Wow, so much praise. I can't wait to see this.

Without a doubt, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the best looking video game that was shown at E3, boasting character models that were crisp and astoundingly lifelike, with truly tremendous facial animations.

To say that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a massive and astounding undertaking is barely scratching the surface. As one of the most visually stunning video games ever created, The Phantom Pain is sure to please in that department. Outside of graphics, it is clear that there are so many gameplay elements worth getting excited about as well.

It's pretty incredible to see people say this about the graphics when it's cross-gen and there are current/next-gen only titles such as Batman: Arkham Knight or The Witcher 3 out there.

yea except TPP is 200x bigger than GZ

That doesn't at all indicate how much longer TPP is taking. That whole time line applies to TPP development, anyway. It's not like GZ is some full-blown AAA production or anything. I won't drop the "demo" bomb, but let's be realistic at the very least.

Yeah, for sure. The Phantom Pain has been in development (alongside the Fox Engine) since about 2010/2011 (or rather, since Peace Walker was finished). I don't think the production of Ground Zeroes is any indication of how far along they are and it is likely that we see a 2015 release.

Graphics, graphics, graphics. Isn’t that all the vocal majority cares about these days? I can go on and on about the new features, story, and gameplay, but in the end if it doesn’t look good, you probably won’t buy it; so, let me say a quick few words about graphics. It is absolutely spectacular. Big Boss and his friends are all very well animated. Kojima Productions has payed close attention to detail for literally everything. From the goat shitting as he’s being fulton-ed to Mother Base to the incredibly small stream of water you’ll crawl through, The Phantom Pain is built to be as real as possible (for now). In our demo, the presenter made sure to (eagerly) point out that the game was running at 1080p and 60fps on a PS4, to which no one in the room cared for at the time. We just wanted to see the game.

All in all, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain looks like a classic Metal Gear Solid game, just with better visuals, more nifty features, and a much larger world.

I still can't believe this game runs at 1080p and 60fps. What an achievement.

Dunno about "achievement". It is a cross-gen game and won't have the same fidelity as other games coming out next year. But yeah it's awesome. Bestest facial animation.

Well compared to most of the other games coming out on next-gen, MGS is one of the few that actually delivers a 60fps experience.

i expect a lot of the voicework being done now relate to the side mission briefing dialogue. the side missions are secondary or even tertiary content so i can see the voice recording for these going on quite late in development.

Robin Atkin Downes (voice of Miller) posted "new TPP script." What the shit, are they STILL doing voice recordings?

https://twitter.com/robin_a_downes/status/479021280377589760

it's pretty standard for video games to have the voice actors come in many times throughout production. game design changes the script and vice versa throughout the course of development. say certain moments or staging are altered in terms of gameplay that would require more VOs. especially kaz who is ridiculously chatty in these games

Yeah, Kaz talks a lot in the side missions. They've probably got the main stuff done.

Makes me wonder if they will get Kiefer back in the booth as well...

More of his delicious dialogue plz.

Figured I'd ask here.
Trying to play GZ and it's taking forever to load. On ps4 the loading in the top right isn't even there anymore. I take it my games busted?

I just love how much player agency there seems to be in this game. 60fps? Fuck yes. The thing I remember most about my first impressions about MGS2 was how smooth it was. Aside from that, I wonder now that the next MGS game will be an open world game, can we comfortably go back to linear MGS? I mean, sure we can because that's the kind of MGS game that we mostly know, but were there to be MGS6 would you expect it to be open world again or linear?

It's possible it might have frozen. Mine did that when I tried to start up the game as my internet connection was acting up.

I think if they remake Metal Gear 1 + 2, it'll be like Ground Zeroes, open ended but with smaller maps. My concern is how a sequel can compare to Phantom Pain when you not only have open world, but also an entire base to customize and explore. Sure won't be doing that as Solid Snake any time soon and I can't see them making any more Big Boss stories after this.

Maybe everybody at Solis builds a base to fight those nanomachine zombies Kojima said he would be willing to write a story about?

Wasn't Outer Heaven supposed to be an entire nation outside of just the main fortress? I think an open world version of Zanzibar Land and Outer Heaven would be possible, with a lot of reivention that would be required anyway. And a game about the Boss I think could work as open world as well. You bring up a good point about no base management element, though. I wouldn't have a problem going back to linear for the next game if it was required, in fact I hope there's a handful of linear levels or interiors in TPP like the hospital that bring back that feeling of classic MGS.

Open world Zanzibar land...
I want it.

According to Kojima's recent tweet, he's going to show us a 'limited' version of the E3 demo on both version of Kojima Station this Thursday.

Two questions:

1. Do we know what "Spirits of Ground Zeroes" means? Is it referring to the spirits of those who have died in a nuclear attack or something? Did we ever really find out exactly why Ground Zeroes is called Ground Zeroes?

2. Do you guys think we will have to fight child soldiers? That first shot appears to show the corpses of those child soldiers from previous trailers, and BB is walking through the wreckage. Either he was fighting with them, or against them. I can see it being against them, as Kojima has claimed that there will be really controversial things in TPP.

1. Yeah, spirits as in the spirits of Big Boss's fallen comrades from Mother Base. It's called Ground Zeroes because it's the 'ground zero' for multiple characters (Boss and Kaz).

2. More than likely, but it's quite a taboo subject, killing kids. That might not bode well. It might be something specific to cutscenes.

Can just tranq them! Then watch Big Boss proceed to kill them anyway.

TPP gameplay presentation (30mins) equivalent to what we showed in E3 that only 600-800 people had witnessed. Will be at Kojima Station tmrw!

Thank goodness. At least we didn't have to wait too long.

I think Big Boss' descent into madness can't be related to killing kids, but instead seeing kids unable to fight for themselves.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Cross posting from the "Is Big Boss a terrible person" thread because I feel like this kind of fits better in a general MGSV thread.

Some quotes from the Polygon feature on BB's descent into villainy throughout the game:

"Everyone knows Big Boss becomes the enemy and Solid Snake becomes the player, in the villain's story. This is very delicate. This is something very difficult, for the player to become the bad guy, the villain. But I have to balance it in a way that the player understands why this is happening, where this is all coming from. Gameplay-wise, I don't want people to stop playing. 'I'm becoming the bad guy, I'm done with this.' I have to keep some heroism in this character."

The prologue's potent themes of child soldiers and war crimes and violation are there to serve a purpose that The Phantom Pain will reveal. Big Boss may be bad, but he has his reasons. He doesn't seem to be advocating for relativism so much as he's headstrong about dealing with deliberately uncomfortable themes. To Kojima, players' experience is lot like watching Walter White in Breaking Bad.

Personally, I'm still hoping for an MGS2 style switcharoo towards the end of the game, where we play as Solid Snake or even someone else. This would take BB out of the "hero" role and allow his character to develop into someone more in line with his presentation in MG1 and MG2. I'm afraid that they're going to tiptoe around his transformation into a villain. Best case scenario has him ending up as a parallel to Solidus, where he had good and noble intentions, but went to detestable means to achieve them. Worst case scenario has MG1-era Big Boss retconned to be a sympathetic villain. Empathy is enough - I can empathize with Solidus, and even with Liquid, but I sure as hell don't sympathize with them. I don't want to sympathize with Villain Big Boss. I want BB to be someone we want to take down by the end of MG1.

I want the downfall to be a result of his actions becoming questionable. You can see why he's doing them and maybe even relate a bit, but they're mostly pretty bad. It's always better that way.

Jindrax

His downfall is not oing to be because of 1 thing.
The game is huge, so the story is probably super long.
There'll probably be a heap of things that keep going wrong and eventually they'll be something that pushes him over the edge and makes him go total maniac rampage on everyone :p.

Is there a website that I can use to read up on the MGS lore and stories from the games?

I tried wiki and that wasnt the best of sites to use.

I know it's been mentioned a lot, but I'm really hoping this game ends bleeding seamlessly into MG1. Then we get a MG1 and MG2 combo remake as MGS VI to end the series.

I don't really want to take over as Solid at the end of this game. Leave that for one final full game. With Hayter, of course.

I'm fine with Sutherland as BB, but Solid neeeeeeds to be Hayter.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the Breaking Bad connection yet. The theory is that
Holly White
grows up, driven by her sense of justice after learning about her father, joins the CIA. Then she goes into Zanzibar as a journalist. The rest is history.

Didn't Kojima namedrop Project Ogre when posting this image or something? That was confusing, especially now we know Project Ogre was Metal Gear all along. Looks more like something from the scrapped ZOE project.

I think that was just journalists attributing EVERYTHING Kojima tweeted as being Project Ogre. I think at the time I was thinking Zoe was ogre and mgsv wasn't. I wasn't expecting MGS to have the 'actual demons'.

Forgot to mention her connection to Big Boss. He sold some of her father's product to raise funds for the Outer Heaven uprising. Jack and the Nazis are Diamond Dogs veterans

Perhaps. But Kojima tweets knowing the press will make a connection. Everything that man does seems to have some PR basis.

The trailer on the Playstation channel didn't have Kiefer's dialogue at the end that the PEGI trailer does.

Not bad. The new voice fits this version of Big Boss like a glove.

Why the hell does Skullface have a domino mask at the end of the trailer?

What if it turned out that Skullface and Snake were the same person. Skullface IS Ishmael!?

Everything in the gameplay demo looked great except the way the fulton recovery system is presented... which killed about 50% of my hype.

Meh.
