Just watched the demo... the visuals and gameplay are stunning. the framerate is a disaster, no exaggeration, down most of the time in the low teens and even was single digits at times.

Miyazaki really need some guys that could handle his "trademark" of framerate drop in his game lol

Christ man, just keep it in your pants for once. We have seen nothing but a few seconds of leaked gameplay and a trailer that revealed only the setting and some very basic elements of the game.

Give other devs a chance to make something good before you go DECLARING THE GOTG . Shit is downright embarrassing.

I'll echo his thoughts having seen the 10 minute gameplay demo. hadnt even seen his post before writing basically the exact thing in my post.

Sorry but Game of the Generation? I love Souls games as much as the next not obsessive hardcore fan, but for me at least it'll have to do my taxes and go grocery shopping for me if it hopes to beat Witcher 3 for GOTY alone.

edit if they fix the framerate, and I'm sure they will, this will be easily the best title on ps4 when it releases.

Sounds just like Demon's Souls early footage... :D

Great to hear. I'm sure the frame rate issues will be addressed.

Ok so I just watched the E3 demo with a buddy and we loved it. Loved the fighting mechanics, weapons, visuals kick ass but the only issue that needs to be addressed are the framerate issues. The game looked to be dropping 70% of the time to about 10-15 fps. I was basically just cringing at that point. The second the demo started fps drop almost immediately and happened frequently through enemy fights and heavily at the boss battles. FromSoftware rep said they did not know about any fps drops which I don't believe, it was incredibly obvious. He said nobody else reported fps drops today.

Once again, sounds brilliant. I cannot wait to play it! Any chances the demo footage leaked, or were the both of you insiders? I would LOVE to see this footage!

This game is gonna be good. From Software's A team has been hard at work on it for years for the sound of it. I've yet to play Dark Souls 2 but haven't heard great things. :/

ah, I see why they don't want the general public to look at it yet. All the notes from the impressions sound great, though.

Very much looking forward to this (Sony just sold themselves another PS4) and love that, while still clearly building off the teams previous work with the Souls games, it's not a slave to those conventions and is doing it's own thing where appropriate.

From what I'm reading, I think Miyazaki wants to punish those who ''cheesed'' their way through the Souls series. Prepare to be overwhelmed. Liking this more and more.

Look as a huge fan of the Souls series, I've been on a high since the reveal and I think what we've seen so far looks exceptional. And knowing who is at the helm, I expect it to be top, top quality game play.

But let's not do every other dev a disservice by proclaiming that <game> is going to be THE BEST GAME IN THIS 5-7 YEAR TIME SPAN. FUCK I JUST CANT SLEEP THINKING ABOUT IT OOOMMMMMGGGGG. Shit the conference isn't over. Let's put our pants on one leg at a time.

Which is why it's a closed doors demo. Early Demon's/Dark must have been unplayable.

The game was stuttering occasionally during really heavy action, but 1) it looked amazing 2) definitely in the vein of the Souls games (animations, item pickups etc)

Stopped me from taking pictures inside :-(

Showing people ~20fps footage and causing some to boycott the game because they fail to grasp the concept of an early build doesn't seem like such a great idea. They'll probably try to polish it up and get the framerate steady before revealing anything.

Pfft I doubt the fps was that b-

I know this game is still early but I really hope From/Sony Japan lock the framerate to 30. Nothing is worse than dropped frames and it would really hamper the experience.

From what i hear optimizations of framerate are the last thing that gets worked when developing games so i wouldn't worry about drops at this early stage.

Interesting. Wonder if they're trying to make the environment more significant for fighting purposes? Like those were always kind of one-off things in the original games, where you got one crushing blow from above and never really did it again (because you couldn't get back up once you were down).

Did they ever go inside any of the buildings, or was there any implication of that? Or mostly just down and around through the corridors of the town? Any indication of destructible environments or climbing (climbing such as seen in Dragon's Dogma)? Also, as far as stealth was concerned, could you use corridors to avoid larger enemies (they couldn't enter them because they were too large)?

Oh yeah, multiple paths to get to the same destination? All the previous games do have a little bit of corridor repetition. Would be interesting to see multiple paths.

They did go into one building very briefly to show off the lighting. They did mention there are side routes to get to the end of the level, but it's hard to tell from the demo since it was hands off. I think the destructible environments are at the same scale of the previous games and there was no indication of having a climbing mechanic that is similar to Dragons Dogma. My guess is that running away to a smaller area from large enemies would be possible, but they didn't show anything like that.

Man I could hug you. If you write up an article detailing the stuff later be sure to PM me. Must read.

Seems like they're keeping it very standard, which I think will shape up well. Still using Havok for physics or was that indicated anywhere?

So woke up, and I'm trying to catch up. The hour long presser we heard about happened, but it was private?

But we do have info from an interview with Miyazaki? I hate night shift. Throws me completely off.

I am going to buy a PS4 when this releases. Period.

As someone who loves Demons Souls enough to comfortably claim that it is my favorite game ever, yet detested Dark Souls... This really catches my interest.

How the hell does someone "detest" Dark Souls???

The games are so similar and complimentary to one another.

I can imagine anyone who is a fan not loving all of the games.

Im not saying you wont like one more tha the other.... but cmon man.

They are very different games. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have very different design philosophies, which speaks to the talent of Miyazaki being able to direct two games that turn out very different yet have similar basic mechanics (slashing, spellcasting - or ranged if you like, rolling).

UMBASA ...not.

just show the fucking video from the demo? Can't wait for this game.
also #yolo strat was the best way to play souls games anyway, glad to read that.

The only feeling I had playing both was an intense desire to jump between them and I thoroughly enjoyed the differences

Made playing each one a joy and I didn't get burned out

Hence why I am super pumped that they are exploring some new ideas and directions with the next game!

And some people appreciate those differences but others do not. I feel like the level design of Demon's Souls is more akin to Mega Man while the level design of Dark Souls is similar to The Legend of Zelda (the first one). But these level designs have certain tradeoffs that change the flow of the game greatly. There is a much more asynchronous feeling to Demon's Souls while Dark Souls feels largely persistent. It's why a lot of people complained about warping in Dark Souls 1.

I'm also hyped to see what new ideas Miyazaki will experiment with next and am glad that he'll have a new IP to do it in.

I'm not sure what physics engine they're using. If I have time I'll ask tomorrow. Oh another thing I really liked was the feedback you get when you hit an enemy. Each attack produces a slash or splatter blood that gave an oomph to each hit

Sounds cool. Also heard that blood sticks to the player as you kill more stuff? (or was that just because I recently saw a Drakengard 3 let's play... I don't remember if I'm hallucinating anymore, sleep lately has been weird)

Oh yeah, how amusing is the ragdolling in this one? ;)

Arkham Knight was almost unplayable at GDC due to framerate issues and it's running great now. These kinds of optimization usually occur near the end of development.
