Wolfenstein TNO: 2014 GotY + one of the best shooters ever *GIF WARNING*

None of that matches my experience, and I found it more viable to rely on my agility. Armored enemies can be taken down pretty easily from the back, they have a slow turn radius which can be exploited. The robotic ones have batteries there to be shot off.
I think a lot of how you play the game comes down to whether you're playing it on a Mouse/Keyboard or a controller.

I was watching a TwitchTV streamer play the PC version with 360 controller the other day, then after the chat bitched him out and shamed him enough, he switched to M/K and was playing the game very differently. Less cover, less ADS, and less spray n pray.

Between run n gun, cover, and stealth, it's to the game's compliment that all three different styles are viable and enjoyable (in my opinion).

As good as this game is, player movement and traversal still isn't as intuitive as it could be. That moment after you crash the space shuttle and then swing into a visitor's room full of nazis, there's a bar across the room from where you start. There's a lot of fire from one of the room and I shot the nazi behind the bar while taking cover behind a couch. I tried running toward then diving over the counter to get the dropped rifle and take cover there myself, but it's a pain trying to hop over it. In the heat of the moment, you pretty much have to run around it, then take cover. lame.

It seems to be a problem in a lot of FPS games though. I'm always on the lookout for FPSs (or any first person game) that isn't an arena shooter that handles vaulting/climbing well. Such a common hindrance to otherwise good games.

Weird, cause I finished the game on Uber (twice) and didn't see much use for cover unless if I was being pounded by the heavies. Which is when I'd switch to the power weapons (shotgun shrapnel, rockets, LKW, laser rifle) and take them out first. I would be getting more damage sticking in cover than flanking around enemies. If there was a statistic for how long I'd stay in cover, it'd probably be 2% of my entire playthroughs.

I'd assume it's only possible to play that way if you're very skilled at the game. Do you have any videos of yourself playing? I'd be interested to see how you go about it.

Could anyone tell me how many discs the 360 version has? I picked up the case in the shops and it was a big case, so yeah. Oh, and my only other console is a Wii U so 360 is my only option if I decide to get it.

DICE's animation system in Battlefield 3 + 4 is one of the best at this. It feels amazing vaulting over objects in those games. I'd suspect it's a byproduct of their work on making Mirror's Edge feel right. It actually feels like a body going over something and attempting to keep momentum.

Totally! Whenever I run and vault over cover I feel like Captain America or something. Just like a powerful SOB.

I may have to try out the latest BFs then. Mirror's Edge is one of the few "grounded/believable" first-person games I've played where I didn't feel like I was controlling a block tofu when trying to hop over scenery, though I don't count it as an outright FPS.

By all means, give me a Max Payne dive in the next Machine Games title if it means not feeling like all scenery must be run around, even mid fight.

Just finished it on Hard. it was good, not great. Not sure why all the hype around it since release. It looked good, it played well, the story was solid, but there was nothing amazing about any of it. It didn't really have any low points, but it also didn't hit any highs...it just kinda stayed in it's zone until the end. The ending was a little anti-climactic though.

Any particular chapter or section you want? Let me get further in the game on the PS4 version and I'll upload some videos. I'm not that skilled lol.

These were just meh videos by me in the very start (that I linked in the OP):

I think the misunderstanding here is that when I say 'cover', I'm not just referring to when you sit behind cover and keep peaking over/around, such as when you hold L1 for example. I hardly did that either. But if you're doing something like going back behind a wall to reload and regain health, or you're avoiding fire by walking behind a wall and crouching behind a railing, or you're peaking around corners, that's all a use of cover.

I'd be very impressed if you're able to complete one of those larger rooms without using cover. I assume it's possible, but very difficult. After all, you died in that first video. lol

I'm not saying that type of gameplay is a bad thing, but the vast majority of the current big-budget FPS games play in a similar fashion.

TNO is definitely my game of the year so far. Such a great, complete experience and it balances its serious nature and its campy side in a really fun, satisfying way.

You'd do the same in the original Wolfenstein, behind doors. Is that considered a cover shooter now? Give me a specific section to do a video on, because my point is you can play the game with a focus on movement rather than the "vast majority of the current big-budget FPS games play" where running and gunning around isn't rewarded. Of course, Wolfenstein isn't an arena shooter where there is focus on strafing around with not much cover. Let's not forget, Wolfenstein started out as stealth games so walls as cover is retained the same way here but not to the extent to be the majority crutch as in other games.

Feel like there's some moving of the goalposts over the semantics of what a cover shooter is. That term implies you're spending the majority of the game in cover. Where moving far ahead is a no-no, where you could break the scripting, where you'd die by unpredictable barrages of gunfire, where you'd get random game overs lol.

So I decided to come back to this game recently after not playing, as I had beat it a few times during launch week. Uber is just too easy outside of the bridge and final boss. Kind of wish there was a more difficult option.
Random videos of me on Uber:
~50 MB WebM
~34 MB MP4 of a different area.

I wonder if it's a combination of my mediocre skill at shooters and the fact I have the console version, because whenever I tried to run and gun, I'd die pretty quickly. Visceral's got mad skill.

This game looks interesting and I'm looking for a good looking game to try on my new PS4. Killzone is not my cup of tea, in terms of gameplay but this looks decent. How is the difficulty on this game? Is it comparable to old school stuff like Duke Nukem 3D? I never liked the boss battles in games like that.

Don't stop moving. Don't ADS ever. Run in small zigzags if you can't go straight. Turn up sensitivity if using a controller. Don't hesitate too much.

I lost interest during the
prison breakout
levels, but this thread made me go back and finish it. Glad I did, best first person shooter I've played in a very long time. Great story, great gameplay.

Anya is
totally Ramona, right? Give that girl her own game.

So I hear the audio is messed up on PS4, is that the case? It's what's been putting me off from picking it up.

it still is.
dont know why they havent bothered to correct this.
gun sounds are especially weak for some reason.

its not a showstopper for me but clearly apparent.

I played on Über this way almost all of the time, and tried to run around as much as possible to find new interesting areas. As you say, the only time when you are forced into cover is when the really heavy enemies start appearing.

I really liked this, because so many other FPS games out there forces you to use cover and peek out very gently to shoot, and then go back to regain health as soon as you get shot with one or two bullets. It's so fucking boring and doesn't reward any risky gameplay.

lol I don't know why I just discovered this lightbulb interaction

Yeah I did that light bulb thing on my first playthrough. Super random but hey why not. I figure it's a fun little nod to "flashing light means go this way" used in level design, and BJ screws it in thinking "Silly game design."

Just beaten.
GOTY contender for me.

Too much good stuff to say about it for my crap English.
OP says alot of right things about it.

I will replay it for sure, at Über .

Saw this was $40 on amazon now. I'm going to pick it up. Any recommendations for platform? It seems like PS4/Xbone are pretty even keel both at 1080/60frames. I'm leaning towards Xbone.

XB1 and PS4 versions are pretty much the same, if you have a gaming PC it just comes down to preference of controls.

part where you get in to a missile and end up on a ship on something like that

That is absolutely a realtime cutscene. I just went back to confirm. Unless it's the only cutscene rendered at 60 FPS.

Yes, that scene is absolutely in-engine and not prerendered at all. Headshot gore is as satisfying as it needs to be, in this game.

Dual weild shotguns sounds amazing on paper but there shitty audio for the game ruins everything, everything sounds powerless

Well here's my theory, I don't actually think the gunplay is that good. Despite dual-wielding weapons and a ton of giblets I never felt the weapons had much heft or gave much feedback. The AI was poor and it was a lot simpler to just go all guns blazing, stealth being a bit of a missed opportunity. Not a bad game by any means, but doesn't deserve the huge fan following in my opinion.

I kinda agree with this and will add after some thought that the sounds the weapons make are so lame that after a while I wanted to play stealthy because it felt more satisfying, when a game makes me go stealth while its supose to have super fun gamelpay something is fucking wrong on the basic level, shotgun is just not fun to use IMO beacuse how weak it sounds, think of Crysis shotgun then think of this I mean in Crysis the shotgun sounds like a motherfucking 50 cal canon or some shit of that caliber, loud as all fuck same as the sniper, fuck all weapons of Crysis sounds insane and satisfying, but this game has the gore and lots of it but lacked teh acompanied sounds, my continous search of a game that satisfies me in all aspects didn't ended with this one as much as I wanted to.

Audio has a huge impact on how a gun feels and in turn the gunplay. The animation and visual feedback are excellent but the sound utter fails.

I feel like the run & gun approach would be a lot more appealing if there were two options added:

1) Loot/item pickup on contact: Right now, you have to look at the ground and click on everything. I felt like I spent a third of the game staring at the ground. If I'm running around an area and killing enemies, I need to keep my ammo stocked up, but I don't want to keep looking at the ground. Breaks the flow.

2) An 'always run' option: Right now, you have to hold down the analog stick to run, which is annoying to do all the time. And you certainly can't run and gun without the run.

The game doesn't give you any disadvantage for picking up loot or running (it's unlimited from what I understand), so I don't see why those options can't be present.

Up to chapter seven on second play through. This is definitely my favorite shooter campaign of the past few years. Do you get the Trophy for beating Uber difficulty if you use 999 mode for it? I know collectibles are not in it, but those will be all set prior to that. This game might be my second platinum trophy.

Finished the game yesterday on PC. Awesome game. I for one, enjoyed the cutscenes. I usually skip them or find them annoying...but they were pretty well done.

Played at high settings (and 1080/60fps most of time) and the game looks good, but it demands too much hardware for what it offers. Some textures are pretty bad.

The shooting was incredible good, yet some enemies were a bit annoying.

Prolly the best shooter i played in years.
