Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I actually think the high sales is the reason this did happen; as many pointed out, this is a great counterpoint to UC series. It fills a hole in the MSFT line up of not having a platformer of this caliber.

Well it's an obvious deal from Microsoft's perspective.

It's Square Enix's side where they should have at least demanded a nine figure payment for this (which is almost assuredly more than they got).

Well, I most likely would've bought it on PS4, and I'm a one console guy so that's that.

Awesome for MS gamers though. The wording isn't just people reaching, every other exclusive game didn't have the date in it, but Tomb Raider is Exclusive in 2015. I could see it going either way really.

What a bummer. I really liked TR2013 and was looking forward to play the sequel on PS4. Wasn't it announced for all consoles? I guess I'll never play it now.

Ps4 ? What about the pc guys that loved this game that got shafted with this ? Stop
Dude
Also to the guys saying this is profitable and not desperation .. This game did not sell well like the publishers expected it to even on three platforms, they could've moneyhatted a better one that would have floored everything, also
I agree , didn't this game sold less on xbox ?
That was always BS, though. The game sold over 6 million copies!

To put this in perspective, the game shipped 6.5 million copies, which is more than the last update we got for Final Fantasy XIII (6.3 million copies).

They actually took the biggest franchise they have and made it exclusive to a system where they'd have to sell to over 50% of the userbase to even get in the realm of their previous success.

Yeah, it's baffling.

Maybe they think by it being exclusive, it'll get more attention? Maybe they want the same marketing push Ms gave to Titan fall?

The wording screams timed exclusivity.

Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox.

They did not say...

Dear Tomb Raider Community,

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider is exclusive on Xbox.

I'd laugh if it got delayed until the first month of 2016.

I have an Xbone and I refuse to buy this game because of this scummy bullshit.

Yep. I have both X1 and PS4 and i refuse to support this. I already don't like third party exclusives, but doing this after a series has been launched and blocking fans from a sequel is fucked. In the case of Bayonetta 2 it made sense, since the sequel wasn't going to be made due to money issues and Nintendo stepped in to publish it. But this is bullshit. MS and the Dev should be ashamed at how fuckin scummy this is.

Jim Sterling save us plz.

I seriously can't believe how dumb Square is. This is fucking ridiculous of them.

No Gamer that isn't blnded by the console war can think this is a good thing for gaming.

Well that's shitty and annoying. I plan to own an Xbone but I only wanted to buy exclusives on it. That won't change, the only thing that's changed is I have to wait to play it on the system I want it for.

fuck this shit, I'm not buying an Xbox One just to play this but I am quite upset it's not coming to at least PC.

There really is little doubt that Uncharted 4 factored in to this decision.

Also if FFXV or KH3 ever went exclusive to XB1 the shitstorm would be like nothing ever seen before.

would rage so hard and end up with permban

Never gonna happen.
Sony isnt that stupid as to let something that will be big to the Japanese public go exclusive to their competitor.

This definitely has to be a timed exclusive. Strange what the long term plans are for the Tomb Raider series. You would think MS is trying to buy Crystal or something. This can only hurt the franchise in the long run if the next game is planned to be a multiplat.

Look at it this way Sony fans, you still getting the best Tomb Raider game in Temple of Osiris.

Like I mentioned earlier, this is a blessing. Less attention on cinematic cover shooter #158425 and hopefully more on a more interesting game (ToO)

The amount of money that changed hands here must've been insane. Microsoft has to pay for the ~5mio lost sales on other platforms and all the damage it does to the IP (missing future sales etc).

Can some people with knowledge estimate what this cost Microsoft?

More than that right? If it is a true exclusive they would essentially have to buy out roughly 3-4 million copies and I am sure Square would like some sweetheart money on top of that. Gotta be closer to $200 million. Which is kind boggling. Like we are talking Avengers level movie budget to buy exclusivity of a game, and good look trying to figure out the ecomincs of how MS makes their money back. Lol

Well

1) some Playstation users will buy an X1 over this
2) Square does not get 60 USD per game but rather USD 20-25
3) They save all the costs from developing the PS4 version

MS must have made one hell of an offer otherwise I have no idea why SE would do that.

I don't like Tomb Raider, so thanks MS for killing TR. Still, this is a dumb move no matter how I look at it.

@VG247 on twitter saying its exclusive for the Holiday 2015
https://twitter.com/VG247/status/499177559318216704

Rise of the Tomb Raider is an Xbox exclusive for the holiday 2015 period.

Interesting.

This is such a big franchise, I just don't see it permanently attaching itself to Xbox One and lose out on sales on all the other platforms it usually comes on.

That said, is this the isometric game, or the Uncharted style game?

So instead of using resources on establishing in-house production to make stuff they spend them on keeping games away from competing platforms? Yeah, I'm not going to reward that with my time/cold hard cash. Not surprised Squeenix did this, but it seems really panicky from MS.

I guess there's the chance that MS funded the development and it wouldn't happen without them a la Bayonetta 2, but if they did, this sure was a weird way of announcing it.

"Sony cultivated themselves a fantastic first party studio over many, many years that has that successful Uncharted franchise. What do we do to compete?"

"Get Square-Enix on the phone. We will buy our own "Uncharted" series."

Them dollar bills. Guess Crystal Dynamics need the cash.

Anyway its a pretty dick move to buy off exclusivity for a game that was already announced to be a multiplat. Its the sort of thing that doesnt help MS PR one bit and probably wont make people buy an Xbox one.

Honestly? It's a horrible move for Square Enix, but you simply have no grounds to act like that based on the announcement. You might not enjoy the series or support the company; fine. We get that.

But this a business for selling, and the fact that you own one of the systems already is exactly why MS could afford and believe this was a good business decision.

I'm really struggling to see your logic here.

Yep. I have both X1 and PS4 and i refuse to support this. I already don't like third party exclusives, but doing this after a series has been launched and blocking fans from a sequel is fucked. It's a business. I cannot imagine that companies wanting to make money would act in any other way. It's not scummy; it's capitalism.

Well, that's why owning both the PS4 and Xbox One is worth it ! i wont miss on anything.

But it's a strange decision to make from Microsoft and Square Enix. Why Tomb Raider ? especially since the game sells better on Playstation platforms and has a long history of being a franchise associated with the Playstation brand.

Anyway, i personally don't care much. It's kinda a jab at loyal gamers though but again, this is how money talks.

BTW, this thread is awesome, in a "pop corn watch the show" way. The Playstation bias is just getting out of hand.

great for xbox, maybe it will move some consoles.

Thank god I dont play TR games, as I would be pissed to have to buy a xbox one. PS4 costs enough money IMO.
