Eiji Aonuma: “No one explicitly said that that was Link.”

Or how this statement contradicts what he has said in the past (in a non 'joking' matter, mind you):

But my intent in saying that was humour. You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement.

Completely dismisses his talk about changing the conventions of Zelda:

"Rather, the more we change it, the more I get fired up. Having someone think 'Huh? Is this Zelda?!' at first, then 'Oh, it is Zelda,' is what we're going for. Something that wouldn't make it matter whether Link or Princess Zelda appear in it or not. Something where it wouldn't even matter if Zelda is actually a princess, or not."

that's good enough for me. shucks. good night, all

I still stand by the idea that the MMGN article and the Game Informer article don't seem to line up with each other. In the GI article it comes off as though he thoroughly enjoys (or at least is interested in) the female protagonist theory, while the MMGN article makes it sound like he wants to end it as soon as possible, despite the MMGN article coming out after the GI one.

Maybe he didn't realize how far the news was spreading at first.

It's entirely possible that Nintendo told him to set the record straight after the rumors started to spread further, rather than keep stringing the fans along.

Maybe he didn't realize how far the news was spreading at first.

Except that he seemed to want the speculation to spread based on this line:

Eiji Aonuma: That might be something that consciously we kind of did, but not to say anything specific – I am not saying anything specific – but, I am hoping people continue to comment, and I will continue to follow the fan comments and reactions to the trailer. I am certainly curious, and I am sure there are things we as developers can glean.

Game Informer also notes that he brought the topic up without prompting.

I will predict they're be multiple Characters specifically two twins Male (Sword and other brute Items) and Female (Arrow and other swift items) Links. Which can opens the door for optional multiplayer.

What if both sources reported as accurately as they could, but Aonuma gave conflicting answers specifically to cause even more speculation in the fan base?

I better go fetch my tinfoil hat.

Speaking of which,
Does he have any government-issued ID he could hold up

Aonuma, too
I hope you're joking.

I want to believe so hard. This was literally my dream Zelda game, right in front of my eyes. And then so unceremoniously snatched away.

#TeamZelda forever. If not this game then the next.

And we need them to hold up a local newspaper with the date, please!

Every time he's talked about shaking things up, it's always been from a structural perspective - the aforementioned Nintendo Direct had slides about the exact same things he said when introducing this title. Doesn't seem like he ever considered changing up Link as part of this.

There was that article where he was talking about challenging the conventions of the Link and Zelda characters (Zelda not being a princess, etc).

Well that kind of sucks. That said, the Zelda team definitely keeps tabs on what the Zelda fandom wants since they usually try to address their criticisms in each subsequent game. Perhaps the interest over this particular issue will make them aware that people really do want a playable female character in Zelda next time around.

That said, androgynous Link is still cool and progressive.

When I first saw the trailer I thought it was someone completely different until someone mentioned Link in the chat.

I hope it's a character that facilitates what I love about Zelda games.

Strong dungeon-design.

By that metric, it could be Link, Zelda, Impa, some sort of goblin-creature, Kratos, Mario, etc.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?

Keep the hope alive. I mean, I'm pretty bummed. You seem unaffected for now.

Hey #TeamFemaleLink, remember that Final Fantasy Type-0 Vita debacle that happened yesterday? No you know how we feel to a lesser extent. Hurts don't it?

Another interesting comment I've heard, quite frequently actually, is that, "Oh Link's a woman. Link is female now."

Q: I thought that, too. I thought maybe it was Zelda when I first saw Link on Epona in the distance.

Eiji Aonuma: That might be something that consciously we kind of did, but not to say anything specific – I am not saying anything specific
Link IS Zelda

Zelda is Link... Zelda is a MAN

"Archer needs health badly!"

I sure hope this is not what Aonuma is thinking. It's hard to know when you've got translations of his words in various quality floating about, and hard to reconcile the mmgn article and his previous statements.

Maybe you get to choose Links gender at the start if the game, makes senses considering Nintendo have been targeting females lately...

OP needs to be updated with the MMGN article and possibly those photos as well. They're just as legit if not more than the VentureBeat report.

I don't think it's that hard to reconcile. Someone asked him why Link looked "weird" and he joked that he never said it was Link. Later he made the observation that a lot of people were speculating that Link was female, and he indicated that they "kind of" purposefully made him look that way. Now he's seen interest in the rumor grow way past his expectations and he wants to just end it now before people get really disappointed when they find out a year later that it was really just Link after all.

He said something dumb, yeah, but his statements and Link's design do indicate that they know that the fans are interested in something different and that they would not be adverse to a feminine, or female, protagonist.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I really don't get why people had such an odd reaction to Link's new design. What is so different about this androgynous elf compared to previous ones? He's a bit more slender but that's it. At least Aonuma's trolling was amusing.

By the way, I forgot about this till just now but I found this photoshop on Tumblr, courtesy goes to whoever the artist is. It's a nice look as to what Link could look like in his tunic. I think the hair was recolored.

I like. If he'd been wearing that outfit in the trailer would anyone have thought he was a girl or a different character?

Navi:
Zelda, do you remember the sinking of that castle 2 years ago?
Zelda:
Of course.
Navi:
Demons unleashed a flood on the world that covered 80% of its
landmass - - your classic nightmare.
It didn’t take long for the goddess to put a magic barrier around
the whole mess. And then that massive castle fortress went up
on the surface.
Zelda:
The “Forsaken Fortress”. I hear the king of all darkness hasn't
quite shown up yet.
Navi:
It takes time. But in the meantime, the Fortress’s become a landmark,
a symbol of evil things to come.

Navi:
Approximately six hours ago, the Forsaken Fortress was seized by a
armed group.
Zelda:
Do we have an ID?
Navi:
Former members of the Moblin special anti-barrel training
squad, “Dead Cel”. Octorock private army members may also be
involved. It’s a highly-trained group, and they have the Forsaken Fortress
under complete control.
Zelda:
Who’s the leader?
Navi:
That we’ll discuss later.

I still hope to see an explanation later today for the Game Informer/MMGN discrepancy in Aonuma's complete mindset as far as fan speculation goes. Maybe Aonuma himself can clarify over Miiverse and settle it for even the most stubborn skeptics, the way that he stated that the trailer was in-game?

regardless he/she looks like a girl, more so then normal.

This we can all agree on. I wonder what the decision was behind the design. Aonuma's comments lead me to support the androgynous player character theory more and more, that the appearance shouldn't matter, and regardless of the player's gender, you can pretend to be Link.

Still wish you could choose like in Pokemon though.

You might want to read the past few posts.

OK, I had read the GI interview but not the MMGN one. But still, as others have said, he needs to explain the discrepancy in his remarks. To GI he didn't want to confirm or deny anything, and seemed to almost be suggesting that they may be taking people's reactions to the trailer to heart when making the game.

There was that article where he was talking about challenging the conventions of the Link and Zelda characters (Zelda not being a princess, etc).

Combine this not only with the "shaking up the conventions of Zelda" in general speech, but even the very nature of the trailer. He focused on how much the game differed from past installments, even the original, and ended it all with the sentence, "I think that one convention we can keep, right?" It was referring to fierce enemies in otherwise peaceful-looking scenery when he said it. It doesn't seem like a remark that would come from the same game maker who would relatively shortly thereafter tell an interviewer, "You know, you have to show Link when you create a trailer for a Zelda announcement."
