Heavily criticized games that you really enjoy

Fuel. The open-world post-apocalyptic racing game.
I spent 80 hours two weeks straight on it. I really enjoyed. I enjoyed riding from point A to point B. The race were cool and exciting for the most part.

Too bad that now, because of GFWL, I won't be able to pick it up again in the future. Unless somebody, maybe a fan, out there, decide to patch it for Steam.

I can't believe how criticized Little Big Planet is on the internet. I know I'm not alone in my love for this franchise as it has sold over 10 million copies, but if you were to just read stuff on boards about it you would swear they were terrible games. Threads about the series are tiresome to read with all the floaty controls moaning that happens every single time.

Mario Kart Wii, in the multiplayer aspect of it. I like blue shells because it gives everyone a chance — in other games, finding out the top three drivers are so far ahead that you have no chance is boring.

Unreal Tournament 3 felt and controlled great imo. Lack of Assault mode was a bummer, but then Warfare and Vehicle CTF were entertaining enough.

Street Fighter x Tekken. It's a mess mechanic-wise, but the Tekken characters are just so fun.

Also, Crimson Tears.

I've spent more time with this pile of mediocrity than countless "better" games. Dunno why.

I'll be prolly put to the stake for this, but mine is Too Human...I played the game thrice...Wish they'd make a good proper sequel, it did have potential...

Make no mistake, it's not a great game. The shooting is very rudimentary, the enemies aren't much fun to fight, the graphics are bad, the art style is smack in the middle of the late 2000s brown-and-grey era, the story is throwaway nonsense that takes itself too seriously. The entire game is like four hours long, and about half of that is taken up by this one level where you protect a slowly-flying mothership that just goes on and on and on and fucking on.

However, the character controls are really fun. You can run around on the ground doing all the things you'd expect from a cover-based-shooter character, but a touch of the Y button puts you into hover mode (where you'll hover upright and can use your assault rifle), and hitting Y again will take you into full flight (which is super fast and limits your rocketpack-mounted cannons). Switching between all three modes in combat is awesome; I used to love turning off the rocketpack entirely and plummeting as an evasive manoeuvre. The best part was that you could double tap the Y button to go straight from running around to full flight, and the devs made it so you would always fly straight towards wherever your aiming reticle was pointed, so you could be standing in an enclosed room and fly out a doorway at the speed of sound.

The most fun parts of the game are when you're in large open areas and you can use your weapons and rocketpack as you see fit. I liked to carry a sniper rifle and snipe from mid-air for a while, do a few strafing runs with my cannons, make pinpoint landings in front of dudes to clobber them and then zoom away, it was great.

I really enjoyed Ninety Nine Nights on Xbox 360. Was one of my first games for the console and man, it was a great game. Frustrating at times, especially when you died and had to play the whole level again, but overly satisfying seeing the combo meter going higher and higher. Inphyy became one of my favorite videogame characters, she was so fun to play.

Thread of Resident Evil 6!

Deserving of many of its criticisms? Sure. Still some good fun to be had, though!

also Dragon Age 2, which is loathed here by most. I played it, enjoyed it, and finished it. Go figure.

Metroid: Other M
My only gripe against it is that it's too short. Loved everything else about it. I find the whole Varia Suit kinda dumb, but it didn't put me off the game.
Played it twice and find it better than Prime 2.
Prime 1 and 3 are still my favorites though.

-Dungeons and Dragon Daggerdale. Nothing special and a bit glitchy at times. Not great reviews but I like it a lot.

-Had a lot of fun with Warface, actually.

Fable 3. well over 200 hours with that game.

Yeah. I love that game, too.

Far Cry 2. I loved the game and although it is not without it's faults and bugs it does not deserve the hate it gets.

Assassins Creed Revelations was the best AC game from a story perspective.

Mass Effect 3 was the best action game of 2012.

Double Dragon Neon was probably the best game I've played because of PS+.

Score of 66% on Gamerankings, easily one of my favorite PS1 games. Though there may be a lot of critical hate on the game, it seems that the users here who have played it view it favorably... What say you, gaf?

I think I remember the first Hitman got really bad reviews. Like 40-50. I LOVED that game. So ahead of its time, and certain aspects of it hasn't been surpassed yet imo. It had a lot of mechanical problems to though.

Yup, I remember some of the horrible scores because of technical glitches and inconsistent AI, but I still loved it. Loved exploring the levels, which I don't think later games have been able to replicate the feel of.

GTA IV

I really enjoyed my 1st playthrough. Great representation of modern NY. Maybe it's because i'm a NYer but I really enjoyed it and don't get all the hate.

What hate? That game has like 98 in Metacritic!!

It's like if I said "hey I loved Ocarina of Time even though it is so heavily criticized.

Alpha Protocol received harsh reviews from most critics, but I suspect it was because most people tried to play it as a TPS with RPG elements. I personally loved it. One of my favourite RPGs of the last decade.

Dragon Age 2: I still enjoyed it despite all of its flaws.

I absolutely adored Castlevania Lords of Shadow 1 and even think it is the best CV game I've ever played and my personal GOTY 2010. They got what CV was all about, the music was spectacular, the graphics were crazy good for the time (and for my money the best graphics in any console at that time from a game that wasn't exclusive), and the atmosphere and environments were perfect. Yes it was linear but so were every other CV game before Symphony of the Night, and they were emulating the classic 'vanias of old in 3D as opposed to Metroidvanias.

I loved the Classicvanias and the Castleroids as much as the next fan but I still managed to embrace the new and fall in love with LoS. I wish it wasn't as divisive and hated by many as it is. It wasn't as divisive by critics as it was with old fans since it achieved an 85 in Metacritic with the general consensus that at least it was by far the best 3D Castlevania ever made.

LoS achieved what all previous CV games failed to do: grow the franchise and the fanbase. CV was becoming more and more niche-y with each title selling less than the one before and risked going into irrelevancy and fast. LoS1 still is THE best selling CV game of all time so that must mean something.

Unfortunately I can only speak about LoS1 here since I think both sequels, Mirror of Fate and LoS2 dissapointed in different ways and none are close to be as good as LoS1. They weren't bad but they should've been much better, especially LoS2. The developers bit more than they could chew when trying to go "open world", also the story made little sense and the ending completely let me down.

I can think of maybe one other person I personally know that played The Crystal Bearers, and it was ultimately deemed as forgettable.

I always found it to be a grand adventure on an intimate scale. It's been almost 5 years, but I remember mostly having a good time and being able to ignore the flaws in the gameplay. My only complaint at the time was that it felt too short. I should give it a replay and see how it holds up.

Though I consider Brotherhood to be the zenith of the AC series from a gameplay perspective, I completely agree with you about the story in Revelations. They successfully retconned Altair from being ANGRY SCOWLING GRUFF MAN, gave Ezio some great character development, and wrapped up the story arc of the Ezio trilogy beautifully. I especially loved the parallels in how
Altair and Ezio both spent their whole lives striving for causes that they couldn't be sure would succeed, but they had to trust that future assassins would fight for a better world as hard as they had.

Altair accepting that he had lived a long life and done all he could before retiring to his library to die was one of the few things in the series that I found legitimately moving.

Resident Evil 6 and Bravely Default are the most recent ones.

In both cases I absolutely get (most) of the criticism but as a mechanics first guy I just enjoy both immensely and think they're among the best in their respective genres despite some shortcomings in level design and pacing.

For me:

Uncharted 3 - it's awesome
MGS 4 - awesome 2
P Sword - so under-appreciated.
Heavy Rain - I've still to play a game that made me feel like my actions actually had consequence. No black and white/good or evil binary shit like ME.

I completely agree with this. Ezio and Altair's sagas were brilliantly ended. It still baffles me that this one received such a negative reception.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

Heavily criticized, but man I fucking love it.

Played at least 90 hours, then accidentally erased my main game by starting a new game at Galaxy...=_=

Dragon Age 2. Yes, I get the criticisms of the game, and agree with many of them. Still enjoyed it. The re-used environments and lacklustre visuals did not bother me nearly as much as they bothered The Internet, there were some fantastic characters (Varric, Aveline, the horrid Sister Petrine, The Arishok), interactions between party members were great fun, the friendship/rivalry thing was much better than the 'give presents for friendship' mechanic, and there some really good individual quests - the mission to set Aveline up with Donnic, the Saarebas quest, the bit in the Fade with the mage boy. The dlc was also really good, particularly Legacy.

Also ME3, LA Noire, Alpha Protocol and Remember Me.

Loved it with Six-axis controls even. I think Sony screwed up by not having the option for traditional controls from the start though. It really turned people off among other game issues at a time when gamers were ticked off at Sony and weren't giving them any passes.

I would love a sequel or remake but that will never happen.

Dragon age 2 for me

Yeah it has reused environments and the combat isn't as strategic but I still really like Kirkwall and the characters and appreciate the plot focuses on small interaction than "oh no we got to save the world". I think if it had been called dragon age spin off people wouldn't have been as harsh.

I actually much prefer it to origins which I find very slow paced and too generic.

Also uncharted 3, it suffers from being too much like 2 but i think if it had come out first people would see it in a lot more positive light

Searches for lords of shadow 2, and finds one match. I was wondering if anyone loved that mess of a game, but that's what this thread is all about, so it's OK

----------

I really liked Killzone Shadowfall, its art is gorgeous, and it's more of a personal story, not the bombastic ones of Killzone 2 or 3 (And I believe KSF is better than these 2 games)

I enjoyed Bound by Flames and Hunted: The Demon's Forge. I think Bound by Flame might be my favorite ps4 game so far.

This, exactly. I love LBP. Never understood the complaints about the controls.

Castlevania pre-SotN. Apparently Castlevania was shit before they turned it into a walk in the park?

Metroid Other M's gameplay. I like to pretend the story doesn't exist, but the gameplay is actually a lot of fun (although there are many ways it could be improved upon).
