like all 3rd parties are having a blast developing games for the WiiU and public aware about the system is minimal. (And I'm talking about the public not the dedicated fanbase that popullate the forums)

The last company to dump expensive platforms that performed poorly in favor of new stuff was Sega, and it was a primary contributor to their "death." The people who dropped $300+ on Wii U hardware in the past year and a half are going to be pretty pissed if Nintendo tells them that they have to spend another $300+ this fall (or even next fall) in order to keep playing Nintendo console games.

I think what you're referring to is in the pipeline, but probably won't be released until late 2015/2016. The 3DS still has some legs on it. (Smash, New Pokemon, and perhaps F-Zero or whatever other games Nintendo has under their sleeves.)

I feel like relying on stuff like cross buy and a "portable console experience" is exactly why the Vita has done so much worse than the 3DS

I wasn't saying it would "rely" on it. The Vita relies on it now precisely because there are so few other big releases. Cross-buy is a super fantastic feature, and Nintendo devices seem perfect for adopting it, but I wasn't claiming it's the key feature. Obviously the games are the first and foremost concern. (Edit: The hardware is key for me too though as the 3DS actively causes me pain while playing, and the hardware feels VERY underpowered at this point, even if the games are still solid.)

They have to reveal it somewhere that gets mainstream attention. I think people are buying too much into the "separate from gaming division" speak. It's gonna be software. As our resident Nintendo expert, Shikamaru Ninja, has stated, it's a platform for their "Touch Generation" software to continue on. E3 is still a great place to generate hype for this type of product.

It won't be a new home console. I mean, who the fuck would risk buying it if Nintendo might drop it after a year and a half?

I don't really believe the rumor itself but few people here made me think of old rumors of Luigi Mansion 2 and Kid Icarus Uprising for Wii U. What if they were for something else.

E3 is only a week after Mario Kart Launches. I don't think it's a terrible idea to wait and see what Nintendo has in store for the rest of the year.

Honestly I hope the Wii U gets some legs, I probably can't get one until my birthday in Jan.

It seems that comparing it to phones, which people have grown accustomed to replacing every 2 years, would show that people are OK with more frequent upgrades of hardware.

I don't know who these people are that replace phones every 2 years, I've been using mine for about 5 now.

Of course, some companies buy/subsidize smartphones for their employees; as soon as I find a local company that does this for game consoles I'll send them my resume!

You really shouldn't write off rumours like this completely. Remember how people thought it'd be absurd for Nintendo to drop 3D? And guess what, 2DS appears! Don't underestimate Nintendo in terms of doing silly things.
