Mario Charts needs to become a meme. Nonsensical pie charts and line charts making no sense about how video games are doing.

So, we are salty now. Oh the irony

Edit: oh damn, beaten

While I'm in no way inclined to side with these folks, "Take things with a grain of salt" means "Maintain healthy scepticism" not "People are salty"

This is a lot like those hollywood flop-chaser articles that just constantly paint a movie as a flop before it comes out because people really like to click schadenfreude articles.

They're not wrong, but it's also like... okay?

EDIT: holy fuck that chart.

I'm not kidding guys, I have NO idea how to make this graph in Business Object/Jaspersoft/heck even Excel without making something so vile I end up puking on myself.

But this? I'd hang myself if I was ever caught doing something like that then again I take pride in my work....

My most important take away is that a not insignificant portion of GAF doesn't understand what is wrong with that pie chart, especially considering half of these fake pie charts are missing the point of what he did wrong.
I don't think those joke charts were meant to draw a parallel to the Polygon chart but rather serve as examples of a bad chart.

Wait that "MK sales relative to playform" chart is supposed to look like an actual Mario Kart, right? I thought it was a joke when I saw it on Twitter.

Needs wheels adding to it, stat.

So lets get this straight. Ben Kuchera, who cries about the accuracy of NPD and thinks we should stop paying attention to them, feels it is totally fine to allow this article to be published? An article based on chartzzzz numbers? Oh irony, thy name is Kuchera.

Thats Polygon for you.

$200? Where? Ebay? Sorry, I'm not giving that scam site any more of my money than I already have. Tell me when I can walk into a Gamestop or Best Buy and buy a Wii U for under $200 and maybe I'll reconsider.
I mean if you're looking for new, it'll be kind of hard looking for a $200 price point. But Nintendo's own webstore is selling the refurbished 32GB deluxe with Nintendo Land for $200. So there is that if you're fine with refurbished. Of course I understand if you only want stuff brand spankin new like I do.

You should work at Polygon. Gross incompetence gets you an editor position.

If this is an insult...
But seriously no, never.
I didn't go to college to suck at my job.

Time for a classic to return:

That chart makes better sense than the one provided by Polygon!
They're that good that they managed to beat this!
Now when we'll talk about shitty graph this graph won't be the reference anymore!

How can someone even present that crap, If I showed it in a presentation I'm sure the panel would laugh. How is it even possible to make such a terrible graph. Even the majority of amateur graphs are better than that.

I thought I was just crescente and their whole pitch was to be the opposite of the, kotaku-Internet-clicks, type of stuff. I don't really know I hardly look at these sites unless someone sends me a link asking what I think about it and then I proceed to hate read everything on the front page.

All I need is neogaf for game news it usually shows up here first, discussion is encouraged and it's help me train my brain to detect rumor garbage.

I really don't understand the point of Internet news sites when you can sign up for the same information these people at these websites get.

Where are you getting that information?

Nintendo sales as whole. They have always had long sales. DS/Wii/3DS pretty much prove it. I mean Mario Kart Wii sold over 1 million last fiscal year, that's insane for a game that game out in 2008.

I'm not sure what I will do with myself now. At least I can still read the articles they spend an insane amount of time researching.

The sexism comment I made was on a review (I forget which game) that they made a stink about some minor sexism in. I agree that sexism is wrong, but Polygon goes overboard with their righteousness at time.

Yeah, I'm pretty anal about that kind of thing. Especially when it comes to touchscreen devices.

I just took a look at Gamestop's website. $329 for the Mario Kart bundle. At that point, I may as well just buy a PS4 or Xbox One. The cheapest bundle I see is for $249 and it's the Skylanders 8GB bundle..

Surely you could just not acknowledge the ban by not pressing that OK button?

What the hell even is that supposed to do?

Sad part is that it's true. Even if grossly incorrect it get it's point across, the analysis that it's trying to show. The Polygon graph is literally nonsense.

You know, for some reason I thought they were calling a user 'lionpants' as some sort of odd insult or pet name.

The amount of bad rumors and misinformation coming out of NeoGAF lately is getting silly. Fun community, but keep your grains of salt handy.

Man, what a weird day to point this out. Any responsible person knows to take everything said as rumor with a grain of salt, particularly on a forum. Sounds like there's a specific reason he's calling out NeoGAF here, but I can't figure out what it is...

Inane clickbait article aside....
What in the blue hell is this?
mario_kart_pie_chart.jpg

What does that even mean?
What are you even comparing?
Somewhere out in the world, someone was paid to make this! He can't be trusted...
A paid editor co-signed with this too, probably just said "I don't see nothing wrong here throw it up!" They can't be trusted either!

I was a games journalist. I know my stuff.
You should have had a ;D at the end. That would've solidified your credibility with me.

That is crazy indeed. I can't believe its still selling that much.

Am I supposed to think that ban was unreasonable after looking at that image you posted?

I'm just here to comment on this.
What the fuck, how the fuck did they manage to make this graph?
Seriously WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
This is the worst graph I've ever seen, it's brillant in how it manage to not say anything relevant and botch the presentation to boot.
I'm not kidding it's horrible, if I ever did this kind of stuffs at my job I'd be fired on the spot for gross incompetence.

Seriously. I know it's been said, but it can not be said enough. What the fuck.

Not only did this "journalist" make it, but other people approved it. It was posted and through out the whole process not one person mentioned that the graph makes zero fucking sense? It's unbelievable.

From Ben's Twitter: "Mario Kart 8 Will Be The Worst Selling Game In Kart History"
Headline title: "Mario Kart 8 likely to be the worst-selling game in its history"
Article body: "If every current Wii U owner bought the next installment, Mario Kart 8, it would still be the second-worst selling game in franchise history."

Well which one is it, make up your mind.

Oh, it's from THAT guy. Well, that explains plenty then. ::switch off::

There's something wrong with a news editor presenting that graph in article I assure you. It's the type of incompetence that gets you fired from any self respecting firm.

Yeah, the news itself is fine, I think. But the graph is so obscure and a bit meaningless to even be shown in that context.

And I should buy a Wii U just to play a handful of 1st party games? What? Sorry, but I don't have the kind of disposable income to do that. Had Nintendo put out a competitive system this go-around, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy it over an Xbox One or PS4. Nintendo's own games still destroy their competitors' in the FUN department, and I value that much more than watching the newest Naughty Dogg movie or curb-stomping Locust with a steroid abuser.

Thank you for your answer.

So you are saying you don't care about what Wii U offers so you won't buy one.
I care so i did. So for me the games are not wasted at all, and for you it's clearly a wasted opportunity. A wasted opportunity to play great games.

Take care.

Fired from your job? This shit would get you a letter home from your sixth grade teacher about possibly moving to the special class.

The article itself is just the usual clickbait bullshit you'd see on a slow day, but Jesus Christ that graph.

It's not even news. It's just an assumption, albeit a safe one.

Sixth grade? I remember being tested on graphs in the third grade.

Well, honestly... considering the Wii U isn't doing too hot, that's totally logical. Then again, MK8 might sell some systems.
