35 Developers Share Their Picks For Best Games Of The Generation

The few Valkyria Chronicles mentions make me happy. Also, glad to see someone like Greg Kasavin praising Demon's Souls! Respect.

Edit: instead of being typical, whiny GAF, why don't some of you say what you liked about some of these lists rather than enlightening us with what you consider overrated. If your favorite title was underrepresented, then tell us!

Only thing missing really is more mentions of Minecraft.

Naughty Dog really have a lot of fans among their peers it seems.

Bit of a sadlol for the only Halo mention being from a 343 employee (That I saw at any rate).

Kasavin is awesome!

Did he work on Braid?

Also cannot stop remembering this every time his name is mentioned:

You don't want us to discuss peoples' opinions in a thread that is dedicated to said opinions?

I suppose that is what this thread is about, but I never approve of making insulting comments in regards to someone else's preferences. I'd prefer a more "respectfully disagreeing" attitude.

These are some piss-poor lists. Explains the state of the industry, I guess.

Yeah. There are a handful of surprising choices in there (especially Deadly Creatures being on one of them) but the majority of it are the usual suspects. I guess what is really happening is that I'm just getting old and my taste simply isn't reflecting the current trends. Which is sad, but hey, it happens with everything!

Judging from the majority of these choices it's easy to understand why i don't care for most of the western AAA market.

For example six people voted for Skyrim while only one for Dark Souls (and another one for Demon's.)Also not even one mention of Dragon's Dogma.

Dean Evans
Ubisoft Creative Director

1. Grand Theft Auto IV
2. Fallout 3
3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
4. Alan Wake
5. Deadly Creatures

This is an unexpected and interesting choice. It was a fantastic game, I'm just surprised it's on anyone's top of the generation list.

I didn't know Greg Kasavin before. Now I want to know Greg Kasavin. As the only person to have mentioned Valkyria Chronicles he has won best list to me.

He use to be like the BEST reviewer at GameSpot. He knows whats up. He gave Clive Barker's Undying a 9.1. You can still check out his video reviews from 10+ years ago. They were always awesome.

I think if I picked and chose from everyone's list I would maybe find 5 games that would make it into my personal top 10.

Some really good games in these lists, though

Really disappointed to not see more Demon's Souls picks. That game changed multiplayer forever.

What the hell is this?

Randy Pitchford with Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch at number 2 on the list.

This guy is my new favorite developer. People who love that game have the purest of souls.

Of all the devs featured, my picks probably most align with Raphael Colantonio (Dishonored, Dark Messiah, Arx Fatalis):

1. Fallout: New Vegas
2. Skyrim
3. Bioshock
4. XCOM: Enemy Unknown
5. Deus Ex: HR

New Vegas was definitely my game of the gen.

Yeah Randy is pure as driven snow. Once he had finished Ni No Kuni he said to himself "man what a beautiful experience" and went onto finish Aliens: Colonial Marines.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
This just goes to show how awful most developers are and the games that came out last gen.

woa. that entitlement.

let's call people who strive to make things we love names; yup, creative people, who manage teams of hundreds who take years to imagine worlds from literally the ether of nothingness - which is such a rare, delightful gift - that make millions of people happy 'awful.' makes me so happy to go to work every day.

sorry, but sometimes ya gotta defend your friends

My list would be:

  1. Bioshock
  2. Portal (series)
  3. Fallout 3
  4. Bastion
  5. Smash Bros. Brawl
I'm glad to see that all of my personal picks are echoed by at least a couple of the devs.
