I think the problem with this kind of question is that you are going to be biased towards trailers for games you love, i mean its human nature.

Having said that, i honestly think the official trailers for Skyrim and Fallout 4 are 2 of the best videogame trailers ever. They are like mega budget summer movie trailers.

Many people have mentioned Halo 3 but only two people have posted the trailers they were referring to. As I said before a trailer needs to be mentioned twice to be considered for a nomination and so far that hasn't happened. There were several trailers, which one are you referring to?

I am at work so half of these aren't loading but honestly, the best trailer I ever saw for a game was FFVIII.

It was so good it ended up being the introduction movie for the game. From that early beach wave to the music and... wow.

I think you're right that people ride on nostalgia a lot but the games for some of these trailers were mediocre and yet Dead Island is in the top 5 at the moment.

I saw this on tv here in the UK, I bought the game solely because of it. Even though I eventually got to learn that GTA wasn't for me
