Mario Kart 8 |OT| 8 oW

if it is £40 in GAME I'll buy it physically (have a preorder, plus 20% extra when trading in some games). If it is £50 in GAME but £40 on the eshop, I'll just buy £40 of vouchers from GAME and download it.
GAME is selling download codes for £40 online. I'm pretty sure that the game is £50 on the eShop. The game page is probably up for you to see.

- The Nintendo staff ghosts for the time trials (which you get stamps for beating) are generally very easy to beat.
Does that mean the devs are scrubs or that they added a couple seconds to their times on purpose to make sure everyone can beat them?

Tommorow, I want to throw a Mario Kart Party and Wii Party U would be an nice addition.

Do you know when Nintendo will send the codes for the free games?

The discount can be argued as a little pointless when the game costs £50 on the eShop and you can buy a download code for £40.

fans who purchase Super Mario Kart until June 30th 2014 can get a discount of £5.49 on Mario Kart 8 if they purchase it on Nintendo eShop from the release of the game until June 30th, 2014, providing the purchase takes place on the same Wii U console.
This is wrong. It has to be same NNID. I asked Nintendo as I thought it was odd (if it didn't buying the £5 code from GAME would also be valid). I'm sure the terms said NNID but those are only on the eShop.

Does that mean the devs are scrubs or that they added a couple seconds to their times on purpose to make sure everyone can beat them?
I thought they used Super Mario Club for the ghosts so a whole range of skill levels can be pooled from and they pick a more average one for the normal ghost then a better player for the expert one (if it is like older games these require you to beat the normal one by several seconds to unlock).

Played this for about 5 hours yesterday. The game is amazing. The new tracks are incredibly well designed. I haven't liked a Mario Kart game since Double Dash and this game feels more like the earlier MK's. I played regional online and there were already a decent amount of Americans with the game. Lots of fun!

Good impressions.

A bit disappointed to hear about the red/blue shell issue if you're in first place. How did you find the rubber banding. Did you notice anyone who shouldn't of been able to pass you when you were in first place suddenly whizzing past you near the finishing line?

Rubber banding doesn't actually seem to be an issue this time around. When I'm way ahead, I stay way ahead and can even take a hit without being passed. The CPU characters don't just magically appear behind me.

Are there no unlockable expert ghosts this time? I guess there is always other players instead.

In MKW I found I could beat the regular ghosts using auto turning and peach in the red car but I never got good enough to beat the expert ones.

I haven't found any unlockable expert staff ghosts, no. It may just be that I'm not setting good enough times to unlock them, but I've beaten three regular staff ghosts by anywhere from five to ten seconds each now, and nothing so far.

Bought!

I have to go digital on this one, otherwise I would kill Wii U's blu-ray player. midnight can't come soon enough! :D

I've just read it! Are we still entitled to the extra-game promotion buying from game?
I hope so because I'm waiting until after 10am tomorrow morning to redeem my code. The terms and conditions of the promotion mention using download codes so I'm very confident that we'll qualify for the free game.

ShopTo delivered my copy just now, confirmation has arrived from home

Just have to finish work and make my way home now

Not really.

If you are in Europe and have purchased SMK from the eShop already, Mario Kart 8 will have a discount applied to it to the value of SMK.

i actually bought smk but i don't if its worth buying it on eShop, mk8 costs 59€ on eshop with the 8€ discount it stays on 51€ plus the digital points....decisions...

So ok, I think I found why the game is crazy hard for me but not other people. So i was using the bike always, because is the vehicle I like most in the game. I always get the corners well and has a great acceleration and handling.
So thats what I used. So in 150CC Im always first with the bike in the first 2 laps, but the third is always a massacre. I just tried 2 times right now. Banana cup 150 CC with the normal bike, normal wheels and Daisy. EXACTLY same thing as yesterday, CPU always uses Peach and Waluigi, and they always have massive rubberbanding.
So just now after that I decided to use Mario and a normal kart with normal wheels. The cup was a CAKEWALK. Not becuase I was playing well, becuase I was playing like shit, I dont like kart handling, all laps I stayed between 2nd and 5th, and in the last lap I could get in the finish line first or second. Also the CPU didn't use Waluigi and Peach anymore and the rubberbanding was nearly non existant (used morty, toad and bowser).
I can corroborate this the two times if done the banana cup right now with the kart.

I dunno if other cups have the same type of thing, going to try after I eat, but yeah, there a really steep change in difficulty from using a bike to a kart. Maybe is only because the CPU changes totally when you are the first 2 laps ahead and is MUCH more agressive, making the game more difficult, and not because youve chosen a bike or a kart.
Something tells me is probably that, with the new item system they made it easy to get gold cups in 150CC but really hard to get 3 stars with the gold cup (you need to get 1st the four times and it doesnt matter if you fuck up dirving now), is something I see Nintendo doing (that would make the game easier for new or normal players and much more difficult with veterans).

What if you never earn the gold in 150cc? Is it assumed that everyone should be able to do so?

Against the CPU? It's been possible in every mario kart, Ive never had much problem at all. The most difficult was getting gold an S rank in Mario Kart Super Circuit becuase of the coins.

It's usually instant when you register on Club Nintendo. At least with registering a physical copy code it is. Not sure how long it takes for a digital copy to register on CN. Might be instantaneous.

It works.

You can find the Club Nintendo PIN code:
Inside the packaging of Mario Kart 8 software (including software which is part of the Mario Kart 8 Premium Pack – Special Edition Wii U hardware bundle);
On-screen on Wii U:
After purchasing the downloadable version of Mario Kart 8 from Nintendo eShop, or;
After the redemption of a download code for the downloadable version of Mario Kart 8.
Also in the receipt within “Menu”, then “Account Activity” in Nintendo eShop on the Wii U console, after downloading software from Nintendo eShop.

Yeah, digital copies of the 3DS promotions all were instant when using downloads. I imagine it will be the same here.

Mario Kart 8 is very good. Very very good. Very very very good. Maybe even great. The actual physics of the racing — lordy, I’m using the words “physics” to talk about a game where several of the drivers are actual babies sucking pacifiers — are so solid, so gratifying, so grounded, so imbued with personality that I’m even doing time trials. I don’t mind driving around and around on the same track trying to get a better time, checking what components a ghost is using, changing my car and trying again, working out where to use my limited boosts, finessing a shortcut. I sure didn’t care to do that in Sonic All-Racing Stars Transformed because the driving physics are mostly a matter of whether you’re the car, the boat, or the airplane. And although I’m sure it’s a major failing that your kart can’t turn into a boat or an airplane in Mario Kart 8, I can’t help but wonder that there seems to be a significant difference among the handling for an ATV, a kart, and a motorcycle, all of which are distinct chassis types.
And as much as people tell you games look good, boy does Mario Kart 8 look good. It’s the stuff of high-def dreams, of childhood memories scrubbed clean of imperfection and rendered in Pixar-perfect imagery, of speed and precision going hand-in-hand, of vision and clarity and undeniable infectious ebullience.
Music to my ears.

I was ambivalent about pink gold peach until I actually saw her in action. It's ridiculous. Metal Mario is bad, but at least he is a "real" character.

I don't mind Metal Mario. He's sort of been adapted into his own character after Smash Bros, and fits in decently well in a game full of similar looking characters. I could also easily see Nintendo adapting him into a character in a main Mario game

Pink Gold Peach isn't a real character, hasn't been in anything before, and there's no "pink gold" anything that even exists. Maybe if she was in New Super Mario Bros 2 and got the gold flower and it made her pink, but she wasn't... It just seems like they wanted a Peach in every weight class, instead of considering other possible female characters for that weight class. Honey Queen was a terrible character, but at least she was a real character, not just made up to fill a weight class...

Nintendo really needs to include an option to disable computer assistance in these games. Item distribution should be the same regardless of a racer's standing. The current approach (which has been in effect since Mario Kart 64 practically) removes all incentive for one to improve. I understand that little kids and casual players like these games, so just include a "professional" mode.

Was gonna go for the eshop release to get the Super Mario Kart offer but forgot the price would be £10> of what it is everywhere else so I've activated a free Amazon Prime trial and hoping somehow it comes tomorrow.

Would've liked to have played it at midnight and digital copies are cool...just so expensive.

I think Metal Mario is worse than PGP if only because he says "Mia momma", which is the dumbest thing ever. She doesn't say that right?

oh. I already bought SMK. Hmm, might get MK8 digitally then. Do we have any official eshop prices for europe yet?

If it ends up being £34.50 Vs £49.99 at GAME then eshop is a no-brainer. plus a free game

It still works out cheaper at Game for a digital copy. £39.99 there vs. the £49.99 minus Mario Kart on the eshop.

Weirdly enough in European terms and conditions it implies you will get a Club Nintendo PIN on the order receipt:

Again Europe said this so similar thing might not happen in America. I can imagine NOE implemented this as many new owners/members are expected to flock to this deal and it is better than the hassle otherwise.

Woah, help me out please.

So if I buy the download from Game, they will email me a download code that I redeem on the eShop for £39.99?? And I still get my £5.49 Super Mario Kart bonus off??

You'll already have purchased the game, so you won't get the additional discount.

Nah, you just get the game cheaper than the eShop regardless of if you bought Super Mario Kart VC or not. You get the download code instantly right now as well, just a shame you can't redeem it until midnight!

I was notified that my order is waiting for pickup at Best Buy (ordered online for store pickup). The email said I can't pick it up until tomorrow, but I stopped by on the way to work just in case..

They wouldn't give it to me. EVEN THOUGH I CAN SEE IT SITTING THERE IN THEIR LITTLE STORE PICKUP AREA BEHIND THE COUNTER. I could physically see the game case.

:(

I spoke to someone in customer services and she assured me that it will be despatched today for delivery tonight(?) or tomorrow, by DHL.

Anyone else having a Mario Kart party? I got around 8 people coming over mine with a few bags of wings and I've made my own beer. On all weekend!

I have a 90 inch 720p projector and a friend coming over with his wiiu and controllers so we should have at least 8 players going at it.

I also have every other Mario Kart game on their respective systems if anyone wants to play those. Saturday is gonna be great.

Does the Wii U has game streaming? Wouldn't mind checking out a bit of MK8 on YouTube even though I won't be picking it up.

Has anyone created a tournament yet? It seems by now enough people have the game to get some decent participation.

Oric created one (actually two) yesterday.

This one's with CPUs (since we were only 2-4 people playing): 6039-6630-8257

Without CPUs: 4939-5939-3528

39.99£ is roughly 49.1 €, so if you buy the game from eshop with the snes mario kart discount, it stays for 51€ plus you get the digital points which might get you 5€ back to the store... i think...it might still be worth depending if you have some digital points or not.
