My PS4 is noisy, yours?

Honestly I think that if you aren't hearing the fans at all, that's cause for concern. If the fan isn't kicking in, then where is all the heat? Still inside the console surely?
If I go over to the console and put my head near it I'm sure I'd hear it, but under normal circumstances (around 10ft from the console) I only ever hear the disc spinning. I'm not the heaviest user (a couple of hours at a time as a rule) and I live in a fairly cool climate (UK).

Sounds like the Transistor thing is something that should be fixed.

I thought mine was bad, until I plugged in my 360 yesterday... holy jet engine batman. Don't think it's as bad at all now.

After playing 15 minutes of MLB: The Show mine sounds like a hoover, done the same with BF4 t00, it's louder than my PC that I put no quiet parts in at all and has a massive "loud" GPU in it.

I'm loathe to believe any really are quiet when playing games.
I think the differing reports are due to perception, sensitivity, background noise etc.
It's always the same, I've bought countless pieces of equipment described as "whisper quiet" which to me are bloody loud.

My quadruple is quiet on the dashboard but once the game is running the fans start blasting away.

At night, with no other noise going on (everyone else in the house in bed). I often have the headphones on, and when I take them off in game I still don't hear it.

If I get the chance to play tonight I'll try and pay special attention to it.

Both my PS4 and Xbone make far more noise than I'd like.

It's the burden of the early adopter. In a year or so I'll sell them both for revision 2 models with cooler running parts, better wifi, more hard drive space, etc...

I was under the impression that the onsie, with it's large fan and case did actually run quietly.

Didn't Sony say the PS4 is quieter than the PS3 slim?

Mine is defintely louder...I'd really like something official because it'd be nice to know if I have a potentially faulty unit, for example, maybe the thermal paste hasn't been applied very well hence the noise because the fans are working harder than they should need to...

I suppose we will all get to enjoy the better built PS4 Slim as those of us with noisy consoles will have burned out fans, and those of us who have whisper quiet ones will have caught fire and melted ;)

Now I think its fair to say that my Xbox One IS whisper quiet in comparison.

Mine is pretty quiet. Not as quiet as my Xbox One, which is completely silent, but still much quieter than my Xbox 360 or my PS3, which sounds like a weed eater.

well i finally got mine replaced by the shop i got it from and this one is still as noisy as the other. kept it horizontal since it arrived to see if that made a difference. nope. plus, now i have really squeaky triggers on the controller. i can't win lol. i'm gonna guess they're all noisey and i'm noticing it more because i'm practically sat on top of it.

Sorry for bumping, as I don't have the privilege to start my own thread right now.

I hadn't booted up my PS4 in quite some time until today. I have never had any noise issues before but god damn, my PS4 was loud as fuck out of nowhere today. Could this be because of the hot weather? The room temperature was probably around 26 degrees celsius when I was playing. Is that inclined to make a big difference in noise output?

Was very noisy in Killzone. It seems very random, it's very quite in BF4 and other games, only games that PS4 is really noisy in are Resogun and Killzone, also some games are getting noisy if you go back to main menu while game is running, even some arcade games.

Not sure what this all about. Console is in vertical with official stand, turning it horizontal makes zero difference, without a stand it was loud in almost every game. My AC is set to maintain 23 degrees temperature all the time, so it's not hot at all in the room.

Manufactured in August 2013.

Mine is a little noisey when playing infamous but not loud just can hear it, less than my phat xbox 360 but louder than my xbox one

Ridiculously loud.

Anything remotely to do with gaming and it goes mad. The exhaust gets really warm too.

Maybe the guys who call theirs quiet have it in/on a TV cabinet a good few feet away, but mine is out in the open on a pc desk right in front of me and it's terribly loud.

My xb1 next to it never makes a peep in comparison, regardless of what game/app is running. You have to strain to hear it in a silent room.

I can't really believe anyone who calls their ps4 silent. Maybe at idle, while horizontal and in an enclosure a good distance away, but nearby out in the open while playing, kz, infamous with the volume low for late gaming? Not a chance imo.

Mine is so noisy i'm even embarrassed to put on a game when I have friends over. I usually crank the surround system up really loud to drench the sound of it. But whenever there is a quiet moment in the game everybody goes like wtf dude, did you forget your vacuum cleaner on? :(

It's not so much the loudness but the distinct sound it makes. I can hear exactly when the fan is running through my PC with 4 fans running at ~600-700rpm. Kinda high pitched hum, completely different from the sound the bd makes. It definitely isn't silent and this hot weather isn't helping.

I was actually very surprised at how silent it is.
I have mine on the desk two feet in front of me next to the monitor and it's whisper quiet.

It does get hot though, the back exhausts are extremely critical for ventilation, it seems.

My PS3 slim and the PS3 fat I have here both eclipse it in terms of noise output.

When I played Transistor (digital), my PS4 made so much noise, at one point I stopped playing because I actually became concerned it was overheating or something. But there were quite a lot of the same complaints here on GAF so it was probably not harmful, just something that this specific game does.

Yesterday I was playing Watch Dogs (disc) while it was 28 degrees celcius in the room (really hot day) and I didn't even hear the PS4. I played for at least 4 hours.

So I'm guessing it's game related or something?

Louder than my PC on 100% fans, and that is saying something because I didn't build my PC to be quiet at all. Sounds like a slightly quieter vacuum cleaner.

Xbox One doesn't make very much sound at all compared to it.

You in the UK? I was playing the Destiny beta last night and due to it being mid 20's here and proper humid my PS4 too was getting quite loud. I think it's just the temp bud.

Mine is normally whisper quiet.

My PS3 phat is not even close to my PS4 in terms of noise output.

My tv is mounted so my X1 and Ps4 have plenty of breathing room on the stand below the tv. My ps4 only gets noisy when I play infamous for a few hours. Also, if your house is dusty as hell then your going to run into even more heating issues in the long run.

Horizontally laid here, and pretty much whisper quiet. Very rarely do I hear it whir up. Overall it's much quieter than my other consoles.

If you need to crank your sound system to drown out the fan noise, you need to see about getting your system serviced. It should not be that loud...

It's possible his fans have blocked up or aren't getting enough airflow or something. Numerous sites around the Web have done scientific recordings of db levels with the console and it's one of the quietest consoles around. As it should be really, the parts inside aren't exactly that exotic or power hungry.

It seems I'm one of those unlucky people with a loud PS4. On some posts around the net, there are people with inaudible PS4's and there are those with jet engines.

After 10 minutes of Don't Starve, my PS4 becomes loud enough for me to adjust the volume of my TV. It's not in a complete enclosure, it's in a shelf with hopefully sufficient space around, The air around is not hot so I could say the surrounding air flow is not shabby, just the air coming out of the vents is hottish.

Have I got a faulty PS4? Is there a secret menu I can check on the GPU temp or maybe control fan speed?

Enclosure amplifies the noise for one, and the lack of air movement reduces the cooling effect.

I had my PS4 in my entertainment center, open front with decent space around it. It was very loud and was audible on hotter days to people on coms when I was within 5 feet or so. I moved it on top of my sub woofer next to my TV and I never hear it now, and the daily temps have gone up significantly.

My PS3 is the loudest system I ever owned... once you put a demanding game in there it becomes a vacuum. The 360 is quieter than the PS3 but definitely louder than the current gen systems. PS4 isn't loud by my standards, but is definitely not as quiet as the XB1 ... it also runs hotter than the XB1.

Mine could probably drone out the sound of Brian Blessed shouting through a megaphone.

I've heard that the situation can be improved by placing the console horizontally but I don't really have the room, so just have to put a pair of headphones on, crank up the volume, and try to outdo the noise.

Netherlands mate. :)

Yeah, it was incredibly humid here too. 30+ degrees outside.

Mine is normally really quiet too.

There is no mythical whisper quiet PS4 when playing games like Killzone, Infamous, etc. Its the way the console was designed that the fans have to kick in when the tight enclosure starts heating up. I think people just have different tolerances when it comes to noise.

Vertical ps4,in my office, on a desk between a laptop and a monitor, playing infamous it Gets hella loud and for most games it spins up, definitely louder than my 360

Certainly was loud during Infamous. 747 airplane cabin loud. I really can't tell if its the disc drive or the fan. It's been awhile since I played my PS4 but I'll do a test to see if digital games are quieter than the disc based ones.

You could be right. I suppose some could just be particularly sensitive to sound. Here's DF's recorded measurements (horizontal).

At normal distances, the figures above are much less than has been recorded with some of the older consoles, and around the same level as the Xbox One, give or take 1db.
