USB and DLNA support coming soon to Xbox One - MKV Support

Is the functionality-begging allowed?

If it's not obvious trolling (difficult to troll about this) then i don't see why not.
A lot of asked features are available on similar equipment and most of them were even available on previous gen systems so it's more than legitimate to ask for at least the same functionalities.

It's like the next Mac OS or Windows was out without key functionalities. Seriously this shouldn't have been the case in the first place.

Hopefully this makes Sony pull their fingers out and start adding a bit more media functionality to ps4 (by some, I mean just give us something please). Great to see MKV there, but I have had devices that are supposed to play them before but not all MKV files worked. Maybe something to do with the audio? I have no idea.

If MS beats Sony to this (the company that ESTABLISHED the organization/protocol), I'll sell my PS4 that day and buy an XBO.

Just because you had better ideas from the start, doesn't mean you get to coast on your laurels Soony.

That's a pretty small reason to sell, considering a lot of people already own smart tv's and other devices that offer this functionality out of the box (not you it seems) . I understand the frustration though, I expected these capabilities as a given with these consoles, not waiting a year for basic functions.

Cool.

Will there be support for streaming movies from ordinary smb/Windows shares also?

I believe the answer is yes. I haven't been able to play with this at home yet, but I'm told if you've setup your Windows machine to share media, it can be played from the App.

Fuck, mkv support! Don't care much about tomb raider but fucking mkv support? That's rad! Only if I had the money to get an xbox one.

wow bought a "gaming" console and then selling it to buy another one just because it may not support a container for playing pirated movies/tv shows, cool.

I guess I'll keep my PS4 and no need to sell it to buy another one as my TV can already play MKV then, decisions, decisions...

Blocking anyone with a legitimate use of MKV because of concerns about piracy only punishes the former. Pirates adapt and work around all road blocks. Regular folks just get annoyed that their expensive box doesn't do something it is more than capable of for no good reason.

Hope Sony follows suit soon - I'd even be happy of they threw out a bone with some MP3 support.

Just out of curiosity, have you had your TV refuse to play certain MKV files? I have a Panasonic ST50 and whilst it plays nine out of ten MKV files, the odd one doesn't work.

MKV will follow-up to the Media Player launch this fall. It will ship well before the end of the year, but we wanted to call out for clarity it won't make launch. But don't worry, it will be there and I'm demoing it here in Cologne.

Can you comment on the following for Mkv:

- PGS subtitles
- hd audio support for truehd and dtsma
- native vc1, avc, and mpeg2 video support
- maybe even MVC 3d support

He's talking about DLNA, not MKV. Sony didn't make MKV.

Not really, the only problem I usually encounter is something to do with subtitles, sometimes they either delayed or just looking like codes on my LG TV.

Just being honest, the reason "most" want MKV support is to play pirated movies/tv shows on our consoles, I'm sure "some" want it for legitimate reasons no doubt, but I think it's much better to call spade a spade.

Not having a Xbone but MKV support is super awesome! Can only hope Sony will follow up with that as well, but I doubt it. Great update.

This is a great move by Microsoft. Everyone I know with a PS4 hates the fact that Sony omitted DLNA. My Sony phone even has DLNA out of the box. It's feature Sony omitted in order to drive people through their VIdeo unlimited and Music unlimited PS4 dashboard PAY APPS -- which they knew no one would use if consumers could already access their home collections.

I hated Sony for this. Microsoft did the same thing, for the same reasons. But now they see an opportunity. Props to Microsoft, not so much for enabling DLNA which should have been in from the start only for their greed, but for including .mkv in the supported file types.
This move alone is the first thing Microsoft has done to make me consider buying an X1.

Inb4 Sony announcing USB & DLNA support soon :p

Sadly they already said it would be a 2015 feature (DNLA, media player was said to come next winter). So fucking laughable.
But yeah, we can hope it will now come sooner*

*File formats supported: MP4 (h264, ACC only)

Nice one, MS. Didn't the 360 not even support to look at photos? Sounds like a nice new all-in-one media app.

Sure, what a nincompoop I am, I can't even find where I said Sony made MKV.

Someone talking about DLNA but not about MKV, in a thread that's talking a lot about MKV.

Of course, he maybe ONLY be talking about streaming MP3's using DLNA correct? So it's not odd right? to say that you are selling your "gaming" console and buying another one to stream MP3's. That made a lot of sense, mea culpa.
