Heavily criticized games that you really enjoy

Not Spaceghost

Spaceghost
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 6
Star Wars The Old Republic
Armored Core franchise
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
GTA4

And uh probably a bunch I can't think of right now.

For me to actually hate a game is rare, I think I'd say I only genuinely hate or dislike about 10 games from last gen. I can find fun in just about anything.

I don't know if it counts but really enjoyed Watch Dogs despite some obvious problem it has in some of its mission design.

I though the mechanics (combat and hacking) were solid and main missions were mostly very fun and varied enough, even the hacking mini game wasn't so bad (although it could be tiring sometimes), all in all, it was a solid game that provided many of hours of fun, not a masterpiece but far from abysmal like some suggested.

Dungeon Keeper on mobile. Game has been raked over the coals but it seems to be inline with how long it takes to never spend a cent and play those type of games. I was able to get my 4th imp while spending nothing faster in this game than I could get a 4th builder in Clash of Clans. I guess it could fall off a cliff later on but whatever. I have played it a lot longer now than the people who gave the initial bad reaction. I have to think it was just some mobile+revered old franchise hate hate hate that caused that reaction since it is pretty much inline with the 100 other clones of this type of game that exist and imo this game is executed a lot nicer.

Borderlands 2 (and 1). BL2 sold 10 million copies and sits at 89 metacritic and I feel like 90% of GAF thinks it's one of the worst series of last gen.

Was surprised to see it get so much hate. It's got an art style and was basically a cult classic in the original. You'd think it was CoD the way people hate on it.

I absolutely love Darksiders 2. A lot of people say it was disappointing, even bad. But I think they're absolutely insane. It's one of my favorite games. I love pretty much everything about it.

Id say the PES-series on PlayStation3, it's the games me and mates have had the most fun playing for years now.

Mybig ones have been mentioned.
Too Human was surprisingly good. I picked it up because I love me some norse mythology and wanted to see what the game was about.

Dynasty Warriors. Yes it's often the same game (story) but it continues to facinate me and actually encouraged me to read Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Any time they introduce a new character I'm interested in how they'll play in game vs their portrayal in the book.

I can see where it comes from, the games have some issues that would completely ruin the experience if you were sensitive to them.

However, if you want something to zone out and play solo while watching TV, or blow through with a couple of friends over some beers, they're excellent. It's the sort of game where you need to be in a particular mindset to fully enjoy it.

Final Fantasy XIII; really liked that game. And Diablo 3. I never thought it was as bad as people claimed it to be. There were some stupid ideas and dumb things in patches but I never hated it.

And is Borderlands heavily criticized? I thought it was generally liked, except for some people. I like the series too if that counts.

Brutal Legend.
I had some expectations based on trailers and such, but the game delivered much and much more. Loved it.

Came to post this. Though I went in with fairly high expectations being a huge Tim Schafer and heavy metal fan. Was the first game I got a platinum trophy for.

I've gotta add this one to my list. I played that game 3 times, just recently platinumed it. I absolutely love it, even though I recognize its flaws. Hopefully Nordic Games gets some of the original talent on to finish out the series.

I'm replaying Metroid: Other M these days. I think the hate really has a reason to be, and is one of the worst games in the series, but at the same time I have fun running and blasting everything with Samus.

Starhawk

Loved the new ideas in here and though it was pretty well executed. Definitely should have dropped the "Hawk" name all together though as it wasnt a good successor to Warhawk.

Silent Hill 4: The Room. One of the most criticized Silent Hill games turns out to be one of my favorite games of all time. I just absolutely adore the atmosphere in this game. Going back to your apartment after traversing the nightmarish Other World always gave me a fantastic feel of comfort. I really like when games give you some sort of "home" to go back to. Dumb inventory system, invincible ghosts and escort quests be damned. I just love this game even with its huge faults. Also can't forget that fantastic Yamaoka score.

Two recent games that deserve a mention, Bulletstorm and Syndicate. Annoying design decisions aside, just all round great feeling and satisfying shooters that I really enjoy replaying every once in a while.

Same, I thought it was a big upgrade over the first. More Zelda-ish dungeons, better puzzles, faster combat, and somewhat tighter pacing even if it did have quite a few mini-dungeons and arenas where you had to acquire 3-4 MacGuffins to advance.

Maybe not heavily criticized, but the NES Remix games have received mediocre reviews. They're among my favorite games on the Wii U.

NES Remix 1: Critic: 71, User: 6.8, Me: 8.9
NES Remix 2: Critic: 73, User: 7.7, Me: 9.5

Deadly premonition
Starfox adventures
LOK Deception
Sonic adventure 1-2 (even though every time I play it, somehow it's worse then the last time)
Spy hunter: nowhere to run

RE5 is a terrible Resident Evil game. It's also one of the most fun coop games from last gen.

Mario Sunshine I've played to completion twice.

I've enjoyed every single Mario Party game.

I completed The Last Remnant on 360 with every achievement. I had to buy it for PC too.

Far Cry 2. I am cognisant of the criticisms and shortcomings but I still love it. Yup, the shitty AI and respawning checkpoints are annoying. It's a shame we never got to see Clint Hocking apply what he learned to another FC.

Far Cry 2 is incredible. What it lacks in polish, it makes up for in atmosphere and pure ambition. Would love to see another game follow directly in its footsteps instead of going toward a more generic (but still fun) open-world design like Far Cry 3.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

Loved the gritty camera, loved the third-person, loved the characters and situation. Honestly the best co-op experience I've had last-gen. I still enjoyed playing single player too, but co-op was amazing. The multiplayer was great as well.

I want a threequel so bad!

+1 for the threequel. The Co-op was amazingly fun. Multiplayer reminded me a lot of payday but better

I loved Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword I think they are both great games.

I really loved Bioshock Infinite as well. I thought it was brilliant. I was also surprised to see how much hate the games got online.

Side Note: I consider Sleeping Dogs & Driver San Francisco as the sleeper hits of last Gen. They were never hyped, and I really Enjoyed them.

Not saying it's a great game, but a metacritic of 57? really? I enjoyed it ok despite some of its frustrations.

Again, not saying it's a great game, but a metacritic of 63?

I really liked Resident Evil 6

RE6 is indeed a meety package, and I really enjoyed the co-op playthrough.

I also adore KZ:SF a lot, even though many GAFers hate it with passion

Just bought a Bone last week and played through Ryse on Centurion and Legendary difficulty. Quite challenging and satisfying game. May not worth $60, but still a solid title.

Resident Evil 6, more so than 5. it's a really good game.

Dark Souls II, it's every bit as good as the first and even improves upon a few things. people seemed primed to be bent out of shape after the #YOULIED fiasco and the fact that the game isn't rigidly structured the same way as the first one.

Zelda: Skyward Sword
Metroid: Other M
LA Noire
Tomb Raider 2013
FIFA shit. (it's like crack, I just can't drop them)

I really can't bring myself to hate Resident Evil 5. I acknowledge everything superior in design in RE4 but I still enjoy the hell the 5 if only because of co-op and replay value. (Even if the latter point also wasn't as good as 4.)

On the whole, I enjoyed the new Thief. It actually had a really satisfying stealth system and great level design in the side missions. Those aspects were just overshadowed by weak level design for the city and main missions, as well as the terrible narrative.

DmC - even if it wasn't a classic Devil May Cry, it was still a fun action game in its own right.
Prince of Persia 2008 - beautiful platformer with solid performances that encouraged exploration. A 'death screen' would've been counter to that. Did you fall? Well there ya go, you just failed. But the game decides to not waste your time when you're going to try the same thing again anyway but just dropping you back where you last were standing.
Bioshock Infinite - Great world, great performances, beautiful design, hectic and brutal combat, awesome story that could've closed off the Bioshock universe for good.
Tomb Raider - Uncharted in only some moments. But instead actually involved the player with some exploration, and was willing to be as brutal as it needed to to make the whole thing feel like kind of a horror game in a way. Gunplay felt great.
Skyward Sword - It has major pacing problems, but it's got a ton of cool stuff too. Beautiful design, charming characters, some solid dungeons and puzzles.
Syndicate - It was just fun. Had a good feel, some cool future guns, and some really fun co-op.
Enslaved - Not great combat, but it had a cool world, and some really cool moments.
Arkham Origins - I agree, it's a cover of the Rocksteady games. But it puts Batman back in the mysterious vigilante role, its art was less "try-hard" compared to the Rocksteady games, I like the Christmas setting, and even with the fallback on the Joker, it had a better story. Arkham City is like Hush - it's cool to see a ton of villains show up but then you realize how fucking nonsensical it is once you're done.
ME3 - Again, has its problems. But it has plenty of good too. Had more customization than ME2, combat was further refined, looked great, some solid endings to multiple arcs throughout the series.

Definitely FF13. Everything everyone ever said about it is true, but I had one hell of a good time with the battle system. All of its flaws were inoffensive enough that they didn't get in the way of my fun. Lightning is literally the worst, but Fang is so awesome that it all balances out.

Also Mass Effect 3. It's a three-year game that they had to finish in two, so most of the narrative aspects were necessarily rushed, but mechanically it's the best the series has ever been. And after the Extended Cut I've come to accept the ending. The Destroy ending, anyway. The other two are non-canon as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah-- while I really enjoyed FC3, I'm probably not going to remember much about it when FC6 is out in 5 years. My time with FC2 has stuck with me in spite of its flaws.
