Mario Kart 8 is beautiful.

It's a good looking Wii U game, but someone saying it's the best looking game available on consoles is just absurd.

The poor (or lack of, I've been using 16xAF for so long I can't tell the difference) texture filtering really hurts it. It's so amateur that I can't believe they looked at it and thought it was acceptable.

Screens don't do it justice - the jaggies ruin them.

I saw MK8 yesterday in Gamestop and the jaggies were clearly there even in motion.
I own a Wii U but i know it is what it is: an underpowered last gen console with some amazing games.
Gotta buy Pikmin 3 soon

It's a great game and it's wonderful to see what Nintendo can do in HD. But this is just more NintendoGAF self felating isn't it? I doesn't come off as genuine to me. Sorry, but that's how I feel.

Err...
Every company/console-specific group on GAF's gaming-side does this to some extent...like there is seriously no point in getting flustered or uppity about it.
:/

I got the game today and yeah jaggies are pretty bad. But otherwise it does look pretty good.

On an unrelated note, is anyone else bothered by the way the game handles split screen for 2 players? It's really annoying having such a narrow FOV.

pikmin 3 is a more beautiful wii u game imo

mk8 has that nice clean look but idk some colors look a bit washed out in some tracks and yes the lack of anti alaising is a bit disappointing. game still looks great.

I was impressed by the gifs, but when I actually played the game it didn't impress much.
Its a good looking game, but I'd say impressive only by last gen standards.
There are a lot of things that show you that the hardware is definitely lacking.

It's a trade-off between frame-rate and image quality. Nintendo opted for the former. Jaggies are unpleasant but I'd imagine frame-rate issues would have done much worse things to this game.

hmmm.. some of the textures in Pikmin 3 are really kinda meh, and it shows especially in the first person photo mode.

I think you're thinking of AA.

Jaggies suck, but in a fast paced game they're not very noticeable. Textures becoming a blurred mess when they're 2 inches in front of your player, otoh, is terribly distracting. I'd have rather seen them sacrifice some lighting or shadow quality before killing texture filtering.

I agree that it looks fucking amazing. The art is soo good.

"Change your settings to get rid of jaggies" is stupid though. This is not how it works. Not gonna destroy my textures.

I does look pretty. Great art direction putting everything together and great use of the hardware to keep everything running at 60fps while still looking gorgeous. And about the jaggies, it might be my set, but I can never notice them during gameplay. I'm only able to notice them if I specifically look for it during the replays and stuff, and still it is so minimal that it wouldn't bother me if I could see it while playing. Which is kind of weird, because I can see jaggies in other games (like my much, deeply beloved TW101, or even SM3DW sometimes), but not in MK8. Funny.

It looks great in motion, not only because of the graphics but mostly because of how well animated everything is and the amazing attention to detail. In screenshots.. All of that falls a bit flat. The way everything interacts with eachother is just beautiful. It's a game made to be played and optimised for gameplay, it's really impressive.

I don't know how anyone could go back to an older console Mariokart after this.

Yeah.
Kart was never a great looking series; MK8's leap in graphical quality is quite jarring in all honesty.
I never wanna go back to that cheap spin-off look the other games had. I'm expecting Kart 9/whatever to look just as good if not a little better than 8.

Edit: Also live recorded music is something that should be standard in MK from now on.

It's not all that impressive technically, but Nintendo has amazing art direction with this title... plus it's a marked contrast from all the boring emulations of realism.

16x AF or texture filtering is almost free performance wise.

It is a beautiful game, though to be honest when i am racing I barely notice. The replays re great for spotting the nice animations.

at last, for christ's sake
it's absolutely amazing looking. The lighting is out of this world, and the attention to detail mindblowing. I never expected Nintendo to go all out for MK, but they did

If it were it would be enabled in almost all console games. It may often be free on PC, when other factors are a bottleneck, but it's obviously not free in current console environments/games.

It's the best looking game so far IMO, the attention to detail is insane. The jaggies are hardly noticeable on my TV.

They are getting closer and closer to that Disney look.

Yeah.

Yeah, I never liked how DD, MKWii and MK7 looked. I was pleasantly surprised when they first revealed MK8, wasn't expecting anything like this at all. And the live recorded music is amazing. MK was always fun, but MK8 is so much more, wonder what got into the MK team lol.

It's the little details boooooy! The little details are the ones that make the biggest difference, just as everything else in life!

Yeah, it looks incredible for sure. I hope that the next 3D Mario game gets this kind of treatment in the graphics department. Mushroom Kingdom is better realized on these tracks than in any other Mario game. 3D World is a nice looking game, but the lighting alone in MK8 makes it look leagues better. Also, the jaggies are very minimal on my TV.

How in the world is a positive post about a nintendo game "self" fellating? Sorry, but this post comes off as so bitter. It's fellating maybe, not sure where the self part comes in. Seems like you just want to be an ass.

You mean like a 30 fps/720p game? I'm pretty sure Mario Kart is there.

One of the best looking games I've ever played. I still get a slight 'wow' feeling each time I play it (which is several times a week still).

I don't really notice the jaggies while playing, but could see the aliasing being quite apparent if playing on very large tv's and/or when sitting quite close to your TV.

I had forgot about the frame skip issue, probably because I don't play against CPU often... even before I didn't really notice it unless I was really looking for it though.
It's consistent 60 fps against other players and unless you play against CPU more often than against real players, it's still average 60 fps.

While the game itself is beautiful, I'm more impressed by details such as moustaches flowing in the wind and the famous angry faces.

Just imagine how a current gen Mario Kart will look like, when Nintendo finally releases a current gen machine.
Aww yeah all dat 60fps 720p goodness... if only!

I just got the game, and oh my fucking dog. This is the best-looking game I've ever played. It's like dreaming with my eyes open. My only complaint so far is that a few of the stages should have less bloom.

And to people complaining about jaggies: calibrate your display. I game on a monitor, and jaggies are way worse on the vast majority of PS3 games. It's barely noticeable in MK8.

From Mario Kart Wii to this...holy fucking shit. I can barely believe my eyes. Mario Kart isn't supposed to look this good.

You do realise that the Wii U doesn't support full range RGB right, so if you're using it with a monitor expecting full range RGB then your black levels are going to be screwed and things will look too grey, so before talking about calibrating your display etc I'd be sure to be using a display that's even displaying the image as intended first.

I do think MK8 is a bloody good looking game, and that's mostly art direction than actual graphical fidelity.

But I don't get the same awe that so many others seem to get for the game - I mean, it looks lovely and is always a pleasure to play. But there are jaggies and it can be a little rough every so often - fidelity wise, not visually - and that does kind of disappoint me.

Still, I don't care so much about that as long as the core game is great. Which it is.
