Today, we are announcing the Alpha release of the Dota 2 Workshop Tools. This is the first release of a new set of tools to create, play, and share custom maps and game modes for Dota 2. This is a developer focused release and currently has high system requirements which means not everyone will be able to run the tools. At the moment the tools require a 64-bit version of Windows and a Direct3D 11 compatible GPU. We are working on expanding the number of PC configurations (including 32-bit OSes like Windows XP) that will be able to run this but wanted to get the tools out there so developers could start working on their Custom Games. You can find more info here.

In other news, as you recall from The International, Techies made a surprise appearance during the All Star match, giving hopes of fun and mischief to Dota children all over the world – that is until Arteezy decided to ruin the dream. The Dota 2 Team is working on the Compendium Stretch Goals and putting the final touches on the explosive gang. We’re aiming for a release by the end of August.

A pretty good news. Who knows what crazy created stuff we will see over the next years. I am not that much into playing dota2 but i can see me wasting hundreds of hours with custom game mods :)

haha funny, would play this maybe.

and i get happy when i read something like this on the dota2 subreddit

I have worked with the World Editor, the Galaxy Editor and two other RTS editors. I can tell already: This is the most powerful tool I've seen in ANY RTS genre. The fact alone that we have standalone physics that can be modified like Havoc Physics is astonishing.
3rd Person RPG? No problem.
Dead man drifting racing game? Too easy.
100vs100 live MMO server? Certainly doable.

This sounds pretty strong.

Great news!

I've had fun with http://d2modd.in/ over the past few weeks, but having official support for mods is going to propel this even more. Can't wait to see what the community will come up with.

A community as large as Dota's will surely make something awesome! Not to mention, if this is tied to the workshop and you could somehow make money from your creations, holy crap. (is it?)

Selling your maps would be pretty crappy. What some people have thought of is making a ticket for your map that allows items drops as if you were playing a regular match. Another was a ticket to have match making for your game. Right now this looks exactly like csgos workshop for maps which you just subscribe and it downloads and updates it which is the easiest and IMO best way to do it.

Does anyone know if they're working on a custom maps browser to go along with this for searching lobbies?

A realistic thing is that people 1:1 port League of Legends into the DOTA 2 engine but with DOTA 2 art assets. It wouldn't kill League by far, but what would happen if there was a version of League with no grinding for anything in regions like China?

The biggest reason Starcraft 1 is still my favorite game of all time is because of custom games like these. I would play them endlessly. I love that I get to have that same experience in dota 2 in the future

Someone just make some other game with the DOTA 2 assets. Any game really. I love the look of the game and many of the characters, but just can't play it.

This might just give us a very early glimpse at Source 2. Valve completely redesigned Hammer (thank fucking god) - not sure if its thread worthy though.

We now have fancy stuff like a tile editor, or lighting preview - so no need to recompile to test out lights.

Also, a nice webm of how fast you're able to create maps https://fat.gfycat.com/YearlyDismalHuemul.webm

Also uses some new formats

vmap = vmf
vtex = vtf
vmat = vmt
vmdl = mdl
vpk = bsp
vpcf = pcf

The vpk thing is a bit weird, but in the vpk files are .vmap_c files which is probably the compiled map.

Not sure what the correct terminology is but can you manipulate the terrain on the fly without recompiling?

No, I think you are still forced to recompile for that - sadly. That's one of the big issues with Source - one they can't just patch out. So I guess we'll have to wait until Source 2 is out lol

Don't really care for DotA 2 proper but I will keep an eye if something cool emerges out of this.

You mean warcraft 4

Calling it a new genre will be born here and valve will ignore it

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if the custom game player numbers are larger than actual Dota 2 player numbers in a few years. A good, free platform for sc/war3 style custom games could be enormous if it's all handled well.

Someone should make Warcraft THREE.

Edit: What if Dota 2's mods spawn a game that is more popular than Dota 2 itself and one day Blizzard buys the name and controls the ip?

I'm certain Valve will be protecting and monetizing custom creations in some capacity from the outset, so I don't think something like that would happen.

I doubt they'd try to outright claim ownership of ideas executed as mods though. If anything I'm sure their strategy would be as it is already. If not licensing the engine, they've allowed mods to be sold on Steam. It'll probably start closer to how they monetize stuff in TF2/CSGO with allowing people to buy something that benefits the creator in exchange for special mm playlists or more cosmetic items.

Nice!

Wouldn't surprise me as well.

Crazy excited for this but still slightly nervous in how Valve implements everything. There aren't a lot of generic art assets to work with as far as buildings/props go since it's all contained in a single map so I hope Valve does little updates to add new models/props for modders to work with. I have a feeling that most of the modeling is going to be sourced by the community and it could get really jarring with clashing art styles. Regardless of my slight nervousness, I've been anticipating this ever since the Icefrog Q&A blog post on the dota2.com website in 2010 where it was hinted something like this was coming lol. I believe in the community though, they may be toxic as hell but they are really passionate. Can't wait to see all the new custom maps!

For the first time I'm gonna be public with this, current projects:
•FoF (Beta, fully playable).
•Element TD (Most towers done, playable state). Lots of custom models done. Sexy splash damage. I've also digged up the old author himself (Karawasa).
•Team Survival (Playable state, needs more polishing), Arteezy creep coming this week.
•Omni Party (Multiple minigames done, more to come). Though I really need to contact that guy that made the Gaben model and see if we can rename it to Gaben Party.
•Line Wars (Playable map, creep system and spells done, new hero models pending)
•Unannounced project (Classic revival)
And now that FFA is possible, we'll finally move on to Footmen Frenzy. Already have a bunch of concept art and lorework adjusted to the Dota 2 universe.
