TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

Why not make the shadows and the fps lock separate options?

Also, this isn't a big deal so I see no need for anyone to cancel their pre-order, but I still wonder why a PS3 game has trouble running 60FPS on a PS4...

My guess is that these high quality shadows were not in the PS3 version. Adding them probably dropped the framerate so they decided to lock it.

More and more we get closer to cutscene quality. The only things that's missing is the cinematic SSS which i hope they add.

30fps mode will be perfect for screenshots.

However, based upon our experience with the title today, we can say that if you are a fan of 60 FPS, you won’t be disappointed. This is a port that looks amazing and is highly optimized. I mean, this is a Naughty Dog game, after all.

This is also from the same article concerning 60 fps. Sounds promising.

Nice. Better shadows on 30fps lock is awesome. Half wish they would enable even more advanced graphical features in 30fps mode if possible.

Will be using 30fps mode for photo mode, 60fps for actual grounded playthrough.

Would be cool if Uncharted 4 had this too, with uber graphics at 30, or standard at 60. Best of both worlds.

Screenshot mode! Actually playing the game I will take a hit in shadow quality for the game to not look like dogshit in motion.

So is this the first console game to allow me to choose between 30 and 60fps with differentiated detail settings? Either way I support this practice and would love to see this in many more console games. I get that we won't get a huge range of detail sliders and post-processing options like some PC games, but having 30fps/60fps presets would be great for a TON of games.

well ok but they did flat out say they only included the 30fps option for preference only (some gaffer said 60fps made him feel uneasy).

for it to now emerge that 30fps brings some potentially noticeable improvement in shadows is pretty crummy

need pics first though
To me that's a whole different issue if they are lying or giving conflicting information. However I feel this is something more developers should be doing, and am happy regardless of the reasoning claimed for having different options for performance in the menu.

Hmm, I'll probably play 30fps in SP and 60fps in MP.

Solid 30fps with no dips is OK with me if shadows are enhanced. Will be better for photo-mode :)

As it should be. Lower framerate should allow for some kind of better visuals.

Joel/Ellie seem to have it actually, but not the rest of the characters.

My guess is that these high quality shadows were not in the PS3 version. Adding them probably dropped the framerate so they decided to lock it.
Shadows are already 2x the PS3 quality in the 60FPS mode, so obviously something more than that in 30FPS mode.

So if they're going to make a claim like this, then why wouldn't they use the PS4's ability to take screenshots to do a comparison?

Wait, I thought there were huge pushes for 1080p/60fps?

With the statement they just wrote, it seems like 30fps is indeed locked, while the 60fps is variable? Wonder how often it will dip

Well, duh.

You can always achieve prettier graphics with 30FPS versus 60FPS.

However this thread is useless without screenshots.

These two things have nothing to do with each other. 1080p not always being worth it is a separate issue from the framerate on PS4 versus Xbone.

When your article is about XBO framerate being better and is a lie...

Understandable, I suppose shadow quality is a good candidate for a graphics "slider" to turn up when you're adding an optional mode that gives you twice as much rendering time per frame.

Shadows are usually the first setting I switch to off (after AA) when I'm trying to score good frame rate in a game so it makes sense.

Yeah when my pc started getting noticeably behind the times I'd would just drop shadow quality and the fps would pop back up.

I like the idea of two viable options. Doesn't hurt anyone. Good on Naughty Dog!

so 60 fps is standard and you have to go to a menu for 30? if so, we know what the devs intended players to experience.

i dont see the issue here?
its great theyre doing this. if you're gonna have a lower framerate option, its nice to put some extra work in to make it turn up the graphics settings a bit since there's extra power to use

Yes, it's JUST a PS3 game. Just a PS3 game running at

Twice the framerate
Twice the pixel count
Four times the texture detail
Two times the shadow resolution
Cutscene models instead of game models for main characters
Higher resolution particle effects
No texture streaming
Higher draw distance
Higher LOD at longer distance
Probably some I'm forgetting

You realize "it was on PS3" does not make it possible to run on finitely higher quality on hardware a few years newer, right? Can't believe people still use "PS3 game" as an excuse for everything should be 4k 120FPS with 16xMSAA. PS3 isn't an Atari 2600.

the article implies this a day 1 patch. or can someone try it now?

if its radically different i'll play 30fps. i don't mind.
