Shuhei Yoshida: Powers part of Sony E3 conference was "a mistake"

Neither of them had execs walking around giving stats, charts, and saying they were the greatest. Only Sony wasted peoples time in their conference.

That 6 minutes of wasted time must have been really painful. ( 2 minutes of stats + 4 minutes of Powers)

Everthing else that most of us consider time-wasters were actually relevant things that mattered. ( PSNow open beta, PSTV western launch, F2P games on Playstation )

Was much more than this. A guy was up there talking for 20 mins straight about other nonsense too including vib ribbon and how playstation is always the most innovative and has the best engineering.

But you're missing the point man. Those 6 minutes could have been used to show 3 CG trailers of retail 2016 games.
I thought all 3 sucked and the CG trailers piss me off to no end. I just thought Sonys conferrnce couldve cut at least 30 minutes.

Ah, okay. I assumed you were okay with that like other people in this thread were. Yeah, they could have made the conference shorter. The result would have still been the same though.

Why are there so many history revisionists in this thread?

To be fair, only MS showed nothing but games. Nintendo spent some time on amiibos. Sony was the only one who actually pulled out charts and dragged their own show down.

Neither of them had execs walking around giving stats, charts, and saying they were the greatest. Only Sony wasted peoples time in their conference.

What hardcore gamers don't understand is that not only are the conferences for consumers and media, it is also geared towards investors and shareholders and what they can expect from each company over the next fiscal year. While to some of you, it seems "OMFG SONY SHOWED A TV SHOW FAILLLLLLL", to an investor they could have seen it as, "Hmm, Sony is trying to get into the television media section while using PS4 as a catalyst, etc".

I would suggest for people to read this article from Michael Pachter which is basically an analyst breakdown for investors as to how E3 played out in their eyes (The Ultimate E3 Recap for Investors) We like to thinkwe're the center of the gaming universe, but these companies have more at stake then the ire of forum denizens whining.

Indies was 6 minutes last year.
7 minutes this year. (Magicka 2 & Devolver Digital)

So what the heck are you talking about?

No Man's Sky?

I'm sorry, but people didn't spend $400 to play games that could run on android tablets or a PS3. This will likely rub the NeoGaf community the wrong way, but, Indies do not belong on stage at E3. Go look on Youtube and watch some of the hardcore Sony fans reviews of E3 and you're going to hear that exact comment.

And it looks worse when everytime I go to my friend's (every weekend) and boot his PS4 up, it looks like a bunch of garbage from Steam migrated it's way over to PS4.

I fucking LOVE Hotline Miami, but I don't want to see it on stage when I'm expecting to have my senses blown and my half-a-thousand dollar purchase justified. You're right, I forgot that Vib Ribbon was lead-up to MKX, which was around 2 minutes.

2-3 minutes on stats, Youtube and streaming.
3 minute on F2P.
3 minutes on PSNow.
3 minutes on PSVita ( mostly Now on Vita)
2 minutes on PSTV.
2 minutes on Vib Ribbon + leadup to MKX.

So 5+4 minutes = 9 minutes, yeah, somewhere there.

I'm just baffled that so many of you care about theatrics.

Because that's exactly what these conferences are. Nothing but theatrics that adds an illusion of grandeur to the only things that matter to us, which is content, news and announcements.

Powers segment is an example. In my mind, I translate that segment to nothing more than a statement of a 'Powers TV series is coming and free with PS+.' Everything else is nonsensical theatre that adds no value for me to keep in my brain.

I was, a little bit until I learned that it was due for Spring 2015. That meant to me that Sony was planning to stagger Bloodborne showcases throughout Gamescom to TGS, and probably a blow-out in Feb/March before release.

I've always been a believer in looking at game conferences/events in a full-year cycle thing. Especially even more so in the current era where Nintendo does its Directs at their whim. To me, a company having a bad E3 could easily rebound with a strong Gamescom/TGS, or having a great E3 does not mean they'll have a good show later in the year. That's why a company's FY overview and how they stagger their overall pipeline introductions are more important to me than being wowed for 90 minutes at one event.

I think Nintendo has been the best at serving crow at this event for that reason. They showed a healthy amount of 2014+2015 content, and Nintendo being Nintendo, we can realistically expect for them to still have a healthy amount of 2015 stuff unrevealed because that's the way Nintendo works.

Nobody's disputing owner disappointment.
I'm just baffled that you care about theatrics.
What's more useless and theatrical than a reveal CG trailer of a game we already see and knew about?
That CG trailer is the definition itself of useless theatrics.

"Because that's exactly what these conferences are. Nothing but theatrics that adds an illusion of grandeur to the only things that matter to us, which is content, news and announcements."
Where's the content, the news and the announcement in the Bloodborne CG trailer? Title apart we already knew more than that trailer told us. That's useless theatrics.

E3 and all the videogames events should be about gameplay, this is why nintendo won hands down no matter the preferences, sorry but i don't hype for some theatrics like a CG trailer, it didn't add anything to what we already knew, CG means nothing to me, i don't get hype based on nothing, i get hype for gameplay, not on useless theatrical CG trailers.

"I was, a little bit until I learned that it was due for Spring 2015. That meant to me that Sony was planning to stagger Bloodborne showcases throughout Gamescom to TGS, and probably a blow-out in Feb/March before release."
Didn't you say that company politics doesn't matter to us? Then why suddenly how Sony plans to show Bloodborne matters?

You yourself said you were disappointed, i really don't get why you defend it so much.

The conference was the definition of mediocre. There should have been gameplay of Uncharted and Bloodborne. What they showed of The Order was god awful. The "Fan Letters" was goddamn painful especially considering all the shit Sony says about how it cares about what it's fans want and that they actually look at the feedback fans send.

This is the dumbest shit I've heard in a long while.
Indies are games just like every other COD or Assassin's Creed.
They belong on stage! Just look at No Man's Sky, which was the game of the show for a lot of people here and the media.
And YouTube comments? Seriously? So Sony fans are only on YouTube and not here on GAF, Twitter, and all the other boards? Just because some noobs are posting crap on YouTube doesn't mean they represent the majority of a certain community. Ffs grow up!

That's exactly why i was disappointed with the conference.
-Bloodborne CG when we already saw gameplay
-Let It Die... let it die
-LBP3 is very disappointing imo(not saying that it's a bad game, i was just expecting some creativity, instead it looks like LBP2 with just new characters)
-Grim Fandango was ridiculous, not even a logo and it will probably be on other platforms too
-Abzu... I don't even remember what it is lol(i'm not saying it's a bad game, i really don't remember what it is!)
-No Man's Sky is great but we already knew it and it's not exclusive
-Uncharted 4(meh i say) we already knew about it and all we got was few seconds of cutscene
-AK and FC4 gameplay ok, but they are already knew about them and they are non-exclusive games

The bolded, and The Order: 1886 video showing the horror side of the game were right up to my alley, which only goes to show how tastes vary. As for No Man's Sky, it's exclusive the same way as Outlast, PvZ:GW, Below, and Inside were/are.

When it comes to CGI reveals and multiplatforms, that's what Microsoft's conference also had in abundance. It didn't bother me there either, as I was hoping to see something about the next Mass Effect and Tomb Raider in the E3 conferences. And it's always nice to see more material of anticipated games we already knew about, like Arkham Knight and No Man's Sky.

Here's the E3 video of Abzu: http://youtu.be/403DsARZqoo
It reminds me of Thatgamecompany's games visually.

While I thought their E3 showing was solid and quite diverse in terms of content that section definitely stood out in terms of pacing... Hopefully they use the feedback from E3 to improve they press conference for Gamescom.

Personally would have loved to have seen some of that Powers time used to showcase Driveclub and it's dynamic menu system and weather instead.

My first comment was responding to your ridiculous hyperbole of an opinion. The second is directed towards people saying that Powers should have never been shown although them giving stats and talking about the show was around 6 minutes. Way shorter than claims of "It took 20-30 minutes out of the whole show!"

As to charts and stats, of course MS and Nintendo did it years ago. Nintendo was on top of the world with Wii and MS was on top of NA with 360. Now look at the reversal. Nintendo is struggling to sell Wii Us while MS is dealing with losing marketshare every month to the PS4 so of course both companies would put a central focus on just games to appeal to as many consumers as possible. However, when Sony not only shows games, new features for their products, and expanded services, they get their entire conference dinged on a tv show segment that went on too long because the director was ad-libbing (as already confirmed by EviLore of all people) instead of sticking to his script? With such confirmation bias coming out of you, you want to sling "fanboy" at me? Ok.

No Man's Sky is PRECISELY why I bought a Gen8 system. Obviously, it's coming to PC, but I am not going to shell out for a whole new games system if there is no promise of new concepts and new gameplay ideas being worked with.

It's one of the things that made the PS2 such a great system. It wasn't that I got more of what I liked. It was that there was stuff out there I had no idea I would like or be in a videogame. Gen7 was a pretty large letdown in that sense. Thankfully, there was some good stuff in that Gen but I am definitely liking that Gen8 is shaping up the way it is.

The people who want more God of War, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy and Tekken certainly have their place. Don't talk crazy against No Man's Sky, though. Once upon a time, all your big franchises were just a really fresh game with new concepts and solid gameplay. Hell, Final Fantasy was a last ditch effort before Square closed its doors, even.

I dunno, maybe it was the focus on games or maybe i like some MS game more, i dunno, but i preferred the MS conference to the Sony one.

About AK, NMS and other non exclusive games, obviously i want more gameplay, but imo a company should give priority to its games, a company should show them extensively and deeply, not just some CG, gameplay of third party non-exclusive games should just be a good bonus or filler imo.

I understand why they do it, doesn't mean I like it. Like I said, it's been a personal peeve of mine to not make judgements of game announcements till a full year cycle anyway, so that's just me being me.

And it's not about defending it, it's just me framing my perspective in the context of this thread's main topic ( which is about Powers, not about Bloodborne ), because this has annoyed me for a good while now. Ironically, it was more of Nintendo really, because Nintendo's lack of a press conference always brings up bullshit like "they're not at E3 WAHWAHWAH."

Didn't we already know that the leak was real, i mean obviously without an announcement we couldn't be 100% sure but it was blatantly reliable and i was not the only one thinking that way.

Maybe i don't follow MS and Nintendo news enough, but there were no leaks of the games you cited, it's not the same situation.

-Phantom Dust, Scalebound, Star Fox Wii U: before E3 we knew/see few or nothing about them, after E3 we knew more

-Bloodborne:before the E3 we knew about its existence and gameplay, the E3 just told us the official name.

It's not the same imo.

Which is just saying: "Nobody asked for that stuff, except for people who did, but you don't matter because there aren't as many of you as there are of us."

They announced Bloodborne, No Man's Sky, Uncharted 4, LBP3. Showed Batman Arkham Knight gameplay, amongst many others. Obviously they showed things that people cared about. Just because they didn't have a "holy shit" moment, whatever that means, doesn't change that.

I would guess, in this gaming environment, people listing JRPGs as something to show at E3 would be a comparable announcement to Grim Fandango and other indie titles.

What? Lol!

I think/feel like the gameplay in Naughty Dogg's games is mediocre at best. Float-y, automatic, and devoid of consequence. I've fallen asleep playing Uncharted and TLOU.

I feel the same way about the God Of War games.

I think that even though Microsoft doesn't have the same output as Sony 1st Party, they do a much better job at finding fun, gameplay-focused titles to put their $ behind.

He's not wrong. I don't think they should've cut the Powers segment completely but just have House talk about it for a minute or so, how it works being added to plus and move on. Sony Entertainment probably pushed them to talk about it but Bendis didn't need to be there just to show a single image of concept art.

The Powers TV show is a huge get, the comics are very popular, and there is a demographic that is really interested in it. However, I agree, they should have made it something shorter, House talks about it, shares some comic book sales numbers, then moves on.

This announcement would have been better at a Comic Con or similar "Con."

I'm sorry, but flannel beard guy's abstract puzzle platformer that he developed while living below an urban rooftop garden isn't exactly what I wanted out of next-gen.

The thing is, I don't own a tablet, and my 2008 laptop certainly wouldn't run a game like No Man's Sky as good as the PS4. I couldn't be more pleased with the indies now coming to consoles, as it saves me the expense of getting a new PC, which I was thinking about to do before the PS4 was unveiled, to get to experience what used to be available only on Steam.

There was well over an hour of gaming content in the Sony conference, so it was very much focused on games as well. Perhaps it's just about the matter of taste in games. For me, the only things of interest the MS conference offered were Inside, and the multiplatforms Mass Effect & Tomb Raider. I don't really care about Platinum's games, don't own a single one of theirs, so that didn't do anything for me. And even that was rumored before the event, so it wasn't that big of a surprise either.

As far as I can remember, it's very rare for games to be revealed with gameplay content, instead of CGI/in-engine videos. LBP3 being one of the exceptions. I don't see how that should make this particular E3 a disappointment.
