The Legend of Zelda Wii-U Shown at Nintendo Digital Event ["2015"]

I don't mind a female protagonist but I don't see why you should shoe horn a character into a gender swap. Why not just have zelda take the lead or play a bigger part? Almost as bad as people saying Mario should be darker skinner in one of the games after the whole MK8 is overly white comment.

Oh god does every thread have to turn into a discussion on sexism now?
I don't see how this is a discussion about sexism. Link kind of looked like a girl at first glance in the trailer, so the discussion is if he (maybe she) is. Only a couple people have tried to steer the discussion in the direction of sexism.

The teaser looked stunning, the art style and the graphics were amazing, can't wait for 2015 and this game to come.

And it's funny seeing so many people being confused about link and if it's a girl or a boy, I blame Game Trailers and Mike Damiani lol.

He looks very effeminate but this image convinced me he's still a guy:

But I know people will continue arguing about it until we have confirmation, but my money is on Link still being a dude, just a more younger and effeminate one.

JUST listen to that scream when the monster appears, it's a male Link shouting to his horse!

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
On the art style, i'm a little concerned that detail in the distance will be hard to make out. I had a hard time with Skyward's impressionist look bkurring anything more than 300 feet away. Cool in stills, not so much when navigating the world.

Yeah, I won't be too surprised if he remains male. That screenshot you posted definitely doesn't scream female to me.

who's discussing sexism here?

so this Link is a girl?

I'm gonna be real ... IDK.
My heart is telling me that that looks like "tomboy" proportions ... and that Link even moves like a girl ... and that new ponytail aint helping me out much.

What I DO find interesting is the hints of "Ganon's race/ culture" in the design.

Saw someone bring this up on tumblr but I thought it was BS till I googled OoT Ganon.
521px-Ganondorf_Artwork_(Ocarina_of_Time).png
The design on the arm wraps and even wut tiny bit of the cloak I can see looks like the patterns on his light cloth.

Am I just seeing shit? Maybe, could be that that's just a normal pattern in the series and I just didn't notice.

As for Gender ... IDK, need a voice at least.

Where do you draw the line then? Why is a complete art style shift with Wind Waker acceptable, but not a girl Link? What about a girl Link prevents the game from being a Zelda game?

I draw the line at art shifts because, like I said, they aren't changing the established traits of the characters. Yes, they may look different, but I can still immediately tell who Link is when I see his character. It's one of the reasons the Twilight Princess reveal worked so well. When we saw that Link riding up on horseback for the first time, we immediately knew who it was.

Nothing about a girl Link prevents the game from being a Zelda game (and I'll still play it because Zelda is my favorite series), but I think that's one of the reasons why Link shouldn't be a girl. If sexuality doesn't matter in Zelda and the gender of the main character doesn't ultimately mean anything, why go against 28 years of history and established character traits just to say "Oh hey, by the way, Link's a girl now"?

I think it's really a matter of a glass half full/empty kind of thing, only no side is necessarily wrong. I can see why people would be fine with a female Link, I just think it would make a lot more sense to make a new IP with a female character.

Looks gorgeous.

I might just have to get a Wii U for this next year.

I think it's male. Anime style females are usually pretty apparent.

That said, if it's an either/or situation, I want Link to be male as always. I absolutely think they should add gender and race options though.

I think Link looks younger in this. About 14/15 years old. Have we had a Link from that age bracket yet? We've had him around 10 or 11, and in the upper teens, but I can't think of anyone in the 13-15 age.

I want a female Link, honestly, it'd be awesome. That said, I am almost wondering if this game will let you pick male or female at the start. It'd go along with the open world design.

How many times does it have to be explained that the Links in the different Zelda games aren't all the same person? Like, honestly, how many times?

I mean, of course it's Link. He just happens to look a lot like a girl because anime. With some minimal photoshop tweaking and a slightly different haircut no one would know

It's so obviously a chick.

1 - They hid her face the entire time until the last second.
2 - She has a god damn ponytail
3 - Very feminine Face, and body
4 - The camera angles they used purposely protecting showing clear looks at her face
5 - SHE LOOKS LIKE A GOD DAMN GIRL hype

Big Boss have a ponytail in TPP. Holy crap, Big Boss = Quiet!

It's really getting out of hand.

I cannot freaking wait for the large open overworld aspect. A few things they HAVE to get right though.

1. The hidden elements have to have meaning. When I explore this open world and stumble upon a hidden area and whatnot, I want the reward to not just be rupees. I want to find random items, equipment, side stories, etc..

2. The dungeons. ALBW had too many easy dungeons with simplistic puzzle design because of the random way you could approach them. Like has been mentioned before, you need to either tier them (ex: complete 3 dungeons in any order, then another 3, etc.), or there needs to be a way for dungeons to be upped in difficulty somehow after completing another dungeon (tougher enemies, added puzzles).

Did we have this same discussion when Hyrule Warriors was announced?

I love the new design. It calls back the oldschool Link designs before Ocarina of Time. Go long sideburns! Darker hair!

Also, that big landscape? You could probably get across it in like 4-5 minutes on horseback. Take a good look. It's really not that far.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
Link has never been effeminate until now. Past few games you could have shown me Marcus Fenix and I would have told it you it was Link, now he's so damn girly.

Link has always been an androgynous elf. Always.

Also lol at the people saying it's Zelda. It's Link. Link on Epona just like we've seen umpteen times. They had him in a hood and teased us because they always tease us before showing us how he looks with each new iteration.

Maybe that want Link in the horse - hence different colour tunic and the girly look. That was more than a pig tail type thing on the back once the cape was removed.

Isn't it Zelda / Sheik who wears a cape?

The characters could have those new traits and still be true to their past incarnations.

If all Link needs to be is dressed in green, a boy and carry a sword, what if he's turned into a murderer who doesn't go on any adventures whatsoever? Would that be more true to Link than a Link just as courageous and adventurous as past Links, but who's a girl?

The criteria some people have for what constitutes "Link" is simply bogus and superficial. It's fine for you to be annoyed by changes, but that doesn't make your annoyance meaningful.
"Bogus and superficial"...?
I already explained my reasons, namely stemming from seeing each character as a character. I also stated that I wouldn't like it if any of the mainstays were drastically altered, so I'm not sure why you keep harping on Link.

And I also said they would be free to do it though, and make any changed they want because it's "not the same person". It just wouldn't seem like the same character to me. Like if in the next Mario game he was a tall, skinny, woman or something. I'd buy and play it, but I'd be like "Hmm.....ok."

Hey I'm cool with an androgynous or asexual Link. Does Link have to rigidly conform to a binary sex or gender? I doubt there's much change in the design as some are thinking but it would be nice to see a break from the norm.

Yeah...hence...my comment.
But nobody responded to them. The vast majority of the comments has just been "yeah, could be a girl" and debate about if she is. The thread has deifinitely not become about sexism.

I kind of get what you were saying, I guess I just thought you were trying to say that all the gender discussion was about sexism. I guess something was just lost in translation. Chalk it up to lack of sleep I guess.
