Then don't?

I won't, at least, I hope it's not something that's important for the overall game. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably not, if it is I'll certainly be disappointed.

I have zero interest in that stuff.

Custom movesets are probably tied to this. Although, it'll be interesting to see if EVERY character gets a trophy, like Ice Climbers or Wii Fit Trainer

Seems like a good idea to me, it's a great series to use the technology for. I also, like others, believe this was intended for E3 and expect someone (more than one someones) in France to be losing jobs shortly.

Im sure it will work like in Kid Icarus Uprising, you can unlock the trophies ingame, but you can also unlock them with the ar cards/nfc figurines

I am not into figurine collecting at all (too much money + no room where I live) so I am very concerned about where this could end up. If Nintendo makes this a vital aspect of SSB I will not be happy at all.

If I have to spend money on dumb ass figurines for costumes and shit I will just not buy a wii u and stick with project m.

Oh God, my wallet.

Yeah, mine too.
I'm gonna be Pokémon TGC levels of poor :(

How does this make sense?
If you don't wanna pay for costumes (through figurines or otherwise) just don't buy them. You can still play the game itself without cosmetic differences, you know.

Please let it be alternative costumes. I would actually buy such costume-packs, if they come in form of physical statutes.

Considering how they presented the Figures as "Customized personal memory Card Character-based", and how the figures could appeal a younger target than the Smash core fans, I think that this is a good idea to push the figures in-store and in the houses of several customers, even the ones not so interested in them.
I think that they will be optional to the game, and that there will be LE aside the normal one.

So, if you want to play the game normally, you could buy it normally, play it without figures. If you like one of the figurtes, you can buy the "Link edition" of Smash, or the "Mario edition" or the "Charizard edition" of the game. Playing with that character, you can transfer its data and maybe other "stats" to the figures.

Then, in 2015 when they'll release "Pokken" you can use your Charizard figure on the Pad to activate "your" version of Charziard, maybe even with its stats, unlocking from the beginning it's Mega version in-game.

For what? It would suck if some content was locked behind NFC figures.
Well, what if if was DLC-type content that you would've been paying extra for anyway?

This is just Nintendo's way of branching into that figurine market rather than just putting up standard post-release content. From a business perspective it's a pretty good idea.

It honestly makes me wonder how grand their plans are for NFC and what kinds of games will use it. I wonder if something like Mario Kart has also been readied for NFC. Or if there's some big Wii U Pokemon game that will use it.

I would've thought that, much like how Melee and Brawl has more than one way to unlock hidden characters, the NFC figures would be a third way to do it. Sort of like:

TO UNLOCK CAPTAIN FALCON

Beat single player in 8 minutes

- OR -

Play multiplayer for 4 hours

- OR -

Scan your NFC character in

I'd be fine with that. I can carry my Ganondorf figurine everywhere and scan that shit in for guaranteed main in anybody's version. :D

I can already see the future we are headed towards. I will be in the minority for wanting a game's content to actually be on the disc it ships with instead of sold piecemeal with a bunch of plastic I have no use for.

Trying not to overreact...

Uh, I think you already are.

what if...those models sakurai had in the background when discussing the fighters were the NFC figurines?

hmmmm

Slightly Off Topic but I still wait for a Pokémon TGC for Wii U or 3DS that lets you use your own cards via NFC in the game.

It would be so awesome...

Hopefully NFC figures will have some sort of streetpass feature built in. Two NFC figures meet, exchange data, and you can bring in new moves, or custom sets, etc. from the street pass.

Well, shit. I'm glad that I actually am working during this generation. Lord knows I would have wasted my parents' money on the figurines...

what can figurines add to gameplay? honest question.

Nothing. Honest answer.

What it could add to the overall experience is an easy way to keep your character stats when you go play this at other people's houses, but chances are if you have a Wii U, yours is the house where people are going to to play Smash Bros, so pretty pointless unless you have a ton of friends with Wii U's who's houses you go to frequently to play Wii U games. I'm sure these people exist, but I've never met one of them.

Uh, I think you already are.
The thing is, how much does it cost to see all the content in a Skylanders game? I'm not saying Nintendo is Activision but I can't help being a little worried until I see some details assuring me I won't have to pay $200+ to get all the content in the next Smash Bros.
