A 30 FPS game is supposed to display each frame for two of a standard display's refresh cycles, which happen 60 times a second. Destiny will sometimes let a frame stay onscreen for an extra refresh, which causes the next frame to stay onscreen for only one.

It "maintains 30 FPS" in the sense that you still have the right number of unique frames per span of time, but yeah, the frame pacing makes it look less smooth than it would otherwise.

Yes, and this is what absolutely killed Infamous Second Son for me. A lot of people simply don't notice this, but it stuck out so bad for me that I wanted to stop playing.
 
Destiny's IQ is better than most console games, I'd say. Games like Infamous have spoiled us a bit though.

Agreed on both counts. Destiny looks great on my TV. I noticed a few jaggies here and there, but overall it looks quite clean to me......especially after coming from the jag-fest last-gen console games.

I see a game with an 'ok' AA solution. Terrible, to me, would mean there are jaggies everywhere and the IQ is shit.

Aliasing, screen tearing, texture shimmering, and stuttering are all things we shouldn't have to deal with anymore on current hardware, imho. We've already seen games released that have immaculately clean IQ, like Infamous: Second Son. Just slapping on a weak version of FXAA and calling it a day isn't good enough anymore.

It's pointless doing tech analysis on pre-release code. The worst was when they did an analysis of the GTA V PS4/X1/PC trailer though... like that was filmic aspect ratio for a start, and probably had little in common with what the game will actually look/run like.

Oh geez, their "tech analysis" on trailers is especially embarrassing... Makes it really hard to take them seriously when they do an actual tech analysis.

I'm having fun with it which is all that matters for me. Looks/plays great IMO.

Look, i'm one of the guys who argues that 60fps is not a necessity but wow this game is bad. I can see and feel the effects which actually affects my ability to play the game properly. They should fix this shit, its unacceptable.

No it's not pointless. It's interesting to know where we stand, and as Dark has pointed out this is a known issue for Bungie games and there is a high chance it will make it into the final code.

What I want to know is whether the frame pacing issues are simply a bug, or if Destiny is doing this to "buy time" when a frame is taking too long? I don't have a good enough understanding of the internals to make an educated guess.

I find it pretty odd that they can't hit 60fps at 1080p in this game, especially after seeing how well the previous gen version version is holding up. Visually the game isn't doing anything spectacular, it looks fine, but it's not blowing me away with any next-gen-ness other than sharpened textures and better shadows. I like the game a lot, and have the Limited Edition pre-ordered even, but from a world and gameplay mechanic standpoint, it still feels very much like a game tethered to consoles limited to 512MB of RAM.

I REALLY want to see them break down what the fuck is happening on the PS3 version. It's a shame this one isn't completely smoothed out given, uh, that, though hopefully it's ironed out in the retail game.

Texture detail in the beta is way better than the alpha. I'm hoping for some improved AA, AF, and motion blur in the final game but it still looks damn nice.

Known bug and one that may even get fixed mid Beta. No promises!
Great news. It's not a huge issue to me but it does make the game feel like it's running at less than 30 at times.

The judder doesn't bother me much because I know it's just a public Beta, but if it's present in the final build I'll be very disappointed.

They need to fix the aliasing too.

Infamous runs at higher than 30 framerate. Feels like something north of 40 most of the time, I'd say. Unless you're saying they botched the 30FPS lock option by introducing this frame pacing judder when you enable it?

I'm just checking... are we supposed to believe Bungie will have no problem improving the final release of Destiny for the XBOne to 1080p/30 (even though the beta has preemptively been disclaimed to be unable to pull that off) while simultaneously doubting they will be able to get the PS4 release version to 1080p/30 (even though the beta is unable to pull that off)?

I just want to make sure I know which way the mob is leaning so I don't stand out from the herd...

It's very useful that they do it, because it exposes a problem that maybe not even everyone at Bungie is aware of.

Frame pacing issue was there all along. Wasn't fixed when they capped at 30.

This isn't the same thing. What happens in Second Son is more due to genuine slow down (dips under 30 fps) and data streaming hitches. Even when limited to 30 fps it doesn't feel completely smooth. When unlocked it's just all over the place. It's not really frame ordering that's broken with SS.

OK, I mean, there is still judder due to some frames persisting longer than others, but the root cause and effect is not the same as Destiny.

Well, running at anything other than 30 or 60 is going to have judder of some kind. A locked 40 FPS means it's averaging 2 unique frames per 3 refreshes, which looks like this:

So on and so forth. The pattern is different but it still reduces the perceived smoothness.

The only way around it is something like G-sync where the refresh rate is continually variable and frames stay onscreen in specific numbers of milliseconds instead of refreshes that happen at regular internals.

I'm not an expert obviously, but it caused a similar stuttering feel. I would rather have frame dips than micro stuttering. Either way, Destiny feels much smoother to me.

Yeah, i noticed this in the alpha. Still there now. Moving the camera at full speed left and right feels a lot less than 30fps. The game still seems to be running roughly in that ballpark, so judder must be making it seem worse.

I'm just not seeing/feeling this judder at all.

It looks and plays buttery smooth.

I have no idea how you can think that this is 'buttery smooth'. While the fps issues aren't hugely problematic, it's clearly a long way from smooth.

The game is fun, but the whole thing just feels choppy as fuck, especially when turning the camera. I'm honestly surprised it's averaging 30, to me it feels like low to mid 20s much of the time.

I can definitely feel the skipping of frames, or whatever it is, every now and again, it's a little distracting at times. I hope they sort it out before launch

C'mon man, that's pure hyperbole. It's not terrible, at all.

It is quite bad. If the Order 1886 has 4xMSAA, then there is no excuse that a game of this visual quality doesn't have it either.

There should be some way for us white PS4 bundle dudes to upgrade our Destiny to the Digital Guardian Edition. I want those goodies :/

The game is a locked 30 fps, but has frame pacing issues. This is what I learned in this thread.

So the 1080p resolution is not the problem.

The game is fun, but the whole thing just feels choppy as fuck, especially when turning the camera. I'm honestly surprised it's averaging 30, to me it feels like low to mid 20s much of the time.

Depending on how you count your frames, the pacing issues could be considered equivalent to the game briefly dropping to "20 FPS" then rebounding to 60 before returning to normal. It feels different from normal dropped frames or a meandering framerate because it happens in discrete bursts.

Framing pacing issues are not affected by resolution. Dropping it from 1080p won't do anything. It has to do with how the engine is spitting out frames, right now they can be a bit uneven causing the judder.

Frame pacing issues are not a question of power. Resolution has nothing to do with it.

It has the potential to be smooth, as the frame pacing issues appear to be a technical bug rather than an actual performance problem.

Every issue with any PS4 game is not somehow related to the Xbox One.
