Heavily criticized games that you really enjoy

GAF, do you have any favorite games that you hear a lot of negativity about? I'm talking about stuff that people frequently describe as the worst games they've ever experienced, an affront to the medium, absolutely terrible, etc., that you have an affinity for.

I'm not asking this so we can thumb our noses at the haters or feel victimized for liking controversial titles, but to celebrate irrational preference and muse at how a game can "click" with one person on a profound level while being disgustingly bad to someone else.

For me, it's the Borderlands series. The criticism started slowly, but since 2009 people have built up a pretty strong consensus that they feel floaty, have terrible writing, simplistic AI, poorly balanced difficulty, monotonous battles, unsatisfying/uninteresting loot, and generally try too hard to be funny and edgy. Honestly, I agree with all of that. They're not winning any awards for white-knuckle gunplay, 99% of the items you loot are absolute crap, and the writing can be extremely cringeworthy. In spite of all that, there's something about the setting, art style, co-op experience, and the (very rare) thrill of finding a cool new gun that gives the series a special place in my heart.

A lot of people groaned when The Pre-Sequel was announced. I groaned along with them while silently acknowledging that I would buy it and play through the whole thing with my co-op buddies, just like I had for the previous two games and most of their DLC.

So yeah, another Orayn thread with a fairly simple premise. Share your controversial favorites! They don't need to have certain metacritic score, high or low, just a distinct and noticeable voice of dislike directed at them.

Call of Duty. I know that it's essentially the same thing every year, that it's gameplay is mindless and repetitive, and that it's single player mode usually is shit, but I enjoy every single one of them. No idea why.

Same thing with the Assassin's Creed series, actually.

And why would I want them?
This is real easy for me: Madden

I buy it every year and enjoy it more than the last one that came out before it every time.

I really enjoyed my 1st playthrough. Great representation of modern NY. Maybe it's because i'm a NYer but I really enjoyed it and don't get all the hate.

Amazing game though critically not very well received whatsoever. I consider it a cult classic though.

Borderlands received extremely positive reviews though.. and lots of folks (me included) love the series.

I really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite, was really surprised at how much hate that got. Before I played it I didn't read much about it and it got nominated for GOTY everywhere. And after I played it I read around and people seemed to really hate it.

I played the first Borderlands and I like it, bit too many fetch quests and went on a bit too long though. Haven't played 2 yet.

Recently I'd say Ryse. It wasn't anything revolutionary but it was a solid action game with a solid story and some very pretty graphics. Plus I played the arena mode a lot. IMO that game gets a lot more hate than it deserves.

I have played many hours of Devil May Cry 2 (less than one other person for sure) and I consider it a great game. It is one of the most fun and memorable games I've ever played. Every time I see a helicopter, I think to myself "its infested".

There's the obvious Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3, Bioshock Infinite and DmC answers.

Best example for me would be Assassin's Creed 3. A frustrating game but I quite enjoyed it. Revelations, on the other hand, is one of the worst games I have ever played.

Force Unleashed 1/2 would be right up there too.

DmC
Heavenly Sword
Enslaved
Prince of Persia 2008
Resident Evil 5

(i can see a trend here with Ninja Theory :p)

All of these too.

GAF is full of some seriously cynical bastards :)

The Dynasty Warriors series. Yes, I acknowledge that they are overtly repetitive with some truly brain-dead A.I., but there is just this weird appeal of leveling up your characters and weapons while you mow down hundreds of foes in seconds.

Too Human. Still one of my favorite games of last gen.

OP Borderlands is a multi million dollar seller. Most of the groaning is from people that want to play more Borderlands on their XB1's and PS4's. The fact that game is not coming to next gen consoles is one of the dumbest business moves by a gaming company in the past year.

I really enjoyed the later expansions of Halo (Halo: Reach and Halo: ODST). I actually had a lot of fun with the different story line and I thought that ODST reinvigorated my love for the online game play.

I think Skyward Sword is pretty fantastic, I'd put it in my top 2 Zelda games and my top 5 games of the last generation. I've seen a ton of hate for it on here and many other places.

Beyond Two Souls.. it trumps Heavy Rain only in terms of acting performance but it's still a solid game..

Final Fantasy 13 and 13-2.. 13-2 is the best in the 13 trilogy in my opinion. I enjoyed both games.. Lightning Returns however? big disappointment after the improvement from 13 to 13-2

Enslaved - i was hocked the moment i started playing.. awesome game.

Assassins Creed- It's my favorite series in gaming. I look forward to every release, every year with a ridiculous amount of excitement.

Don't generally get the sentiment that a game, inside of a series, should be changed significantly.

I had some expectations based on trailers and such, but the game delivered much and much more. Loved it.

I thought Too Human had some really interesting gameplay concepts and a narrative that I wish we'd gotten more of. Don't get me wrong, it had a lot of problems, but a lot of it worked surprisingly well.

Really enjoying Watch Dogs at the moment. Unique feel to its sandbox with gameplay options that speak far more to my tastes than the usual carnage. Plus, the online hacking and tailing modes are some of the most tense and unusual interactions I've ever had with other players.

It looks damn good too. Gaf went a bit nutso on this one, I think.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

Loved the gritty camera, loved the third-person, loved the characters and situation. Honestly the best co-op experience I've had last-gen. I still enjoyed playing single player too, but co-op was amazing. The multiplayer was great as well.

I want a threequel so bad!

Sure, the game is hella anime. Sure, the story and characters are abysmally bad. Sure, the in-combat resolution is SD. Still enjoyed the hell out of it. The combat isn't as good as 3, but it's more than good enough to be competent and Blindsides were a cool concept. Item Creation was the best it had ever been, and it was cool that you could make useful things and miscellaneous trinkets for your ship.

Yeah, this is why I said that their reception in the press didn't matter. Bioshock Infinite is another game with 90+ on Metacritic that still managed to be very polarizing and generate a vocal minority of people who have some major grievances about it.

And really, I don't think it's even a contradiction. BSI and Borderlands both happen to be cases where game reviewers gave scores that aligned with not-fully-explainable enjoyment, but I think a lot of the criticisms of those games are perfectly reasonable as well.

Indigo Prophecy, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls...this is basically David Cage: The Thread for me.

And Dragon Age 2. I didn't think it was nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be.

I think I remember the first Hitman got really bad reviews. Like 40-50. I LOVED that game. So ahead of its time, and certain aspects of it hasn't been surpassed yet imo. It had a lot of mechanical problems to though.

Skyward Sword. I loved it and is in my top 5 Zelda games now. The combat, dungeons, and story were all spectacular.

It certainly has some issues, but it's much better than what people make it out to be.

I also loved Bioshock Infinite and it's my favorite in the series. I don't get why it seems to have gathered so much hate around here. Yet again, it certainly has problems, but for me the good outweighs the bad.

I love every David Cage game I've played (so, basically all of them except for Omikron). Haters can eat shit.

Hope he makes games forever.

Bioshock Infinite. I enjoyed (most....) of the gameplay even though it was underbaked, but I really enjoyed the story. It wasn't as smart or deep as some people say it was, but I enjoyed it. I thought it put a good spin on things

Final Fantasy XIII/XIII-2/LR
Beyond Two Souls
GTAIV
RE5/6
Heavy Rain
Dragon Age 2 (even though I didn't like it at first, going back to it, I somehow dug into it and really enjoyed myself, surprised even me even though it's not as good as Origins, I really enjoyed it)

Quest 64.

It was blazing new ground and damn near the only RPG on the system, with a combat system never before seen. Yes, balance was wack as hell, but the elements and attacks were so cool, and it felt so different since you were really casting and aiming the spells in 3D space, not just causing a sprite to overlay the screen and cause damage.

Speaking personally, my only major problems with the game were the high encounter rate and the fact that water and earth are really the only proper choices of elements. Water has healing (extremely vital) and earth just plain does the most damage, so while there's some cool Wind abilities, there's little reason to level fire or wind. But it still had lots of great ideas, even if not executed so well. Didn't mind the story. I think people over-criticize RPGs that don't try to be Final Fantasy with massive stories.
